Welcome to this week’s episode of Nature Friday were we join our pals from Adventures of the LLB Gang. Don’t forget to check out what bits of Nature have been shared by others. Wilson here. Today’s post will strictly be only me-Mum is tired and is for history buffs as well as nature lovers as we celebrate our state’s 150th birthday. Colorado became the 38th state in August 1, 1876 having been a territory from 1861. At the western entrance to the capitol building, carved into the 15th step is the inscription “One Mile Above Sea Level” which explains, Denver’s Mile High City moniker. Later is was determined that marker was off due to inaccurate measuring techniques at the time. Now a brass medallion with a silhouette of the Rocky Mountains rests at the 13th step which is exactly at the one mile high mark. The capitol opened in 1894 and in 1908 the dome was covered with 200 ounces of 24-karat gold leaf to acknowledge the state’s gold rush days honoring all those who helped build and settle Colorado. It was reguilded in 1949, 1980, 1991 and 2013.
Designed by architect Elijah E. Myers in a neoclassical design, the capitol was built using Colorado white granite in the 1890’s opening in 1894 with copious amounts of rare Colorado Rose Onyx marble inside with the main entrance hall open to the top of the dome and as tall as an 18-story building. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of Denver’s Civic Center area across the street from city hall.

Colorado is well known for it’s purple mountain majesty. According to the Colorado Geological Survey, Colorado has 58 named summits over 14,000 feet. Here are a few of them that we’ve visited over the years. Probably the most famous of our 14’ers is Pikes Peak. You can read more about about how it inspired the writing of America the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates here.
Here is another photo showcasing Colorado nature is our state flower, the blue Columbine from the Nederland area.
Well that’s it for me this week. Sorry we’re a bit short on content today. It’s been a busy week. Hopefully you enjoyed slices of nature from around our state on its 150th birthday. Next time Mum will join us in sharing slices of nature. We hope you all have a terrific weekend and manage to get outside to experience nature in person. Oh, and for those interested in where we’re at in the summer countdown, there are 53 days left until autumn. Mum is jonesing to drag out her sweaters. I told her just to let me lay on top of her but she nixed that idea straight away saying I didn’t come with buttons. Not sure what she means by that but..talk about rude.
Live, love, bark! 🐾
Great Colorado pics! Happy 150th Colorado!
Thanks so much, Miss Dorothy. Appreciate your kind comment. We are very grateful to live in such an amazing state.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Lulu: “That’s a shiny dome all right! Our Dada says they used to have a bank with a gold dome back East where they used to live, but he isn’t sure if it was really gold leaf or just paint. He suspects paint …”
Lulu: “Dada was wrong, it’s real gold! Even though it’s not called the Gold Dome Bank anymore!”

Whoa-that’s wild! Not sure how politically correct it is for a bank to have a gold dome. Perhaps not the best PR.
He’s probably correct with his suspicions. I don’t recall a gold rush back east like it was out in the west.
Beautiful pictures of Colorado, Wilson and a Columbine from Nederland…Pawsome! Double Pawkisses for a Happy Sunday to you and your wonderful mommy too🐾😽😽💞
Thanks so much. We feel ever so blessed to live here, even if it’s hotter than blazes today. Lot’s of staying inside today!
Beautiful Colorado shots!
Thanks so much for the kind comment. We feel totally blessed even on ungodly hot days like this weekend. Can’t wait for autumn!
This post was just right in length and content. Thank you for teaching me more about Colorado and showcasing such beautiful highlights.
Thank YOU! Your kind message was so sweet. Hope you’re having a good weekend and it’s not too hot there.
The trail pictures are gorgeous. Makes me want to teleport myself there right now. Too bad I’m not Harry Potter or something of that sort.
Many thanks for the kind comment. Seeing them made us want to teleport ourselves as well. Mum says she needs to get back up in the hills again. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Happy Birthday Colorado! You live in a beautiful state. xo
Thank you! That’s very sweet of you to say. We think do too but then Mum and I are biased. 🤣 Have a terrific weekend.
Beautiful photos, I understand busy weeks, I hope you have a easy weekend.
Many thanks, Dan. Yeah it’s been a wild time lately. Hopefully by next week things will be back to normal. Have a nice and relaxing weekend.
Wilson, that was quite the interesting post, Colorado sounds beautiful. Happy Birthday Colorado!!!
