Welcome to the 74th day on the calendar, otherwise known as the Ides of March. For a brief historical look, you can check out a previous post about the Ides of March. Clearly the Soothsayer’s abilities did not have much in the way of meteorological skills.
It felt like living in a snow globe this weekend. You may have heard the Front Range of Colorado was hit with a monster of a storm. I haven’t seen snow like this since 2003 though this one had the dubious distinction of being a full on blizzard. The airport, public buildings and schools are all closed while we dig ourselves out. The airport is set to open shortly after noon today. The governor called out the National Guard to help rescue stranded motorists and both north/south I-25 and east/west I-70 were shut down yesterday in both directions.
A good 2 feet of the wet stuff was dumped on the Ranch (official Weather Service tally was listed at 27.1 inches) and we were lucky enough to not have lost power so lots of baking ensued over the weekend. The satellite dish needed multiple clearing off sessions so the dogs and I could veg out in between potty breaks and a few sessions to try to keep the sidewalks from getting too bad. But after making one swipe, by the time I got back to the start, it was covered again.
The accumulation wasn’t all that bad (there have been other storms far worse) but the blizzard-like conditions made any traveling dangerous and treacherous. Even the foolhardy who were bored found cross-country skiing in the street too difficult judging by the fact they took off their skis and carried them home on their shoulders.
Even potty breaks were brief and quick. At one point Elsa showed her displeasure with the small area I shoveled so her breaks would be easier by jumping over into…a deep drift. When she managed to dig herself out, she was covered in snow and looked as though she’d been flocked. I had to laugh out loud as she ran passed me to the back door lickety-split. She apparently wasn’t as amused and immediately began to take out her embarrassment on the first toy she found. RIP little birdy.
The snow made for a fun weekend and like Elsa, I learned a valuable lesson about snow. Don’t stand directly under the satellite dish when clearing it off. Norman is decidedly not a fan of the white stuff. And my hero neighbor with the snowblower is plowing the sidewalks as I write. Bless that man!

My weekend was full of snow, too! We got 28” in the northern suburbs! My husband shoveled 3 time on Sunday so that the dogs had a place to go and so it wouldn’t be too rough on Monday. He knows that shoveling 2’ at once would be too much!
I’m with you, shoveling in increments is easier in the long run. But now the melt has begun on areas catching welcome sun…which now means muddy wet paws. Oh joy. 😊
Yes, the mess is near at hand. We had some flurries yesterday, but no accumulation. So glad we have easy to clean flooring!
We had flurries both yesterday and Tuesday. That easy to clean flooring should be called frequently cleaned floors in the melt season. LOL
I hear that! One year it was so bad that we bought an industrial-grade steam cleaner. It was terrific on all the muddy paw prints. I love that thing!
They are a godsend!
Our weekend was seventy and sunshine, just so Mother Nature could pull the rug out this week by bringing it back to the thirties and forties with rain. But at least we didn’t get that!

Never thought I’d be glad to be HERE … but this comes pretty close. I was pretty sure the story about Elsa in the drift would end with you having to go get her (Bear used to play that game in the pouring rain) – I’m glad she had the good sense to come in on her own. Bear’s only had one up close and personal experience with snow … I used to carry him to the mailbox to get the mail (yeah, I don’t really get why I did that – especially in snow – with our slippery stairs – but it’s besides the point). On the way back in, he slipped out of my grasp and climbed onto my back – then jumped off and landed in two feet of snow. I’ve never seen a cat move so fast! “Flocked” describes the look well.
Oh gosh, bet that was a real shocker for Bear! These spring snows are not uncommon here but the blizzard conditions seem uncharacteristic. Luckily a neighbor from around the corner came to my rescue (and allowed me to scrape a bigger area so Elsa doesn’t do snow bouncing in search of the perfect spot).
We were supposed to have snow today but thankfully the forecast has changed – might have some rain but no snow. You got “hammered” by it for sure……isn’t it GREAT you have a neighbor who helps everyone out? YAY FOR HIM!

