Sam here. Everyone knows that dogs have pups and cats have kittens, but do you know what other animal babies are called? Here is the first of two lists mom and I found to test your knowledge:
- Armadillo
- Badger
- Camel
- Dragonfly
- Emu
- Ferret
- Gerbil
- Hedgehog
- Ibex
- Jackal
- Koala
- Llama
Answers:
- Pup/baby
- Cub/kit
- Calf
- Nymph
- Chick/hatchling
- Kit
- Pup
- Hoglet/Piglet/Pup
- Kid
- Pup
- Joey
- Cria
How well did you do? Interesting so many babies are identified as ‘pup,’ don’t you think? Don’t feel badly, mom and I totally bombed. I mean, whoever heard of a ‘cria‘ other than maybe a mama llama?? Ha, looks like I’m a poet! Be sure to check out the last part of alphabet babies next week.
Live, love, bark! <3
Okay, we’ll just back out of this post and pretend it never happened :o) Thanks for that Sam :o)
Don’t feel badly, we weren’t very good with our answers either, but it was fun and we learned a few things. 😉
Jolly interesting! The only one I got right was the koala…
Don’t feel badly, Susan…I this that was the only one we got right, too! 🙂
The only one I got right was the koala/joey. I just call them all “babies”, no matter the species, and swooned over the Joey and the baby hedgehog. 😍
That was pretty much our record, too. Are baby hedgehogs simply adorable, or what? ღ
Omg my next pet will be a hoglet – a few stuck spines is better than busted face any day! (sorry to all your readers for the inside joke)
LOL!! No one has ever heard of an ‘outside’ joke! Plus hoglets don’t need to worry about evil leashes! 😉
Vwery badly
Yeah, me too. 😉
We never studied that stuff when we went to PSU (Pet Smart University).
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
….OK Fine!….but did you know that if your feet smell and your nose runs….you’re built upside down!…..did you know that?….w
🙃 You didn’t do so hot either, I take it?
Wait a second…maybe I’m confused about where emus come from, but exactly what kind of egg do these “hatchlings” hatch from!? Or am I reading the answers wrong…
I know…hard to fathom. Emu babies are considered chicks or hatchlings (can you really call them babies when they’re 4 ft. tall by 3 months?!). A group of them is called a mob and rightly so. 😉 I’m guessing the conventional nomenclature describes them as chicks after several days given their size.
I got only 1! I should have gotten 2 because I knew the dragonfly one – it just slipped my mind. I think a lot are called “pup” because we all know that dogs are the best!!! 😉
Not to worry, we didn’t do that great either. The number of baby animals that are called pups did surprise me. 🙂
Cute pictures, and thanks for the interesting information.
Thanks! We like finding weirdo facts to share. 😉
We have to wonder why so many different names.
They all seem like ‘pups’ to me, ok, except for the dragonflies. 😉
I didn’t do very well, the pictures are all cute
Don’t feel badly, I was pretty awful myself but had fun learning some new factoids.
hedgehog.,, so cute! I want a llama. No more mowing and Cole feels an affinity with them.
Llamas make the strangest sounds to endear themselves even more. ღ
Aren’t they ALL just puppies after all….?
Love and licks,
Cupcake
Seems that way, Cupcake, well except for the dragonflies. We’re not sure about them. They dive-bomb me. ~Sam
we were totally wrong like always… but my momma loves the name Hoglet… I look like one after working in my backyard BOL
We were wrong on most of them too, but it was a hoot seeing the various names. Still don’t get the Cria! Maybe they just ‘cry’ too much 😉
I think I was a fledgling at one point. Chick, no way.
We figured you’d be more ‘eaglet’ than fledgling but in all ways, definitely soaring. 😉
