Thankful Thursday

Pi

Today’s formula seems perfect for Thankful Thursday. I don’t normally post on Thankful Thursday but when it coincides with Pi Day…well an exception needed to be made. When it comes to the pie versus cake conundrum, I’ll all on board with Team Pie. Homemade is best (even if it isn’t ‘pretty’), but I’m here to tell you there are some exceptionally tasty (and works of art) versions out there though none of mine would fall in that category.

Cherry Pie

Pumpkin Pie

As you can see, I’m not an aesthetic pie maker, but they are tasty even if they look rather homely. Good thing stomachs don’t care, right?

On the other hand, a 4th generation family business located nearby makes the best pies that are quite good looking as well as tasty, which definitely makes me thankful on Thursdays (or any other day frankly).

Mini Irish Cream Pie
Irish Cream Pie

A good friend and I meet there for coffee and pie whenever she’s in town and I can honestly say they make the best pie crust I’ve ever eaten. They also make savory pies as well. And just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, they released an Irish Cream pie which looks every bit as pretty as it is tasty.

So where do you stand on this hot topic? Pie or cake?

Thankful Thursday

  1. Who doesn’t love pie, I mean seriously?

Even people who don’t “like pie” can find a pie to like if they really try. Me? I don’t have to try . . . I’m already there.

    1. I know just what you mean. While I’ve never seen a cake that didn’t get eaten…the pie seems to be most everyone in my family’s top spot. Same at work. Even veggie pizza pie gets eaten before the meat pies!! Damnit 🤣

  2. I love the look of the homemade and “not perfect” pies, to be honest. And, much as I love pie, piecrust does not love me so… I will indulge but rarely! However, if the pie is graham crust, all bets are off!

    1. I don’t ever recall a ‘not perfect looking’ crust…once it’s down the hatch! 😋 🥧 😋

  3. Yesterday I talked to Mary about her delicious home-made key lime pie. Hopefully she’ll make one soon.
That Irish cream pie looks delicious, too.
    😋🤤

    1. Thank you-that’s very kind. Hahahaha…that’s great advice, I’m gonna have to remember that one!

  4. Lulu: “Mmm, pie! I don’t think our Dada has made a pie crust from scratch, but he makes lots of pies that go into a shell. His favorites are blueberry crumble pie and especially shoo-fly pie! Shoo-fly pie seems to be a bit much for some folks, though …”

    1. I just heard what goes into shoofly pie yesterday and think it might be a bit too sweet for me, and too much like pecan pie which I cannot stomach. Give me an ordinary cherry pie and I’m a happy camper. 🥧💙🥧

  5. Homemade pies are best! Because I am less than competent to make a pretty pie, I make a “rustic” one, deliberately making the top crust free form. The added ridges and folds actually make a more delicious crust for those who like the crust as much as the filling, though I’ve never had complaints. I use a deeper pie dish anyway, so the filling to crust ratio is prime the way I make pie. I’ll take pie over cake any day, especially a loaded pecan or nicely spiced three or four apple varieties apple pie! Gooseberry is another one I like if i picked the gooseberries – a canned gooseberries are too mushy and over-sweetened. Rhubarb from the garden, too, makes the best pie, especially using my great grandmother’s recipe for pie and crust.!

    1. We think so too but alas homemade isn’t always possible. Still, give me a slice of deep dish pie and I’m a happy camper. Yum…gooseberries…that sounds delish! Yeah, as you can tell, my pies are pretty ‘rustic.’ My mom made the most beautiful pie crusts but alas that trait didn’t get passed on to me. 😋

        1. My mom was an amazing cook and made amazing pies. I can only hope to be half as good as she was in the kitchen.

  6. I’m definitely a pie person…..my pies are NEVER “perfect” in the looks department but the taste is “THE THING” anyway right? Your pies look fab to me…..I’d happily take a fork to any of them!

    Hugs, Pam

    1. My tummy doesn’t care a whit about appearances to my homemade pies-it just needs to taste great. Just looking at them again made my mouth water. I may actually need to make a pie this weekend! 😋

  7. Oh my goodness, I could eat every one of those delicious looking pies. I can’t have most yummy things due to allergies, but I can dream! Thanks for joining Angel Brian’s Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    1. Many thanks. Today is a great day to be thankful, especially when pi(e) is involved. Dream big and enjoy without the calories or reactions. 💙 🥧 💙

    1. Thanks, Thomas. Pi(e) any day seems good, on March 14 or any day frankly. 😋

    1. You got that right! They both have their place. As in “get in my belly!” 🤣

  8. Oooh you know how to make someone hungry! LOL! Pies are my favorite over cakes. You know that Cara makes her speciality Shoo-fly pies. 🙂 The Irish Cream pie looks the most delicious to me. Eat an extra piece for me to celebrate Pi day 🙂

        1. Remind me again what Shoofly pie tastes like? Normally I don’t like noshing on flies.

          1. Haha! No flies!!
The main ingredient is molasses and tasty crumbs on top. I can email you the recipe if you would like. 🙂
The pie is so tasty you have to shoo the flies away from it.

