Mother Earth Monday

Yesterday was Earth Day and in my mind, one day a year shouldn’t be when we think when trying to save the environment. Rather we should be treating everyday as Earth Day to make a difference on our planet. Whether or not you believe in ‘climate change’ it seems hard to dispute ‘things are a-changing’ out there. Extreme droughts, increasingly more frequent severe storms, you can probably agree that weather patterns don’t seem normal these days. In order to protect our environment, I believe going organic is one way to help Mother Nature. Whenever possible, I try to eat organic and I certainly garden organically. With my two knuckleheads, I never can be sure what they’ll eat, so I want to make sure if they munch on anything in the garden, there aren’t chemicals that control weeds on it. In the past I have used common table vinegar to keep weeds at bay. While repeated applications are necessary a necessary shortcoming, I don’t have to worry about any canine munching on a weed with a side dish of chemicals on top.

Everyone likes a lush flower garden without weeds but I’m not going to put my dogs at risk. With a bee population in peril, it is even more important to treat Mother Nature kindly.

So when I was at my local health food store recently, I was thrilled to come across this recipe for weed control. I have used agricultural strength vinegar in the past and at around 20% acidity (compared with 3-5% for common table vinegar), know it’s extremely efficient when it comes to killing weeds though the lesser strength will also do the job. You may need to reapply a couple of times, especially if the weeds are well established.     I also discovered recently that if you have ants, you can sprinkle some cinnamon and they’ll take off for cheaper housing. Those industrial size bottles from Costco will come in handy beyond the occasional batch of cookies, especially after I found a bunch of squatters in the garage.

“Lady bug love” isn’t exclusively for the environment, in the long run it’s also for your fur-kids, even when you’ve been away on vacation without them. Happy Monday. May your week be particularly environmentally friendly.

Non-Stereotypical Pitstops

Before mom abandoned us went on vacation, one of our daily walkabouts included a decidedly non-stereotypical stop for girl dogs. Hi, it’s me, Sam. My sister always makes a pit stop in pretty much the same spot every day and nowhere near this spot. But on that day, look where she chose to ‘leave a message.’ In front of a hydrant! My favorite bulletin board. Hey Ninja…not. cool. one. bit. That’s my spot. Now that you’ve erased watered down my message, I’m going to have to find a new place. Can you say cooties?! Don’cha know…none of the boy dogs will bother replying to me over a sister’s text? Ugh…how embarrassing. How in the world will I ever be able to show my snout in the neighborhood now?

On the plus side, we managed to survive the past week without our mom. She is supposed to come home tomorrow afternoon. Yay…color us both happy-go-lucky pups. Here’s hoping you have a weekend full of tail wags and face licks.

Umm, a little privacy, please.

Did You Know?

My daughter with whom I have been visiting all week recently posted this graphic on Facebook and as a mom and as a caring human being, felt duty bound to share. Do you know whether the products you use are tested on animals? Are you surprised at some of the companies on this list from the folks at the Beagle Freedom Project as I was?

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday ~ April 18, 2018

Sam and Elsa here. We thought it was Friday this morning which would mean we only have another day without our mom but no….it’s ‘just’ Wednesday. {sniffle} We miss our mama. How’s your week been treating you?

Monday Moanings

Seems like Day 27…mom is still gone. Sigh. How DO people do Monday’s without their mom?

How was your weekend?

And she’s off…

Hi guys, it’s Elsa. I’ve been a busy girl this morning getting under foot while mom is running around putting things in a box with a handle and wheels. She keeps muttering to her self…”don’t forget to bring…” I’m not sure what’s going on but I think it’s something epic. My brother is rolling his eyes at me just as he steps in front of mom. He says we need to keep doing this because I won’t like what this means. I’m not sure if he’s on the level with me or trying to psyche me out. Brothers are kind of like that, always trying to get in your head and freak you out about something. I heard him say mom was leaving us but I don’t know what that means. I mean we are the bestest poodles in the world…how (but more importantly, WHY) is she leaving us?

Anyway, it remains to be seen what this all means but hopefully it’s nothing serious or permanent. Have a great weekend. We’ll catch you on the flip side!

Working Wednesday

Hi guys, I’m off to visit my favorite spot, West Pines today. Mom managed to get us an extra shift here before she leaves on vacation Friday [feel free to shame her for not taking me]. She mentioned something about ‘maybe’ not being able to post much during her 8 days away but she wasn’t sure. The plan was to prepare a few in advance but life got in the way and now she has to deal with a freezer that went out last night before she leaves. I just hope my bones are okay.

So if you don’t hear from us, you’ll know mom is being held hostage in a backyard teepee by the ‘grands.’ Make it a great Hump Day.
