11th Annual Purple Day for Epilepsy

We’ve been busy driving back and forth to my Dad’s to get him settled in his new senior independent living facility and preparing his house for sale and won’t be posting the rest of this week. It’s been very hectic for me, but we continue to be very committed to supporting a cause that’s near and dear to my heart-canine epilepsy awareness. Which leads us to happily post our support for this year’s Purple Day for Epilepsy as hosted by the FiveSibes.

Purple Day

Even though my beloved Ninja Angel Elsa, earned her wings last year, we are once again participating in the annual Purple Day for Epilepsy Blog hop. Elsa was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy shortly after I adopted her. It was through their blog hops promoted by Dorothy Wills Raftery, the award winning author and epilepsy ambassador, along with co-hosts “Ruby the Therapy Dog, Knotty Toys For Good Dogs and Gibbs-erish Making Sense of Canine Epilepsy” (all can be found on Facebook), all of whom contributed valuable information that helped me provide Elsa with a good life. We will always be grateful for all the info that has been (and continues to be) shared over the years on their respective blogs and on their Facebook pages about canine epilepsy. I continue to remain ever so grateful for their help and all the information and resources that they shared about epilepsy over the years. Please visit the Purple Day website for additional information about epilepsy.

Elsa, epilepsyElsa was living proof that dogs who were diagnosed with this condition were still able to live relatively normal and happy lives so it’s only natural that Wilson wanted to participate in memory of his little sister by wearing her purple bandana.

Please check out the Purple Day blog hop post at the FiveSibes link. The more awareness is raised, the better we can support those who suffer from this condition.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. We miss her everyday. She’s still in our hearts though. Dad seems to be doing well so far. It’s quite an adjustment but so far, it’s going well with few hiccups.

    1. Thanks! He cleans up nicely. Yes, I felt Elsa’s spirit on Epilepsy Day. I’m sure she, Olivia and Gibson are all looking down on their mums.

    1. Thank you. I’m pretty passionate about epilepsy so it’s a labor of love. Elsa proved dogs with epilepsy could live normal lives.

  3. Lulu: “When our Dada was a kid his dog Missy had epilepsy and he was home alone with her when she had her first seizure and he had no idea what was happening or what to do. Apparently there was no Internet back then to look such things up, can you imagine? It’s great that these resources are available now!”

    1. When I was a kid we had a couple of cocker spaniels that had seizures. We had no clue either and are so grateful there are folks like FiveSibes who are amazing with tips and who share such great resources to help our beloved pets live normal lives.

  4. Thanks for showing Elsa’s picture (I miss her). Our last dog, Maddie, also had epilepsy, among other issues. Wilson looks great in the bandana – nice touch, big fellow.

    1. Thanks, Dan. Elsa will always have a presence here even though she’s not physically present. She was the heart and soul of the Ranch Hands.

  5. We hope your Dad does well in his new “home”…..that’s a big move. Loved the photo of beautiful Angel Elsa and “Mr. Handsome Wilson” wearing Elsa’s purple scarf. Sending you big hugs…………..

    Love, Pam and Teddy too

    1. Thanks, Pam and Teddy. Elsa will always carry our banner for epilepsy awareness even though she’s not physically present.

Dad is doing much better than anyone expected so we’re pleased so far. It is such an adjustment, especially for someone approaching his 96th year. We hope it continues. 🤞🏼

    1. I do too…it’s a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. Thanks for your kind comment.

    1. Thanks, Terry. I’m very passionate about sharing this because of Elsa.

Dad is doing surprisingly well and we’ve almost got the house ready to list. Yay!

  6. Angel Elsa was so luck to have you in her life which you literally saved! I hope things go well getting your dad settled. Hopefully he is a willing participant; so many seniors are not in his situation. Purple hugs to you and Wilson. Thank you for keeping this issue of canine Epilepsy in front of all of us. Take care and be well.

    1. You’re too kind, Mike. Elsa was a special dog from the get-go…I just didn’t realize for a while just how special and I worked every day to make her life better-she totally deserved it. Sharing info about epilepsy will always be a passion here.

Dad is getting more and more integrated in the new community. I’m excited at the community he’s in-lots of great residents and a first rate staff. I hope he thrives there!

    1. Thank you. So far, it seems to be going well and we’re close to getting the house listed. I’ll be glad when it’s all behind us.

  7. All good wishes for your dad Monika and so lovely to see sweet Wilson wear Elsa’s purple bandana for the 11th Annual Purple Day for Epilepsy in her memory ✨️💜✨️ xxx

    1. Thanks, John. Wilson is a good sport about posing. Purple Day is an event very near and dear to my heart because of sweet Elsa. She was such a trooper.