            1. Oh my gosh! Sounds like a sugar coma after eating just a slice. 🤣 I recently bought a gallon of molasses from Costco since I make my own brown sugar. No more of that hard, pale stuff in my baking!

                  1. Give it a try!
You know how Tippy jokes around all the time. He often gave me a hard time about flies being in the pie. Well, a few years ago, I sent a recipe for Shoofly Pie to his wife, and he had to eat humble pie because he really liked it! 😂😂😂

    1. Oooh, yes, cherries makes all the difference. Soooo tasty, especially when you add almond extract to the cherries. 😉

  9. I like pie year-round, but I do think my cake love is usually reserved just for Fall and Winter. I’m not sure what that says, but I’m quite sure I love them both🥧! These pictures are making me hungry!!!

    1. Maybe because fruit isn’t readily in winter? Truthfully, who cares what it says…pie (AND cake) are awesome.

  10. Team cake here but I’d never turn down home made pie! I make my own pie crust too and it’s really good. People actually eat the entire crust! Happy pi!

    1. Happy Pi Day, Kate. Sadly my crust is not as great as I’d like but hopefully with some practice… Then again, no one has said they wouldn’t enjoy a slice of pie I made. LOL

        1. Great tasting is all that matters to me. It’s not like I’m some culinary influencer. 🤣

            1. 😂 😂 😂 Rustic would be a compliment on the appearance of my pies but I like that. LOL

  11. It’s pretty much 50/50 for me, LOL!! If the icing on the cake is yummy, then cake please, but I do love all the types of pies you showed us, and also lemon pie, and tart apple pie.
Seems like there might be more pie varieties than cake!!

    1. Good icing is the bomb. Dangerous but oh-so tasty. I make a Dutch Apple pie that is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. God created perfection in Granny Smith apples. LOL

  12. All the pies look tasty! Pretty is beside the point …
I was going to bake a pie today, but instead, am shoveling 17 ” of slush.

    1. Thanks, Amy. Yeah, it’s something out there. Keeping it manageable every couple of hours so I don’t throw my back out. I think you deserve a piece after 17 inches! Stay safe.

    1. Thanks and Happy Pi Day to you! Coffee and pie is the best especially with a friend. If it’s early we’ll go for savory, if later in the day, it’s fruit…some days I eat one and bring one another home for later. I LOVE pie. 🥧 🥧 🥧

  13. OH MY LAND! What gorgeous pies YOU made! Cherry and pumpkin are my fave. Maybe I can squeeze thru the internet and appear at the table?

    1. You’d always be welcome. The pies I make aren’t pretty at all, but they sure make my tummy happy.

  14. The pies look amazing and just looking at them makes me wish I could just reach into the screen and take one, I hope you all have a good weekend,

    1. Thank you! They taste amazing, even if they aren’t very pretty. Happy Pi Day.

  15. I have been meaning to say how lovely your header is, and finally got round to it.
Your pies look great! The favourite in this house is treacle tart…shortcrust pastry, a layer of fresh breadcrumbs, then golden syrup with a squeeze of lemon poured over the crumbs.
I’ll make cakes if forced, but much prefer pies.

    1. Thanks for noticing the seasonal header, Helen. And thanks for the kind thoughts on my pies. They ain’t pretty but they do taste yummy. I should try to make a treacle tart-they look so yummy! At some point I hope to make a tasty crust, so probably ought to practice more. 😉

  16. I refuse to choose. Both are more than worthy! I am not however, a huge fan of too much icing, so as long as there isn’t more icing than cake, I love cake and pie equally. Wouldn’t turn either down!

    1. Hedging your bets seems like a terrific strategy. Goodness knows I’ve eaten more than a few cakes in my life too! 😋

    1. Thanks…and mine have no calories. LOL Happy Thankful Thursday-Happy Pi Day.

      1. Hey, now, that is a terrific point you make there. LOL 😀 Happy Thankful Thursday-Happy Pi Day to you, too. I had to say it again because I forgot to say anything about Pi Day. Doh! LOLOL 😀

        1. 🤣 I usually forget myself. But after Legacy sent me a coupon for the Irish Cream, I had to save that pic. Oh my gosh, can you imagine the tastiness of that pie? 🥧
