Monday Musings ~ Memorial Day 2021

Memorial DayToday is Memorial Day in the U.S., a nationally recognized ‘howliday’ where we remember all those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. Originally it was known as Decoration Day following the Civil War when Union and Confederate soldiers honored their dead by decorating their graves with flowers. The moniker “Decoration Day” was first used in 1882 while “Memorial Day” wasn’t common until some time after World War II. The name was officially recognized in 1967.

Normally thought of as the unofficial start of summer, this year is acting more like November than May. For this morning’s walk, Norman was greeted with 48ºF and a light rain. The forecast indicates it will stay cool today but will start to warm-up tomorrow.

NormanWhatever you do today, we hope you take a moment to reflect on the occasion to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that you can be free to shop or BBQ. Have a safe holiday.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. We remember our veterans on 25th April. ANZAC DAY is a Public Holiday and a Day of Remembrance for all of the Veterans of the Australian New Zealand Army Corps of WW1.But we also use the day to remember all who served in both world wars and the conflicts afterwards. Although not to the same extent, we also remember 11th November. Only a few days to the official beginning of winter. Still, look on the bright side, only three months until Spring.

  2. Most countries in Europe we celebrate Veterans Day on 11th of November. But never mind which day a country is remembering their departed countrymen – We will always remember how they set us free by giving their life away. May They Rest In The Tranquility of Peace!

    1. We likewise celebrate veterans on November 11th. The minute difference is in the U. S. Memorial Day honors those veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and originated shortly after the Civil War whereas Veterans Day in November began following the end of WWI. Thanks for swinging by the Ranch; we 💙 visitors.

      1. I will surely keep visiting from now on. I am still figuring out how to install a Blog roll for Bloggers I follow so I can click there often and read what is going on at their side of their world. My Blog web builder is doing that for me. Will soon be ready

        1. Excellent. Blogging can be such a technology challenge but it also provides great rewards when you are able to touch others. I’ll be looking at your blog more closely! All the best.

  3. It definitely didn’t feel like summer for Memorial Day here. Luckily Monday it warmed up enough to be comfortable working outside (in between rain showers)!

    1. It was nice and quiet. Just like we like ‘em. Hope yours was a good one too.

        1. Drama anytime is no good but especially on long holiday weekends. Here’s to a great first week of June.

          1. You got that right. As old Blue Eyes once said, nice and easy does it. Like, all the time.

Here’s to June! We’re here already?

  4. I’ve caught up with you again. We re having high temperatures here this week. I’ll gladly take your current wet and cool weather. 🙂

    1. So long as we get a daily dose of sunshine I’m Jim-dandy happy with cool temps. Came home today snd the rain has left my yard a total jungle with blooming lupine.

  5. Amen brother!!!! Yes, we put our flag out as always, butts it seems peep forgot this year. Hey, it was 90 today, so if you wants to trade places, I’m all for it! BOL!!!

    Ruby ♥

    1. 90? Ugh…not ready for those kinds of temps just yet. I rather enjoyed the low 50’s today. Norman on the other hand wasn’t all that keen on the drizzle that lasted most of the day. He may be cute but what a wuss. 😂

  6. The weather’s been crazy here, too, with the highs and then the sudden lows. Thankfully, the basil plants have survived.
Stormin’ Normin’ you rock those glasses! We hope you all had a good holiday. XOX Xena and Lucy and Amy

    1. It was quiet mostly with more rain than I’ve seen down here. The prairie should look fabulous by week’s end.

  7. We too salute all who have fought and served our country so well.

Could someone please turn the rain off here??? It seems like it has rained almost every day for weeks now.

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

    1. Can’t recall this much rain here either. So strange but the forecast says it’ll begin to warm up and dry out starting tomorrow.

    1. Guess it depends on where you’re at. Another day of rain here which is highly unusual. Enjoy your day.

    1. It will beginning tomorrow.Don’t mind the rain-we can always use it.

Hello Monika: I want to remember the American soldier Lonnie Chapman who fought in the Vietnam War. He never made it home to USA> I used to write to his Family weekly for 3-4 years when he was listed as MIA. I lost touch with his family sadly. Last year I went on a Veteran site & I found out that Lonnie was deceased & buried in Vietnamese countryside.
May his memory be for a blessing!
    (((hugs))) Sherri-Ellen

      1. You know Monika I was 12 years old when I started writing the Chapman family. I wished I kept their letters….it was a different time. An to read about their lives & share about mine was very cool. I tried to get others in School to write to other families…..most Canadian kids did not care about the Vietnam War. They had no clue about WW1 or WW11…sad really….

        1. War isn’t a great thing to bind people together but when it does it can soothe a family’s heart.

          1. True about War but I hope in some way my letters to the Chapman family were a comfort.
I used to ask them about Lonnie & they would share funny stories about him as a child & teenager…I did all I could to keep him “ALIVE” for them…

  9. All the soldiers who fought to protect us from fascists and to protect our democratic system. I appreciate them

    1. You’re most welcome. I didn’t know it either. It’s easy to confuse Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.

    1. We are more energetic with cooler temps too. Until we got drenched. 😆

    1. Agreed. Throughout humanity, far too many people have forgotten that war is not the answer.

  10. The European date is in November…should always be the 11th,but politicians managd to muck that up by moving it to the next Sunday. It’s not only the members of the armed forces and auxiliary services who should be remembered…but their families too.

    1. Totally agree. One of my niece’s husband served for 20 years and I know how hard it was on his family. In the U.S. we celebrate November 11th as “Veterans Day” where we honor anyone who served. Yet retailers make it too much about special savings sales. 😢

  11. We remember those that gave their all today and everyday.

Norman wants you to link this post to Awww Mondays. I agree with him. Handsome he is.

Have a blessed Memorial day and week, my friend. Scritches to the pups and a smooch to Norman. ♥

    1. Thanks, Sandee! We wish you a pawsome Monday. Norman sends pupster kisses and butt wiggles.

  12. We got lucky this year. Historically Memorial Day in No. CA is cold. For some reason the latter part of May cools down before really heating up as we head into summer. Since the holiday is so late this year we got a good one. Enjoy the day instead of the chill and have a great week at the ranch.

    1. It’s ok, it’ll be getting hot soon enough so we plan to enjoy the cool till then. We wish you and yours a lovely holiday.

  13. Apparently this cold front has hit all over! Enjoy your howliday and yes, we must take a moment to thank those who gave up their lives for our freedom.

    1. It’s definitely odd weather this year, but I’m not complaining. I know in no time it’ll be hotter than blazes and will be wishing for cooler temps soon enough. Happy Monday! 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

        1. You know it (although we don’t get the kind of humidity you get; still…90’s just ain’t my cuppa tea).

    1. Thanks, Caren. We hope you, Lenny and fur-kids have a great holdiay.
