Monday Musings ~ January 17, 2022

Welcome to Monday but today is not just any Monday.  Today we honor two giants of humanity, Martin Luther King (MLK) and Betty White. Around the country, parades are being held with an emphasis on the participants honoring the civil rights leader through a day of national service. Since 1994, the day of service is being coordinated nationally by AmeriCorps, a federal agency which provides grants to organizations coordinating service activities on MLK Day. The only other national day of service in the U.S. officially designated by the government, is September 11th’s National Day of Service (9/11 Day).

Today would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday. Fans of the “Golden Girls” star who passed away recently, have created a virtual event asking for donations of $5 be made to animal rescues or shelters in her name. White was a big animal lover and well known for her efforts of saving endangered species. She helped fix conditions at the Los Angeles Zoo.

In addition to her efforts at the LA Zoo, White was also a big supporter of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The zoo’s entrance to the “Heart of Africa Exhibit” was named Betty White Way in 2014 in her honor.

Betty White

We typically use Monday’s for sharing a smile, but today we also support of the efforts of both of these legendary Americans. Everyone at the Ranch supports the essence of MLK Day as well as the remarkable work of Betty White and hope you’ll participate in a meaningful way to honor both of these special people. May your Monday be the beginning of a good week filled with smiles and positive actions, just go easy on the mice, okay?

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Charlee: “We had mice in our house once. Mama and Dada could tell because I alerted them by sitting in the kitchen staring at the cabinet without moving a muscle for a long long long long time, waiting for the mice to come out.”
Lulu: “I’m not sure that qualifies as an ‘alert’ but okay.”

  2. Maybe this day should happen every year, just as the MLK day does. Betty was very special.

That cartoon has me grinning, and I feel for poor wee mousies…but they try to come into our house every time we get ‘The Winter’…mostly its deer mice. The worst was last year, and they got into some of my food storage cabinets. OMD! What a mess and what a loss of food, too. Why don’ they just build their nests somewhere else? LOL!

    1. They’re cute little buggers but I don’t want them in my house either. Then they give me the willies. 🐭🐭🐭

  3. That hits home. My peep shook hands with MLK on the way out of hearing him speak. The same peep knew Allen Ludden (the love of Betty’s life) but didn’t know Betty.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the cartoon. It made me snicker.

And thank you for making a donation. Very kind of you. 😍

  5. Two very wonderful people to honor and celebrate. I did the Betty White Challenge this morning.

Love the funny. You made me laugh out loud.

Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches to the pups, a smooch to Norman and a big hug to you. ♥

    1. That’s very kind of you! I’m hoping shelters for well because of the connection to Betty White.

Maybe we should have a campaign for mice this week 😉 LOL

  6. That cartoon is hilarious! We donated today to our local SPCA – where we adopted both Angel Sammy and our darling Teddy. Betty White and Martin Luther King, Jr. both VERY SPECIAL people to honor today.

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Aww, bless you. Betty White is no doubt smiling at the thought of so many good people picking up where she left off. 🙏🏼

  7. Mom donated to our local shelter from herself (and me) and also in memory of one of her former students who passed away recently. She loved Betty and had 7 shelter dogs. That is not the shelter where Mom found me, but she is about to look that one up and donate another $5 to them for the #bettywhitechallenge.

    Love and licks,

  8. I have a feeling there will be lots of donations today! It’s interesting…..2 humanitarians both born the same week of January. MLK Jr was technically born January 15, Betty White January 17……

    1. People like MLK and Betty White give me a bit of hope that goodness will prevail in a world of hate and cruelty.

    2. Two amazing humans plus a third, I learned today. Michelle Obama is also celebrating a birthday. #58 for the former First Lady who will leave her own inspirational legacy.

Feel free to bark your thoughts...but no growling please.