    1. Thank you, Amy-you’re too kind. We tried to let people know that epi-warriors can lead terrific lives. 💜

  8. Such a beautiful post, it brought tears to my eyes! Gorgeous Elsa is always remembered and in our hearts. I love that pic of her with my book. 💜Wilson looks so very handsome in his purple bandana supporting his angel sister and all Epi-dogs. I have added your lovely blog post to our blog hop so others can read it, too. Thank you for joining us on this day that is close to both of our hearts. I hope you get your Dad all settled in well, I remember doing this with my Mom. It’s huge and an emotional time. Sending hugs to you and Wilson!

    1. Many thanks, Dorothy. I so very much appreciate you and all you’ve done for epi-warriors.

We’re slowly clearing the house and doing lots of maintenance items that had been neglected. I hope whoever buys the house will be as happy as our family was there. 💜

  9. Wilson, you are such a good and thoughtful boy. Gramma is 89 and will not leave her home. It is a lot of work for Mom, her brother and the grandkids to always be there to help her with everything. She should be in a facility as she can barely see and really only goes out if we take her to appts or on holidays. It is hard timewise and emotionally but we do it out of love. Her house is full so some day that will be a big project. Good luck with your dad and selling his home.

    1. Many thanks. Dad is approaching 96 and with his vision starting to diminish, he really needed to be around people who can help him better. I know what you speak of in terms of getting them to appointments and dealing with time constraints, especially when you don’t live that close. We too do it out of love. At least Dad (and Mom when she was still alive) did a lot of purging and they weren’t hoarders which helped. Some of the deferred maintenance projects have been a bit time consuming but hopefully he’ll get a nice price on the sale of the house that has loads of wonderful memories. 🤞🏼

    1. You’re always too kind with your comments about our headers, Helen. As a family we’re very close, both between the siblings as well as the spouses. We’re truly blessed.

  10. That’s a great cause and Wilson looks so handsome in his purple bandana. I’m glad Elsa was able to be a strong ambassador. Moving is tough, but it seems to be the working up to it that brings alot of memories. I hope all goes smoothly.

    1. Many thanks, Martha. We were so fortunate for all the help and resources shared to make Elsa’s life good. I’ve had epileptic dogs before but never had the tips and resources that were shared by FiveSibes and the other co-hosts. They were simply ‘pawsome’ and I believe implementation of those tips had a very positive impact on her quality of life.

Moving is the pits. I just went through it 3 months ago and I’m still suffering PTSD at the mere thought. We’ve encountered a few costly hiccups but our family is very close and everyone has stepped up to help out. We hope to list it soon. Wish us luck!

  11. Moving is stressful even if it isn’t you who is moving. Please make sure you take time to rest between drives.

I had never heard of Purple Day for Epilepsy. Thank you for providing the information.

    1. You’re most welcome, Julia. There is a ton of info that the FibeSibes provided over the years that really helped me treat Elsa’s epilepsy effectively. I’ll always be grateful for all the info and resources.

As I like to say, “no rest for the wicked and the righteous don’t need it.” Still trying to determine which one I am though. LOL

  12. Definitely a worthy cause and you’ve been a strong supporter for a long time! Careful driving out there on those relocation trips for dad and take care – stressful time for you all.

    1. Many thanks, Tom. We were so blessed to have found the FiveSibes-they gave me hope while treating Elsa for ten years and provided me with so much useful info. They are the best!

Moving Dad has been so busy and I’m just now starting to feel the emotional aspect of him leaving his home of nearly 40 years. I can’t imagine how it’s made him feel. So many memories have been triggered as we ready the house for sale.

  13. Such a worthy cause and sending much love in memory of your Ninja xoxo
And to you, lots of energy to help with your daddy 🙂

    1. Many thanks. Dad is doing surprisingly well. I’m beginning to be quite nostalgic about the house. Seems strange to be leaving it.

      1. I don’t doubt you are! It’s hard to leave behind. I was lucky, I bought my parent’s house when they divorced. I was very sad to move into the big-ass one. If it had been up to me, I would still be there.

        1. Oh gosh, I can’t even imagine. I’ve been so focused on getting the house ready but yesterday I started feeling the emotions of leaving it. It must be even more emotional for my Dad.

  14. Sending love for Elsa’s memory. She was a beauty. Good luck with moving your dad. These things are hard work and emotionally fraught. Hopefully he will like his new digs.

    1. Thanks, Kate. He’s doing surprisingly well in his new apartment. The siblings and I have all been working hard to ready the house for sale. It’s been a lot of hard work but it’s triggered a lot of beautiful memories in a home filled with loving people.

Feel free to bark your thoughts...but please no growling.