Thank you, sir. We’re very excited about the 150th birthday and really enjoy all the beauty in our state. We hope you and the kitties have a marvelous weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Such beautiful images of your state!
Many thanks. We sure like it. We hope you have a great weekend.
Beautiful images of your glorious State sweet Wilson and happy birthday Colorado! 💖🎉 xxx
Thanks so much, Xenia. We’re very grateful to live in such a beautiful place. We hope you have a lovely weekend.
Happy Birthday to your beautiful state! I loved reading all about the capitol building, and seeing some of the grandness of the mountains, there.
What a delicate and beauteous image of that columbine. Our wild ones here are a shade of rusty red. They are pretty, too, but I just adore that blue one!
Enjoy your weekend and get all rested up.
Many thanks, Ingrid. We are so very lucky to live in this beautiful state. When I worked downtown, I loved walking through the capitol and reading about all how they built it, as well as the people who worked there. It’s such a beautiful place to visit and the marble and granite is simply exquisite.
Like you, I’m partial to the blue columbines-that one just was begging to be photographed!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Don’t work too hard in the garden.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Wilson, what a great job jumping in and running the show this time around. The Mum knew everything was in great hands…ummm, paws. Happy Birthday to Colorado! Many beautiful scenes on display here. Your drive times sound like ours…plenty of “windshield time” in getting around town. I am sure the population will continue to grow as it is a favored destination. One of these days, if a tour of the US becomes reality, there is no doubt we’d check out Colorado during our travels. I hope some of those historic buildings will still be there. Stay safe and hydrated this weekend, Wilson (and Mum).
Aww, thanks Bruce. It’s good to give the pawrent a break every now and then. Besides I was feeling a bit guilty since I’ve been pretty Velcro-y lately. At least that’s what she said.
Let us be the first to welcome you to our beautiful state. There’s so much to see and do-we’ve got everything but the ocean but there are some lovely lakes. And on the plus side humidity isn’t much of a problem compared to the eastern US. BOL. Have a lovely weekend and stay as cool as you can.
I have always loved visiting Colorado. It is a beautiful state with majestic views and lovely people.
Thank you for that observation, John. We share that sentiment. Mum couldn’t be happier in her new house and you know me, I’m happy when she’s happy so everything is just swell. And speaking of swell, we hope your weekend is just that. Enjoy and try to stay cool!
Like Tennessee (sorry, had to get that in), Colorado is a truly beautiful state. And I know that like me, you love the outdoors and nature, so it’s a great place to live. Enjoy your weekend and give Wilson a kiss from me (and Lucy says from her, too).
I’m glad you did, Mum has been to Tennessee and would agree. Nature and the outdoors is truly a balm on Mum’s heart. Please give your pupsters a big ear rub from Mum and have a super duper weekend.
Colorado is such a beautiful state! Congratulations on the 150!
Many thanks, Martha. We sure are enjoying it even more now that we’ve moved out of the city. I’m hoping Mum serves cake for the birthday celebration. 🐶 Have a swell weekend and try to stay cool.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
OMG, what beautiful photos! Happy 150th Birthday, Colorado!!!
Our outdoor time this weekend will depend A LOT on the weather. Like you and your Mum, the Z Kids and I hate the 3-H effect: Hazy, Hot, and Humid. Though Zoey seems better able to tolerate it than Zen and me. Yesterday was really nice – after over a week (more, probably), we had highs in the mid 80sF and humidity levels between 35 and 50%. If it stays that way, we might just spend more time outside this weekend. 🤞
Tell your Mum to take good care of herself. And I know you’ll be a good house pony. Love to you both from we three acorns.
Why thank you very much. We sure enjoy it and even more so since we moved. We are facing a scorcher of a weekend with a heat advisory. Ugh. It’s a clear blue sky today so unless some clouds develop, it’ll likely be a toasty one. Mum wouldn’t like those humidity levels-she’s used to very low teens. Come to think of it, I like it like that too. Have a wonderful weekend and give those Z-kids a good ear rub from Mum.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
❤️💚💜💙 Ear rubs from me to you Wilson and I’ll be sure to give the Z Kids theirs when they wake up from their post-breakfast naps.
Thanks, I always love receiving an ear rub. I could let Mum rub my ears for hours. Can you believe she gets tired of doing that after several minutes?!
