MLK Monday ~ January 15, 2024

MLK

Today is Martin Luther King Day where it’s a legal holiday in the U.S. As I searched for an inspiring quote, I came across this one and it seemed particularly appropriate.

Even if it’s MLK Day where we honor the civil right leader, we still need to start the day out with a smile, or in this case a couple of smiles since I couldn’t decide on just one.

With the Arctic blast coming from our friends in the Northern Hemisphere (hey Canada, I thought we were allies), today’s smiles seemed to fit the bill about getting through it and moving forward. Today’s high will likely be zero; if we’re real lucky, we might reach 1-2ยบF (-16ยบ or -17ยบC). But we’re not the only ones shivering. Things could be worse, I just heard the forecast for Iowa. Thank you baby Jesus that today is not primary ballot day.

Monday smile

The cold weather around here brings the sarcastic out in some of us which may mean everyone from Colorado to New England could easily be saying something like this.

Monday Smile

Not only was it cold this morning on the first potty run, it was also beginning to snow. Sigh. Can’t wait until tomorrow where we may actually reach freezing. Now where are those flip-flops?

Whatever you do today to commemorate MLK, we hope you do it safely and with positive intention like Dr. King. Hang in there, the countdown clock toward tulip season has begun and there’s only 64 days until Spring officially arrives. Thought you could use something to look forward to while you’re shivering, shoveling and swearing. Happy Monday. Stay safe and keep smiling, peeps.

Live, love, bark! ๐Ÿพ

    1. MLK’s words still make sense this day and age. Maybe even more so. We hope you stay safe, cozy and warm. This week’s storms are a good reason to stay indoors and R&R. Hugs and tail wags.

  2. Great quote!

As for the weather, we had snow overnight and throughout the morning. Pretty and powdery, the only horrible part of it is the fact that we’re never prepared! It took them all morning to plow the roads here.

    1. Wait, they plow your roads? Only the major arterial streets here. If youโ€™re on a side street, youโ€™re on your own ๐Ÿ˜ฌ And yes, it sucks and is a major bone of contention when I pay my real estate taxes. Grrrr

        1. It was too butt chilling cold to shovel until today. With the temps reaching the mid 30โ€™s, it felt paradise. No more subzero temps. Woot, woot (well until the next storm) ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Thankfully the only snow we have now is lake effect…if it can reach us, =and yes it often does. Phooey!
We got about 8 inches total…and this morning it went down to about -7 or 8F. Brrr, but warm compared to some other areas.
I wanted to make use of the block heater I have for my engine, but It was stuck…after a repair done to my bumper several months ago. They made it inaccessible, event the mechanics I took it to this morning couldn’t get it out…they have to take off the bumper…so I had to make an appointment for that! Yikes! But the heater really makes for easier starts on these cold days. Especially since we do not have a garage.

Great quote, and those were good funnies!

B & D go out to do their outside duties and RUN back in way faster than usual, BOL! Benji still runs through all the snow to check on the old shed in the back to see/hope if he can snag a squirrel …they actually got in there and now have a huge stash of walnuts in there, UGH! That shed will have to come down when my sons can help us get rid of it…it’s falling apart! But such a ‘haven’ for the tree rats, BOL! Where ever will they nest when its gone, Tee-hee…hopefully not in our cellar or attic…like they did at our neighbor’s house years ago.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the MLK quote snd the smiles. Ugh, Iโ€™m with you when it comes to despising tree rats. Little destructive buggars! Stay warm.

    1. Itโ€™s been miserable all day & all night. Back down to -5F now with windchill at -15F. Tomorrow should be better-theyโ€™re saying low 30โ€™s. Have my gloves crossed thatโ€™s right. ๐Ÿงค๐Ÿฅถ

  4. Good day! I found it interesting reading all the comments on the cold when I am just about to head off to Quorn, the other Side of the Lower Flinders Ranges with a temperature here 0f 33c and a temperature there of 37c From the A/C here to the A/C in the car to the A/C at Flinders House in Quorn. You all try to keep warm and I’ll try to keep cool. Apart from that – have a great day.

    1. Thanks, Frank. His words still resonate after all this time. And they’re needed more than ever these days.

  5. I love cold and snow , it’s supposed to be cold in Colorado, but next week back up near 50 which isn’t as normal. Milo however, doesn’t like wearing his poodle boots when it’s below zero, but when you’re a model you gotta look good, amiright Elsa?

    1. I don’t generally mind winter but man this cold has been something else. And can someone turn the snowmaking machine off? ๐Ÿ˜†

  6. Thanks for the smiles. A great MLK quote to live by. We are cold, but yes, sooo much better than other places like Iowa and Montana! I can’t imagine those temps. It was colder in Montana today than Alaska!
We could get a couple inches of snow overnight, so will see what we wake up to in the morning.
Stay warm! Relax inside with Hot cocoa. ๐Ÿ™‚ and Elsa snuggled up against you.

    1. I’ve been commandeered by a certain new pupster who has quite the concept of dog pile. But it’s all good on a day where it’s snowing, and the temps are hovering at -3ยบF with a windchill of -17ยบF. Yeah, I’m not Iowa or Montana-type winter stock and not embarrassed to admit it. Stay warm and safe.