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. Whew…yes, I’m very, very lucky to have such a generous and kind neighbor. While we’ve waved and passed one another for the past 10+ years, we’ve never gotten to chat which we did after he dug me out. What a nice human!

We’ve had loads of snow storms but I haven’t seen anything like that since the 2003 St. Patrick’s Day storm that shut things down for days. Good times in the 303. 😆
I moved there in 2005 so I missed that one. I remember a big Xmas storm not long after I got there. My husband was out of town and couldn’t get a flight home. He rented a car and drove from AZ. Some fun!
We’ve definitely had a few doozies. I moved to Capitol Hill in 1982 and ‘experienced’ the Christmas Eve blizzard of ’82. That was some storm that pretty much set the bar for future big storms for me. My MG Midget was buried for a several weeks!

Mom is very happy that the snow didn’t make it here, but we did just have an hour of tornado warnings with a touchdown only about three miles or so from us. A very odd day here.

He certainly was and then some. The snow wouldn’t have been so bad if the darn wind hadn’t blown like crazy. But it’s just another ‘springtime’ day in the Rockies.

How was MY weekend? In the low 70’s and sunny. Well, you asked! I chose to NOT live in those conditions when I moved south from PA. We used to get that much snow. And your neighbor man…I bet he enjoys using his snowblower, and being the neighborhood hero at the same time! So yes, bless him for his wonderful help.
I really don’t mind spring storms one bit. They come in, dump a bunch of stuff and leave/melt quickly. Plus we definitely needed the moisture. Glad you enjoyed the 70’s. Sounds like a great way to spend your weekend.
I see the doggie pawprints but no yellow snow. This concerns me because of Max’s Theorem. Max’s Theorem states if there is H20 on the outside, prepare for K9P on the inside. 😁
I tried to sanitize the images. Trust me, nobody wants to see photos of yellow snow besides Elsa is very picky about where she goes. Norman…not especially. 💛

No snow here, thank God! We had a 26″ drop last month and that will last me for a decade!

No kidding. He even dug out my my Mt. Everest driveway. We gave him some $$ for gas at least. He wouldn’t accept any for the snow blowing.

It’ll take a few days. Spring may arrive later this week with some piles of snow still. But it’s a beautiful day and I’m enjoying watching it melt.

Probably not. I-70 was closed in both directions and people were asked not to try until later today. Hope they make it home safely. It’s a beautiful day now and the great melt begins.

It sure was even though it arrived about 12 hours later than expected. Today is a gorgeous day with temps in the up 30’sF. It’ll be 60 on Saturday…just in time to welcome spring properly.

Glad to know you’re alive and well! I was thinking about you all weekend. We had waist-high snow here in PA one year. It took awhile to dig out!! I had to walk to a couple client’s houses (nearby) to take care of pets – it was a workout!.
Having lived in this state for years, I’m used to it but it’s been a while since that much came down. It’s so beautiful this morning.
Pretty, and challenging to remove. I remember many banks of snow being around for months after that huge snow we had.

Wow! That is a SERIOUS dumping! The one good thing about March snow is that it doesn’t usually stick around too much. Hopefully it helped lay a wet foundation, though.
Oh it was quite wet and very plentiful. It’ll take a couple days to dig out. That stuff is h-e-a-v-y to move!

Wow! All the ranch hands can stay close to home and stay warm and mostly dry. What a big storm! Out west the high country got plenty of snow too but I don’t think anything like Denver area. The Golden K at just 3100 foot elevation got a dusting of only a few inches that is already melting. Melting into mud as the red girls – Kloe and Koda – run amuck and revel on the frosty ground. Stay safe!
It’s so pretty this morning (unlike yesterday’s sideway blowing snow and strong wind chill temps). Digging out may take a while but we should warm up enough to help.