Wilson, you found some beautiful pictures! Colorado is so beautiful.
Many thanks. We sure are enjoying our new life in Jefferson County. We are loving being closer to nature here. Have a wonderful weekend and don’t work too hard.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
The gateway to the Rockies! We lived in JeffCo for many years. Enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, Wilson and watch out for mountain lions and bears.
happy birthday CO… you look young and fresh for 150 years….. like the people who live there and who love you so much
Thanks Weim Brothers. Surely you’re not talking about my Mum…she’s getting kinda old but I love her just the same. She said the state has really changed in the past ten years and while the mountains have stayed the same, the people who moved here are diverse and from all over the country. We just wish there weren’t so many of them. 😉 Have a great weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
I can only imagine how exhilarating it would have been to walk through that area, unpeopled.
You know it. Mum liked it better when it was a “cow town” instead of hipsterville. We hope you enjoy a great weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Happy Birthday to one of the most beautiful states in the US. Great job Wilson!!
xoxo,
Rosy & Sunny
Thank you Rosy & Sunny. We sure like it here, especially in our new home. We’ll be roasting in a heat advisory. I don’t know about you guys but the monsoon has been rather disappointing. I think we’ve received about 18 drops this week. We hope you guys have a terrific weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Gorgeous building and the landscape and flower shots are beautiful.
Have a fantabulous weekend!
Thank you Miss Dale. Mum loves to wander around the capitol and look at all the historical things that are displayed. We both hope you have a terrific weekend. We’re waiting for yet another heat advisory. Oh joy.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Always my pleasure and I so understand your mum’s enjoyment of historical things.
Thank you for the wishes and oh damn… be careful all of you!
xoxo
Thanks-let’s here it for history! We’ll continue to hibernate right after our dawn walkies. I think Mum would rather set her hair on fire than be out and about after 6:30 AM.
I don’t blame her if it’s that awful and hot! Here, it is rather cloudy and unfortunately, the sunny day originally forecast for tomorrow is now a mix of sun and rain (My mother’s surprise 85th birthday BBQ at my sister’s.) Let us hope the 40 goes down to nothing!
Ooh…have a great surprise party for your mum❣️
Thank you! 💞
🧡
We always think it is amazing all the gorgeous buildings in the world were built well over 100 years ago with no modern machinery. Now we have all the tools and we build cheap crappy buildings. At least we have the old ones to look at. Happy Birthday to your state!
Thanks for the birthday wishes. Trust me, Denver in particular has gotten rid of some truly amazing buildings, in the name of ‘progress.’ It really is heartbreaking to discard those striking architectural designs in favor of plain boxes. We can only pray the ones that designated as historic will survive developer’s lust. Have a terrific weekend.
You are beautiful without buttons! We have been getting wonderful weather here. Today is another perfect day. Next week we will some rain most days. After our dreadful July, it’s very welcomed!
Thank you, Miss Kate. I tried to tell Mum that exact this. She wouldn’t have any of it. Sigh. Enjoy that perfect day and have a wonderful weekend. We’re bracing for another heat advisory this weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
So Denver is a city in Colorado, and Colorado is a state. I just looked on a map and see that you have loads of national parks and forests on your doorstep, and then I googled the distance between Denver and Salt Lake City, thinking 40 mins drive or so… 😀 😀 😀 Everything is so big there!! 😀
Thanks, Paul. Yes, there are definitely wide open spaces on this side of of the pond. For instance, it took over 800 miles and 12 hours for Mum to pick me up from the breeder’s house. It takes over 45 minutes to drive to the southern suburbs and they’re only about 25 miles away. I think Mum liked it better when there weren’t so many people.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
WOWZERS…….absolutely beautiful photos of a beautiful state…….”breathtaking” wouldn’t be too big of a word!
Hugs, Pam and Teddy
Thanks so much, Pam and Teddy. Mum really likes this state and while she’s lived in other places, always comes back here. We’ve got everything we need (except for an ocean and some rain 😬) but love the majesty of this state. Have a awesome weekend.
Your fur-iend,
Wilson 🐾
Definitely a beautiful state! 🤩 Have a pleasant weekend.
Thank you, Miss Eliza. Colorado has lots of beautiful vistas and according to Mum, a few too many people these days. Have a wonderful weekend.
