Thankful Thursday

Pi

Today’s formula seems perfect for Thankful Thursday. I don’t normally post on Thankful Thursday but when it coincides with Pi Day…well an exception needed to be made. When it comes to the pie versus cake conundrum, I’ll all on board with Team Pie. Homemade is best (even if it isn’t ‘pretty’), but I’m here to tell you there are some exceptionally tasty (and works of art) versions out there though none of mine would fall in that category.

The ubiquitous Cherry Pie
Homemade Key Lime Pie-it took awhile for my knuckles to heal after zesting
Pumpkin Pie (before Elsa took a tongue width slurp out of it)

As you can see, I’m not an aesthetic pie maker, but they are tasty even if they look rather homely. Good thing stomachs don’t care, right?

On the other hand, a 4th generation family business located nearby makes the best pies that are quite good looking as well as tasty, which definitely makes me thankful on Thursdays (or any other day frankly).

Irish Cream Pie

A good friend and I meet there for coffee and pie whenever she’s in town and I can honestly say they make the best pie crust I’ve ever eaten. They also make savory pies as well. And just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, they released an Irish Cream pie which looks every bit as pretty as it is tasty.

So where do you stand on this hot topic? Pie or cake?

Live, love, bark! 🐾

It connects lovers — of pets, authors, books — and of my still-unreleased novels, “Flamenco + the Sitting Cat” and “Tango + the Sitting Cat.” The stories are my love letters to all who fear they're too odd, too damaged, too old, too whatever to find happiness. 2. Who doesn’t love pie, I mean seriously?

Even people who don’t “like pie” can find a pie to like if they really try. Me? I don’t have to try . . . I’m already there.

I know just what you mean. While I’ve never seen a cake that didn’t get eaten…the pie seems to be most everyone in my family’s top spot. Same at work. Even veggie pizza pie gets eaten before the meat pies!! Damnit 🤣

I love the look of the homemade and “not perfect” pies, to be honest. And, much as I love pie, piecrust does not love me so… I will indulge but rarely! However, if the pie is graham crust, all bets are off!

I just heard what goes into shoofly pie yesterday and think it might be a bit too sweet for me, and too much like pecan pie which I cannot stomach. Give me an ordinary cherry pie and I’m a happy camper. 🥧💙🥧

  6. Doug Thomas – Alliance, NE – I retired from nearly 36 years in a factory that produces hydraulic and industrial hoses. That is the short of it. The most interesting thing I've done is serve in the US Army as a motion picture photographer. I was stationed in then-West Germany in Kaiserslautern, Kleber Kaserne, in the 69th Signal Company (Photo). I was sent all over western Europe filming military exercises and other less interesting things. This enabled me to become a "bier kenner", someone knowledgeable about beer. Haw! I was much younger then, and could handle the wear and tear. The most interesting thing that happened to me happened in 1980, the first day of the new year: I spotted a rara avis in my backyard. A phainopepla, a member of the silky flycatcher family! It stayed around for two months, long enough for me to photograph it through a garage window not more than 2m from a birdbath to which it came each day. The photos, sent to the state ornithological organization and their rare bird report committee, established me as the first and only person to have seen this particular bird in my state. Records for my state go back to Lewis and Clarke's western expedition, so that gives you the context and perspective through which other birders view my record. You should too! It was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. It lead to a decade of uninterrupted bliss, tracking down birds in the field with other people of a feather. The worst thing that happened to me is called Wegener's granulomatosis. Oh dear! This is where it becomes difficult! WG is a form of vasculitis that you have for life once it develops. It has no known cause, though scientists work as I write to try to determine why it occurs. My story is long and I am tired: More details later! It is a fatal disease without proper care. With proper care, people still can die! One last detail: a weggie (pronounced "wegg-ee"), is a person with Wegener's granulomatosis. It is an Australian construction, to the best of my knowledge, and suits me better than being known in perpetuity as a "WG patient". In 2016, a Wegener's flare mostly wiped out what kidney function I still had, and I went through a two month process of hospitalization and rehabilitation before I could return home to my two cats, Andy and Dougy. My neighbors across the lane took care of them while i was gone, with a childhood friend who substituted for my neighbors when they had to be out of town. The major change brought about by the flare: I now am on dialysis three times a week. Fortunately for me, my local general hospital has a very modern, well staffed dialysis unit. With a nurse-to-patient ratio of nearly one-one, it is the best of five dialysis sites I've been in. The recliners are even heated! Since these units are typically kept ice berg cold, you can see I feel like I am in heaven! (Well, not yet, but you get the idea!)
    Doug Thomas says:

Homemade pies are best! Because I am less than competent to make a pretty pie, I make a “rustic” one, deliberately making the top crust free form. The added ridges and folds actually make a more delicious crust for those who like the crust as much as the filling, though I’ve never had complaints. I use a deeper pie dish anyway, so the filling to crust ratio is prime the way I make pie. I’ll take pie over cake any day, especially a loaded pecan or nicely spiced three or four apple varieties apple pie! Gooseberry is another one I like if i picked the gooseberries – a canned gooseberries are too mushy and over-sweetened. Rhubarb from the garden, too, makes the best pie, especially using my great grandmother’s recipe for pie and crust.!

We think so too but alas homemade isn’t always possible. Still, give me a slice of deep dish pie and I’m a happy camper. Yum…gooseberries…that sounds delish! Yeah, as you can tell, my pies are pretty ‘rustic.’ My mom made the most beautiful pie crusts but alas that trait didn’t get passed on to me. 😋

I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. Seems like there might be more pie varieties than cake!!

  21. I have been meaning to say how lovely your header is, and finally got round to it.
Your pies look great! The favourite in this house is treacle tart…shortcrust pastry, a layer of fresh breadcrumbs, then golden syrup with a squeeze of lemon poured over the crumbs.
I’ll make cakes if forced, but much prefer pies.
