Mullet Monday

Hope you had a ‘wagnificent’ weekend. For the record and contrary to that meme, Patrick Swayze looked pretty darn good in a mullet.

He wore it well.

Finally Friday

Is it just me or has this been an extra long week? Winter made a brief appearance this week but it’s little cousin, spring arrived again. What a joy to see tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths and flowering trees shouting out…”I’m baaacckk.”! Such beautiful colors and a welcomed departure from dreary winter brown. Got any special plans for the weekend?

Almost Wordless Wednesday

I kind of like this sentiment though I can think of other sweet treats that I’d love even more. So what’s your idea of a terrific Wednesday?

Adventures at West Pines

You may remember that we were able to get a double shift at West Pines this month and mom thought you might want to know how we did on our last visit just before she went on vacation. Sam here. I am only to happy to share our adventures and happy to report I made some peeps pretty happy, if I do say so myself.

Visiting with staff and patients always make for good experiences and this trip was no exception. When we visit the various groups in their recovery process at West Pines I especially love going to the art room where everyone is gathered in a circle. There is always a large container of coloring markers in the center of the circle which I promptly knock over, without fail. In my defense, I MUST inspect everything to make sure (a) there are no hidden crumbs (these guys love to snack) and (b) make sure it’s all safe for the residents.  Mom thinks I’m just a klutz but it’s my routine game plan because it always embarrasses her and makes everyone else giggle. Win-win!

Reporting for Duty

And on this day’s visit, there were more than enough patients to visit. Usually when I sashay into a room, all the girls ooh-and-aww which automatically makes my tail wag. I just can’t help myself. Mom thinks I’m vain but I genuinely love people, especially when they say the magic word…”awwww.” So everyone wanted to pet me and kept asking me to come over to receive petting. Naturally I obliged. It’s a hard job, but somebody’s gotta do it, right? There was one girl I could tell really wanted me to swing by but she never said anything and kind of receded in the background. The others kept positioning themselves in front of me or next to me. One guy even got down on the floor so he could have me all to himself. Talk about being in hog heaven, yes I was…thank you very much.

I then came to my senses and realized someone was missing. The quiet girl. So after I visited with everyone else in the room, I trotted up to her and laid my head in her lap. Everyone couldn’t believe it. The woman who accompanies us to the various sites on campus squealed, “Oh my gosh, look at that! How adorable.” Pfft…it’s not like I’m not a pro, Miss Donna. I know what needs to be done and I could tell this girl needed me. I just had to take care of all the others. This quiet girl grinned from ear to ear and rubbed my ears just the way I like it. We both enjoyed it and I was able to bring a few moments of joy to someone who needed it. Mom was so proud of me at being able to recognize the need and Miss Donna bragged about it to other instructors. All in all it was a great day at West Pines and should be again later today when I go back. Paws crossed we have as good a time.

Mother Earth Monday

Yesterday was Earth Day and in my mind, one day a year shouldn’t be when we think when trying to save the environment. Rather we should be treating everyday as Earth Day to make a difference on our planet. Whether or not you believe in ‘climate change’ it seems hard to dispute ‘things are a-changing’ out there. Extreme droughts, increasingly more frequent severe storms, you can probably agree that weather patterns don’t seem normal these days. In order to protect our environment, I believe going organic is one way to help Mother Nature. Whenever possible, I try to eat organic and I certainly garden organically. With my two knuckleheads, I never can be sure what they’ll eat, so I want to make sure if they munch on anything in the garden, there aren’t chemicals that control weeds on it. In the past I have used common table vinegar to keep weeds at bay. While repeated applications are necessary a necessary shortcoming, I don’t have to worry about any canine munching on a weed with a side dish of chemicals on top.

Everyone likes a lush flower garden without weeds but I’m not going to put my dogs at risk. With a bee population in peril, it is even more important to treat Mother Nature kindly.

So when I was at my local health food store recently, I was thrilled to come across this recipe for weed control. I have used agricultural strength vinegar in the past and at around 20% acidity (compared with 3-5% for common table vinegar), know it’s extremely efficient when it comes to killing weeds though the lesser strength will also do the job. You may need to reapply a couple of times, especially if the weeds are well established.     I also discovered recently that if you have ants, you can sprinkle some cinnamon and they’ll take off for cheaper housing. Those industrial size bottles from Costco will come in handy beyond the occasional batch of cookies, especially after I found a bunch of squatters in the garage.

“Lady bug love” isn’t exclusively for the environment, in the long run it’s also for your fur-kids, even when you’ve been away on vacation without them. Happy Monday. May your week be particularly environmentally friendly.

Non-Stereotypical Pitstops

Before mom abandoned us went on vacation, one of our daily walkabouts included a decidedly non-stereotypical stop for girl dogs. Hi, it’s me, Sam. My sister always makes a pit stop in pretty much the same spot every day and nowhere near this spot. But on that day, look where she chose to ‘leave a message.’ In front of a hydrant! My favorite bulletin board. Hey Ninja…not. cool. one. bit. That’s my spot. Now that you’ve erased watered down my message, I’m going to have to find a new place. Can you say cooties?! Don’cha know…none of the boy dogs will bother replying to me over a sister’s text? Ugh…how embarrassing. How in the world will I ever be able to show my snout in the neighborhood now?

On the plus side, we managed to survive the past week without our mom. She is supposed to come home tomorrow afternoon. Yay…color us both happy-go-lucky pups. Here’s hoping you have a weekend full of tail wags and face licks.

Umm, a little privacy, please.

Did You Know?

My daughter with whom I have been visiting all week recently posted this graphic on Facebook and as a mom and as a caring human being, felt duty bound to share. Do you know whether the products you use are tested on animals? Are you surprised at some of the companies on this list from the folks at the Beagle Freedom Project as I was?

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday ~ April 18, 2018

Sam and Elsa here. We thought it was Friday this morning which would mean we only have another day without our mom but no….it’s ‘just’ Wednesday. {sniffle} We miss our mama. How’s your week been treating you?

Monday Moanings

Seems like Day 27…mom is still gone. Sigh. How DO people do Monday’s without their mom?

How was your weekend?

And she’s off…

Hi guys, it’s Elsa. I’ve been a busy girl this morning getting under foot while mom is running around putting things in a box with a handle and wheels. She keeps muttering to her self…”don’t forget to bring…” I’m not sure what’s going on but I think it’s something epic. My brother is rolling his eyes at me just as he steps in front of mom. He says we need to keep doing this because I won’t like what this means. I’m not sure if he’s on the level with me or trying to psyche me out. Brothers are kind of like that, always trying to get in your head and freak you out about something. I heard him say mom was leaving us but I don’t know what that means. I mean we are the bestest poodles in the world…how (but more importantly, WHY) is she leaving us?

Anyway, it remains to be seen what this all means but hopefully it’s nothing serious or permanent. Have a great weekend. We’ll catch you on the flip side!
