Nature Friday ~ January 30, 2026

WilsonWelcome to the last Friday of January. As always, we’re joining our friends over at Adventures of the LLB Gang for their weekly nature blog hop. Be sure to check out what everyone else has shared.

Well goodness gracious…what the bloody hell is with the weather? Winter Storm Fern sounded like such a nice name and who goes on a rampage like she did when they’re named “Fern?” That beast showed her true colors and pounded most of the U.S. mercilessly.  If she didn’t dump a load of snow, she hammered people with sleet and/or ice. We were very sorry to hear about all the misery she caused and hope people are getting their power turned back on and settling in cozy, warm laps. Mum heard there’s another potential snowstorm coming to the east coast but we hope the weather forecasters are wrong and it’s not nearly as bad as they are saying it might be.

Wilson: It’s been cold here this week but nothing like it’s been around Blogville. When the sun is out though, it’s most welcoming and it melted nearly all our snow. There still are some frozen places along the creek. Mum kept me out of the walking lineup until midweek for which I was mostly grateful. Even if I was antsy and kind of annoying, I think she was trying to keep me safe and warm. It’s just boring being inside all day long.

The Mum: I know it’s hard for you when you have to be inside but if it’s too cold for me all bundled up, I know it’s too cold for you. I’m just trying to look out for ya, buddy.

Wilson: I appreciate it, Mum, even when I don’t like it. My potty breaks were a bit on the fast side because of the cold at the beginning of the week. I thought when you took me for a ride, things were going to look up and then I realized as soon as we pulled up, you were taking me to the groomer. What the dawg, Mum? I thought you were my friend. Harumph.

The Mum: Sorry, House Pony. You were getting a bit funky but now you’re all nice and floofy, you smell amazing and are nicely trimmed up. I didn’t let her steal all your furs. As we drove to the groomer’s shop, I couldn’t help but notice the wide open spaces. This stretch was pretty windy which likely sped up the melting and although it was 40F (4C), it felt much colder with the wind. Still it was such a pretty day with those sunny blue skies that I didn’t mind.

Wide open spaces

Wilson: Of course you didn’t, it wasn’t your furs being stolen.

The Mum: Oh puleez…she didn’t take that much off-you still have plenty of floof. It’s clean now and smells heavenly.

Wilson: {grumbling} It’s humiliating. Luckily Sydney is nice to me and everyone was very supportive.

The Mum: Oh for heaven’s sake, you are such a drama queen. Has anyone told you to ‘grow a pair.’

Wilson: {blinking and then rolling his eyes} I have a certain reputation to maintain. Sadly I am a Maligned Floof with a case of anxiety.

The Mum: {eyes rolling} Whatever. So what else do you have to share besides these overly ridiculous claims surrounding your latest grooming session?

Wilson: Well, since we missed several days of walks along the trail, we finally were able to take photos of one of the underpasses that has a pretty amazing mural late in the week. I kind of like this mural, the colors morph from one color to another. It rather looks like it’s a gigantic dragon in segments.

Mural
It looks like an eye watching me walk through the underpass.
Mural
Is that another eye watching me?

Mural

The Mum: It really is a statement piece. I wish I could show it in its entirety, not just in the segments to really show off how well each color blends into the next.

Wilson: The colors are pretty cool and it sure beats looking at plain old concrete walls or graffiti. I like it when cities incorporate interesting art into their infrastructure.

The Mum: Yes, you’re spot on, House Pony. It breaks up winter drab nicely.

Wilson: Well that’s it for me this week. Next week I will share a different kind of artwork by the legendary Camille Pissarro whose exhibit is being shown at the Denver Art Museum. Pissarro is known as the father of the Impressionist Movement and his landscapes are truly incredible.

The Mum: Sounds like a plan. We hope everyone stays warm and safe this weekend and that the weather doesn’t impact your ability to enjoy nature. We also hope that power is fully restored to all those folks who’ve been impacted by the ice storms. Be safe and have a great weekend.

Wilson: Yes, what Mum said. If you’re planning on something special this weekend, leave us a comment and tell us what you’re doing. Enjoy this last weekend in January. If you need some good news, just remember, there are 48 days until Spring officially arrives. With each passing day, I think we’ll all be giddy for when it arrives.

  1. Wilson’s fresh-from-the-groomer confidence is palpable and honestly relatable. The mural in the underpass is stunning, those kind of hidden gems make a winter walk so much more rewarding. The conversation between Wilson and The Mum about the cold is charming and very accurate to the back-and-forth of any creature-parent dynamic. Hope Winter Storm Fern stays far away and the beter weather keeps coming.

