Flashback Friday

In an effort to get out of the Bah-Humbug funk that has continued to have a stranglehold on me, I went through some old photos and came across these gingerbread houses, some of which I made with one of my sisters a couple of years ago. I gave them to my bosses as gifts. While I may no longer have bosses to build houses for like these, I kind of wish I’d put one together this year, though no doubt, a certain Ninja Elf who shall remain nameless would try to nosh on them! Are they fun to put together? You bet-cha! Just be forewarned…they do take some assembly time (what was I thinking making a tile-roof of sliced almonds?!) and you WILL be sweeping up candy pieces over the next 6 weeks because those little balls bounce everywhere! But all in all, not a bad first effort. While I may not be much of an architect, who can resist cute gingerbread houses to amp up the decorations?

What creative things do you make to get into the ‘howliday’ spirit?

  1. Love your gingerbread houses! I’m too paranoid about the dogs – especially Ducky – grabbing the candy that would land on the floor to even attempt to make one. My “creative juices” only flow when I’m decorating; and right now Scrooge has a stranglehold on me, too.

  2. Those are simply amazing! I remember making little candy houses like this when I was a kid, and I always set out to make them look like yours. Mine ended up looking like some sort of crazy fun house that had been bombed, but I had so much fun making them. I should try it again.

  3. we have a metal arbor in front of our house that hubby enjoys decorating for the different seasons.
his dad goes all out with decorating for the grandkids.
to help beat the funk that comes with along this time of year i have vanilla scented candles that i light in the evening. the soft glow and the scent helps lift me up abit on long winter nights that fall way to early.
thanks so much for sharing how you are feeling. it’s like its not ok to be having some down days during this time of year. so you being so open about it helps us as well.

  4. Wow! These are gorgeous! Give me bowls of candy and you’ll get a black licorice cottage. The rest will be in my belly. Though if the icing is good … you’ll just have a black licorice hut 🙂

  5. That is so beautiful! Mom says she has never made one. I think this might be the year. I especially want a Gingerbread man cookie. XOXO – Bacon

  6. I’m not sure I’ve ever eaten genuine gingerbread anything before. My favorite holiday treats were the year-round staple chocolate chip cookies. In fact, the cookie bowl was where my butt was always parked during Christmas Eve at Grandma’s back in the day!

  7. Those are beautiful, Monika. I love the icicles hanging down. Alas, I have no creative talent, but I do my best on decorating, etc. Not this year, though. Going away is a good excuse…

  8. the houses are all beautiful to me.. I inherited my dad’s creative genes, as in not a single one. my mother was the creative one and she would love your houses

    1. That made me laugh out loud! You might surprise yourself, I know building one of these sure does. Oh and then Pinterest which will really provide some creative fuel! 😉 I’m a big believer in imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I think the copyright office calls that infringement though. LOL

  9. oh! They are incredible! I never made one but I made one on the computer yesterday. My friend sent me Jacquie Lawson’s advent card. It’s an interactive card, like her drawings come to life. In it are different activities each day like make a gingerbread house, design snowflakes, do a puzzle. I am in a funk too and look forward to each day now, so I can click on the ornament that takes me to beauty. LeeAnna

  10. Wowza. How cool are those houses! I’ve been in a wee bit of a funk too (after all, I live in I Alabama!). Alas, my sis has all the creative genes in the family but I do make my own tortellini during the holidays. The Poodle could care a wit about the fuss in the kitchen. He’s all about “where’s MY cheese?”

  11. How adorable! I am trying to also get my Christmas on…i did make a wreath..involving a pool noodle crazy amounts of baubles a hot glue gun and the hands of a ninja fending off 4 cats who wanted to swat the daylights out of them..looks good..would have been cheaper and taken less time to make one lol 🙂 loves Bev xx

    1. But making them gives the mind and heart a detour, something that’s especially important these days. I’d love to see a pic of your wreath. Made one last weekend as a gift and mostly pleased at the results. Although no cats swatting my efforts, just a Ninja evil elf eating everything she can get her canine’s wrapped around! Oh that dog!

  12. I love gingerbread houses, I did one once with my granny. we put it on the windowsill outside that it dried faster… and the alfred hitchcocks birds came and ruined everything :o)

Feel free to bark your thoughts...but no growling please.