        1. Sounds like it. See Friday’s Nature Friday post for details. ๐Ÿ˜‰ [https://tailsaroundtheranch.blog/2024/01/12/nature-friday-january-12-2024/]

  7. I felt guilty telling my brother in Iowa that it was 16ยฐf (-9ยฐc) here this morning. That was over 20 degrees warmer. Our “Feels like” temp was over 40 degrees warmer than his and he had to go out while I stayed in sipping my coffee.

    1. After hearing about the immediate conditions in Iowa this morning, I too feel sheepish about complaining. I don’t know how those Great Plain states handle it with their high humidity. Too brutal for us! It’s currently -3F (windchill -17F) and other than quite potty breaks for the dogs, I’m not going out in it! Oh and it’s been snowing all morning. Yeah, I’m whining.

        1. Not particularly-although Elsa used to when she was younger. It’s been so cold they do their business fairly quickly and hobble back inside to warm up frozen paws.

    1. On a day like today, shoveling is the farthest thing on my to-do list! Stay safe and warm this MLK Monday.

    1. So glad you liked the quote and today’s smiles. You know me, love a good pun and the nasty snowstorm fit that bill. It’s snowing here (something that surprised me) and still in the negative numbers at nearly 11 AM. Welp! Happy Monday, John.

            1. ๐Ÿ˜ It’s 3 this morning-practically balmy and we should break 20ยบF around 10:30. Today is going to be very exciting.

    1. Wait…you guys are always hard at work bringing joy and smiles to your parents. Sorry the parents have to do conventional work, they may need an extra snuggle or pupster kiss after a long hard day of work.

  8. Wow thatโ€™s cold. I hope those nasty flakes melt away quickly. Good thing you have another Ranch Hand to keep you warm this week! I hope that new sweet boy of yours is fitting in, snuggling with Elsa, and brightening your days.

    1. Trust me Mike, the ‘Not Sam’ dog has given new meaning to the term ‘dog pile.’ While he and Elsa aren’t snuggling, he’s making sure I don’t get cold as well as not being able to move from under his weight. LOL Happy Monday!

    1. Glad we could provide a smile on a day where the weather is the pits. It’s been amazing that (a) there’s snow today and (b) potty breaks have been short. Not a lot of sniffing going on around the Ranch and you’ll hear no complaints by me on that front! Happy Monday, happy MLK day.

  9. I needed this today! We actually have a sliver of something bright between the cloudsโ€ฆ what could it be?๐Ÿ˜€

    1. A miracle? We are buried under thick cloudy skies and (at least to me) an unexpected snowfall to go with the bitter cold temps and wind chills. Moving forward in keeping with MLK’s message we’re looking at far more seasonal temps, dare I say a warming trend? Looking forward to low 30’s & 40’s. Stay safe, cozy and warm. Happy MLK Day.

  10. Love the quote and love the funnies. It’s just cold here and rain is coming next week. We’re good with that.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to Elsa. โ™ฅ

    1. Thanks, Sandee. Happy MLK Day. Today will be the coldest day in this Arctic blast. Currently -2F with windchill making it feel like -19F. And it’s snowing lightly which we weren’t expecting. Good day to stay in inside.

  11. That is one of my favorite quotes from Dr. King actually. Today I will work, not because I have to – but because I want to. Dr. King made it possible for me to be able to choose and I choose to honor him by doing what I love… Thanks for making me smile!

    1. Giving back to the community the way you do is the essence of what this day is all about. Bless your efforts-may it be a good day. Happy Monday, Happy MLK Day to you and yours.

  12. Remember — Canada sends us their geese, too. I begin to question their motives …

But your quote is perfect — you must always be moving forward.

    1. Hmm, good point. Egad…you’re absolutely right. Here’s a ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป for moving forward. Happy MLK Monday.

  13. To commemorate this holiday, we are working as usual and running a few errands. Anyway, we love the bitter cold we get a few times a year. We too are below zero for a few days, should go above again tomorrow afternoon. Mom loves the crisp air and the way it freezes her face. It makes us doggies wild and we love to romp around in it too. The only issue is that Mom’s eyelashes freeze on our walks so sometimes it gets hard for her to see, but she doesn’t mind. They thaw quickly once she goes into the house. Enjoy the day!

    1. With our mile high altitude, your breath gets taken away in this kind of cold. Stay safe while doing your errands and have a super Monday!

  14. I think you are being a tad harsh with us, Monika. I don’t know what you are talking about this freezing weather. It’s a balmy 21 here! Okay, by Friday, we will have 7 but, that’s not awful ๐Ÿ˜‰
Love the cartoons!! And that MLK quote is a classic that is so good.

    1. Sorry, the weather made me taunt you guys…just a bit. ๐Ÿ˜‚ But all in good fun. Nature has a way of spreading the joy and the misery around. Enjoy the ‘warmer’ temps while you can. Happy Monday.

      1. You know I jest. They are freaking out in BC – they are our wimps of the country…
I will ! Happy Monday to you and stay warm!

  15. Love the water color! Fabulous…… Also LOVE the SPARK – I’ve kind of lived my life with this thought in the back of my head through all my “challenges” – and it is something I strongly believe in. Maxine has her finger on the pulse of MANY of us doesn’t she. HAHA

Stay cozy – I’m watching snow come down right this minute!

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Thank you. The snow seems to have picked up here. I wasn’t expecting that additional indignity today. LOL Yes, Maxine nails it once again. Happy Monday, happy MLK Day.