    1. Thank you for swinging by-we 💙 visitors. Sorry your comment was stuck in the spam folder and I just now saw it. WP has been a bit cranky lately but we appreciate you writing such a nice comment. Thanks! Weather continues to be unseasonably warm in our area-we may reach 70F today while the east coast is digging out from the latest dumping.

  2. Mee-yow it lookss frigid there two Wilson an Miss Monika. Wee gotted ‘tail end’ of so-called FERN!!! It was a Blizzard…Then Poe-lar Vortex came down an it’ss still heer an wee can not go outside. Even BellaSita can not breethe inn frigid air!
How many dayss til sum sorta Spring [leese??
***nose kissess*** BellaDharma an {{{huggiess}}} BellaSita Mum

    1. It is t nearly as bad as you guys in the eastern hemisphere have had it where nasty old Fern has been making mischief.

Right now it’s currently 56F but feels like 48F because it’s windy and cloudy. We will likely hit 60F by the end of the week.

        1. I probably would if it wasn’t windy and cloudy. 😬 But I’m sure it’ll get better. Eventually.

  3. Lulu: “Our Dada was trying to figure out why they called the storm ‘Fern’ too! ‘Fern’ sounds like she sends a nice warm gentle breeze, not Arctic temperatures and ice and snow! Then again he hasn’t really gotten used to the whole ‘Named storms that aren’t hurricanes’ anyway, so …”

    1. Whoever is in charge with the naming rights, sure botched that one. And you bring up a good point…why DO they name storms other than hurricanes. Sounds like somebody has too much time on their hands.

  4. I love the view of the Flatirons across the plains. When I think of home, that’s the view that pops up in my head.
    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks. The expanse of the prairie in front of the Flatirons is pretty impressive. Enjoy a great weekend!

    1. Thanks, Terry. Those murals are just fun to see every day. We never get tired of them because of all the vibrant colors. We’re with you even if our winter has been very mild, we are still ready for blooms! Have a terrific weekend.

    1. Even when it’s icy cold, if the sky is blue, it makes it much easier to accept. Glad you liked that underpass mural. It’s huge and goes the whole length on both sides. We love it. Wilson is a big floof but doesn’t understand that humans prefer good smelling dogs taking up lap space. 😉 Have a lovely weekend.

  5. So you smell great and your Mom can give you nice post-groom hugs without holding her nose! That’s a WIN Wilson! We are still under a LOT of snow and ice but are lucking out with this latest storm – it is in SOUTHERN Virginia but not coming up here where we are in NORTHERN Virginia! WOO HOO! We know we’ll have more Winter stuff but at least we get a little break. Tell your Mom her photos are beautiful – not so sure about the dragon under the bridge though….eeek! Stay warm and cozy and happy OK?????

    Hugs, Teddy (and Mom)

    1. Thanks, Teddy and Mom. Mum loves that ‘dragon’ in the underpass-so far, he’s been peaceful so we’re not afraid. The colors are just amazing! Glad to hear you’ll be getting a breaking from the white stuff. Now if the cold temps would just moderate, right? 😉 Have a super weerkend.
      Your fur-iend,
      Wilson 🐾

  6. What is up with Fern? Not cool Fern, not cool at all.

As for snow, none slated for this weekend in my neck of the woods but overnight lows are gonna go below zero. That’s just not something we’re used to. Cold yes, not THIS cold.

Mum definitely has your back Wilson. This level of cold is just dangerous, I can’t find anything humorous to say about it because welp, there is absolutely nothing humorous about it.

The groomer? No wonder you’re looking even more handsome than usual Wilson!

Those murals really do take your mind off the frigid temps. So warm and groovy. And now I can’t wait for next week’s art walk. We’ll be only forty-one days shy of spring then, but who’s counting?

Have a great weekend peeps and stay warm!

    1. Thanks, Marco. The countdown clock is definitely on! Glad to hear there’s no snow in the forecast and hope the temps aren’t too bad.I know I shouldn’t complain-this has been a super mild winter, but man, when that ‘Hawk’ blows in your face, it just chills you to the bone. No bueno. Have a super groovy weekend!

      1. It better be on! 😉

There are snow showers forecasted for this coming Friday which means we probably won’t get anything at all and I am good with that.

Temps in the thirties this week. Heatwave!

        Yeah it does, it’s painful!

        Thank you mama

        1. Let’s hope Mother Nature has moved on and isn’t toying with you with snow showers. We’re supposed to be 60F by Friday. 😱 Have a super week!

          1. I mean, she could be messing with us but I’m not about to call her on it.

            60!? My Godness . . . it’s gonna feel like Arizona!

Thank you mama, the same to y’all

  7. Love the photos, Monika. Those underpass art pieces are the best. As for the brooks, I could almost hear the ice melting. You would think our dogs would love a nice warm bath with scented shampoo. But, no. Fight it all the way. Wishing you and Wilson a lovely weekend.

