Nature Friday ~ January 24, 2020

It’s Friday and that means we’re once again joining our friends, Rosy and her brothers from LLB in our Backyard for this week’s Nature Friday blog hop.

As you’ve heard me whinge about tell you countless times, scenes of nature around the Ranch in January are rather limited. Can you say brown, blech and blah? It’s been very dry even as it seems unseasonably warm for this time of year. Typically it’s bitter cold during the National Western Stock Show (which ends this weekend) but this year temperatures have been in the 40’s and 50’s F which is highly unusual. I’m not complaining mind you, but without some snow soon, things will be drier than a old dog bone.

You have to really search if you want to find signs of any color in January when the landscape tilts toward bleak.

Ornamental Grass

Lately I’ve been on the prowl for any little sprouts making their way up to the surface for life sustaining Rocky Mountain sunshine. I squealed out loud when I happened upon what looks like a very early bird tulip. This poor little guy has no idea what may be in store for him down the road.

Not far away in another garden, there was a beautiful Helleborus niger, more commonly known as Christmas Rose. After seeing gobs of brown, this was such a welcomed sight. It give me hope all is not lost during the blah-er scenes of winter in  the Mile High City’s January landscape.

If you haven’t visited the K9 shop lately, we invite you to check out some of the newest handcrafted items.

Teaser alert…there will a BIG announcement next week so enjoy the weekend and come back to find out what’s huge around the Ranch. Happy weekend!

    1. Oh gosh, that’s very exciting! Spring will probably arrive a whole lot sooner at your house than ours.

    1. No doubt snow will make more appearances but seeing a tulip sprout and that Hellebore gave me spring hopefulness. 🌷

    1. It’ll yo-yo back and forth until the middle of May. Today near 60F, tomorrow will be cold.

  1. We have Spring too…it’s 10°C (50F) and sunny today, but it was furreezing until yesterday (about 4°C below zero) We wished it would stay furrever, but Winter isn’t over yet and surpurrizes either…MOL..😸Pawkisses for a sunshiny day to all of you🐾😽💞

    1. It feels pretty good, doesn’t it? We may reach close to 60F today but only 40’sF tomorrow. Crazy weather!

  2. Oh my goodness!!!! flowers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for brightening my day. There are no signs of spring up here, not a chance since it snows into May here.

    1. We’ve had snow on Mother’s Day weekend the past 3 years and frankly I wouldn’t mind some now to cleanse things from all the dirt and brown.

  3. Singss of Spring here: 0.
Signss of Winter here: Plenty! Snow, mud, cloudy days, cold North wind, birdies on patio eatin seedss, efurry one bundelled up like Inuit peepell.

    1. There have been a few days of wind but no snow this month. We’re hoping for some more snow to get rid of the dusty conditions.

  4. What great finds! I’m so bored with snow pictures I didn’t even take any this week. I’m ready for spring, but I fear it’s still pretty far off for us! 🙂

  5. We’re a few weeks from yellow season where everything turns yellow, including the drivers from all over North America for spring training. Watch out on the roads and enjoy the scenery at home.

    1. Oh gosh, I can imagine coming from the coast. Brown is a real understatement in the Mile High in January. Thank goodness for bright blue skies, otherwise there’d be a lot more super depressed people.

  6. Wow… we never, and I mean NEVER ever get a sign of spring until April. March if we’re lucky but there again are when the worst snow storms happen…

    1. When your elevation is a Mile High, sunlight is a lot more intense. Winter will arrive again soon (and it has snowed Mother’s Day week the past 3 years). At least I hope so.

      1. There is that. We had another 6-8 dumping of snow the other day, but honestly, as far as quantities go this year? Pffft! Not worth mentioning…

        1. Since this region depends so much on snowfall as our precipitation, we better hope we get more. 🤞🏼

    1. It sure is. Hopefully soon though no snow in the immediate future. We should be in the upper 50’s this weekend. Break out the cargo shorts and puffy vests-the uniform of seasoned Coloradans. 😂

  7. Spring come early for you . . or is spring just messing with you?

Sorry to harsh your mellow, of COURSE it has come early! 😉

Here? Cold as all get out and I plan on flipping the middle finger at the thermostat all weekend.

    1. Trust me, Spring is just messing with us. The snowiest months are March and April. Happy weekend.

        1. There will more more, just not the stay on the ground forever type of storms. My personal favorites actually. Spring storms are the best!

          1. Well, in this neck of the woods it’s a day only Pennywise could love. On the bright side, if it were colder, there would be a foot of snow on the ground.