    1. Thanks, John. I love walking through that underpass-I always manage to find some new element.

Yeah, it’s weird dogs don’t ‘appreciate’ smelling good. 😂

      Have a great weekend.

    1. I sure hope so. While we don’t mind the snow, the bitter cold temps aren’t as welcome. Wishing you and Chester a weekend full of cozy and warm.

  8. Can’t believe it’s the end of January (although I am glad to see it go!). It will be bitter cold here so keeping warm is the extent of our activities. Next week should be warmer or so they say.

    1. January isn’t our favorite month either and I can completely understand why you feel that way. Here’s to getting through this patch of bitter cold and we start moving toward warmer temps. Have a great weekend and stay cozy.

  9. Looks like it is the same temperature as in our Country, Wilson, but you have a little more ice, so far as we can see😸We’re glad your mommy keeps you safe from the cold, but we so know about getting bored inside😸Your pictures are amazing, and we can feel the cold only when we’re looking at them🐻‍❄️Stay warm dear furriends. Warm Pawkisses for a Happy Weekend to the both of you🐾😽💞

    1. Many thanks, You’re too kind. It’s normally pretty cold in January, but seemed worse this week-probably because of the wind chill. Brr, makes me shiver just thinking about it. We really need snow to fill up reservoirs but Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated this winter as we’re down nearly 40% so far. We hope you have a cozy and safe weekend and can get outside for a walk about the garden once or twice. 😉

    1. Well bummer times two! Why can’t nature cut you guys a break? So sorry. Stay safe and cozy warm this weekend.

    1. Blue skies help when the temps are cold. Hope you’ll see some soon. Have a great weekend.

    1. Why yes, I think you’re 100% right! I’m a firm believer in that old adage: “everyone thinks they have the best dog”. And they’re all correct. 😁

  10. We’ve had a lot of lake effect snow here, though not nearly as bad as those who live closer to the lake. We are at the edge where the snow bands come…we’ve had a lot of sub zero F nights, and dangerous wind chills, too. Right now the sun is out (Sun?? What’s that??) the temp is still cold, though at 12F at around 1pmEST. BRRR! ts IS nice to see the bright blue sky, though, kind of cheers one up.

Sorry your furs got stolen, Wilson, but they will grow back, ya know.

    Love that ‘dragonized’ mural!

    1. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the ‘dragon’ mural. Lake effect can be quite severe but a clear blue sky always brightens the spirit even if it’s still fairly cold. Stay warm this weekend and I hope the N’orester passes you. Have a cozy and fun weekend.

  11. Xena: We were lucky that all the really bad weather turned north before it hit us. It went up and visited our Auntie Jen and Uncle Bill in NW TN, just south of Nashville. One of those pictures in the tunnel looks like a black hole!
Lucy: This morning I finally got to go over to our neighbor’s with my Mom. You know, where my friend Sasha the boxer mix and her little sister Oliver live.

    1. So glad Winter Storm Fern missed you guys for the most part. I heard Nashville really got hammered.

I always think that black spot is an eye watching us. Have a great weekend and stay safe and warm, guys.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I love the colors and always find something new to savor whenever we go through it. It’s so creative. Have a wonderful weekend.

      1. Most of the trail underpass art I remember was of um…male private parts! I’m sure it kept the parks people busy.

  12. Love those murals, so fun! What the milkbone are moms thinking taking us for a ride and ending up at the groomer? It is the absolute meanest thing ever since we are so excited and then realize we have been tricked. Enjoy your warmer weather, we are warming up starting tomorrow. Hopefully we will stay below freezing for a few more weeks but I guess we will find out. Winter is our season, we don’t want it shortened.

    1. Thanks. Those murals are pretty amazing and each color morph is so seamless.

We really don’t mind winter but those bitter cold days were the pits. It wouldn’t have been so bad if we’d received some snow.

Wilson loved your expression about what the Milkbone moms are thinking about taking us for a ride and ending up at the groomers. Just not fair!

Have a terrific weekend and enjoy your favorite season.

  13. Highs are still in the teens here, with mornings in the single digits. The only good thing is that there hasn’t been a lot of wind, so it is tolerable for short walks. Short. We are expecting to get into the 20’s and maybe even low 30’s next week, briefly. Woo hoo!

    1. Ugh, those cold temps are brutal on pupster paws. Hope you don’t receive another dumping this weekend and can look forward to warmer temps soon! Have a great weekend.

    1. That’s exactly what he thought! I told him if he wanted fairness in life, best to look it up in the dictionary. 😉 Have a terrific weekend, Helen. Give the thugs a good rub from me.
