Monday Musings ~ November 3, 2025

Pumpkins - LandfillHappy first Monday of November! We hope you survived the onslaught of ghosts and goblins and have properly disposed of the half chewed up pumpkins. Did you know that throwing pumpkins in landfills creates loads of methane which contributes to climate change. Best to compost them for next year’s flower beds.

Have you ever roasted the seeds from your porch Jack-o-lantern? It’s a slimey exercise but boy howdy, they sure are tasty snacks.

We survived the neighborhood kids doorbell ringing by placing our treats on a small table and inviting them to take a treat without sending Wilson into protective mode by sending him into an extreme eardrum-splitting alarm. He and I rested calmly and by 10 pm, all but about 6 pieces of Hershey nuggets had been taken and were promptly saved for Saturday’s lunch snack with my granddaughter’s house. I’d have to rate this year’s holiday a resounding success even if I didn’t get to see all the adorable costumes for the little ones coming to the door.

Halia - Halloween
Great granddaughter Halia enjoying her first trick-or-treating in  her neighborhood

Today is the first weekday back on standard time. If you were like some people (me), you spent a bit of time yesterday trying to remember how to reset the car clock or re-adjusting clocks that don’t automatically change around the house. After decades of changing clocks, you’d think I’d have changing the dining room, a pendulum clock, the art studio, microwave and stove clocks down pat for the manual switch. You’d be wrong. This is why I save all instruction manuals for appliances and have even tabbed the owner’s manual in my car to the page on how to manually change the clock since thee is no “how to change your clock page in the table of contents (WTH Mazda?). Thank god there are no VCR’s with their flashing blue clocks these days. Changing that clock after a power outage and the twice a year time adjustment practically took an act of god. Goodbye and good riddance to that old fashioned technology. The alarm clock in my bedroom automatically changes but it’s old enough that it’s always off for a week or so. Good thing I don’t have to rely on it to get up in time to leave for work. I just wait it out until the switches back (or forward) to the ‘correct’ time.

Which leads me to today’s smile. I couldn’t help but think how many similar scenes to this one were happening all over the country. For his own reaction, Wilson hopped up on my bed when I got up and curled up in the covers until he realized my getting up meant he could go outside and possible scare round up a bunny in the low light like he did a couple of mornings ago. Nothing like chasing a full speed Sherman tank down the alley in low light conditions wearing flip-flop slippers. Imagine his disappointment when he realized it was a rabbit and not the bane of his existence-a squirrel.

DST

We hope today’s reunion with the weekday world was easy enough, the yawns were kept to a minimum and you didn’t have to overdose on caffeine. Have a wonderful Monday.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Halia’s a real cutie. I don’t much Halloween with the sole exception of the little kids dressed in their outfits, They’re so stinkin’ cute – irresistible. Oh, free candy is good too, it makes the glucose meter do such funny things!

    1. Aww thank you. I’m pretty smitten by that little cutie. And thank you for swinging by; we 💙 visitors.

  2. Java Bean: “Ayyy, I don’t know why humans feel the need to mess with us all by changing the clocks around! At least here we have Chaplin to punish them for it by yowling for his breakfast at 5:00 in the morning.”
    Chaplin: “I don’t care what the clocks say! It’s not 5:00, it’s 6:00 and it’s time for breakfast!”

    1. Trust me, Bean…I ask that same question twice a year myself! It’s such a stupid idea-you can’t really manipulate time.

  3. Yeah I thought I had covered all the clocks until I looked at the microwave this morning and went “Holy crap! The time!”. It turns out the time wasn’t the problem, it was the time keeper.

    1. LOL…yeah the microwave is almost always the last clock to get changed at my house too. Seems so sad such a valiant, hand working appliance gets treated so cavalierly. 😂

  4. I agree about the time changing nonsense. I want year round standard time, after all how can the sun be wrong?
    Years ago when my father still had his business (which was part of our house), there were oodles of clocks to change…at least three clocks with pendulums, and other with a key windups and chimes. Not to mention all the many watches…my Dad was a watchmaker/clockmaker/Jeweler…now I have two of those pendulum clocks at my house. To set them forward is easy. Setting them back is harder, but I just stop the pendulum for an hour and then restart them. The trick is to remember that you stopped them!
    I also change the time early in the morning so that the new time is already in my mind…
    If any of my ‘special’ clocks are off the chimes, my dad taught me the trick to reset them…it’s not that hard to do, but it is very hard to explain that here, LOL! Just remember to never pull up the weights after 5 minutes before it chimes…or you’ll be needing this trick!
    ‘Winnie the Pooh’ is super duper cute and sweet! Just look at that determined look on her face and the I can do this by myself look about her!! Awww!

    1. The switching back and forth is ridiculous for so many reasons,not the least of which is the aggravation of changing clocks. Research now suggests that being on standard time is more healthful. It’s total folly to think we can trick time through manipulation.

      Yes, the ‘Pooh’ girl is quite independent and really got into it. Her pumpkin bag was nearly as big as her! She’s suddenly become aware of handbags and is really into carrying one. She’s too funny.

  5. Happy Tuesday! May not be Monday, but I still had a good laugh with your meme of the yawning dog. My sweet Abbi yawns like that every morning as she stretches. 🙂
    LOL about Wilson’s rabbit, not a squirrel. Poor Wilson, lucky squirrel. 😉
    Hope your Tuesday is going well!
    And yes, about pumpkins feeding other animals or using it for compost.

    1. I swear, a good stretch and a yawn are what keep dogs in shape. Well that and maybe the occasional dash after a certain hoodlum rodent. 🤣

  6. I stay outdoors with the candy from 6-8, the “official” hours. That way I get to see some of the cute kids and don’t have to go to the door over and over, no chance of the cat running off.

    As for the dog chasing a bunny, it does sound funny after the fact. At the time, I can only imagine what you were thinking.

    1. Sounds like your Halloween was the best of both worlds. Cute kids, safe kitty.

      It was pretty dark and I’m sure that poor bunny was terrified being chased by a fast as lightning pooch. He took off like a flash, must have realized he doesn’t get after bunnies but he came as soon as I called him. Good thing…I was out of breath chasing in the dark. Whew! Hope it’s been a pawsome Monday!

    1. Thanks, Terry. She’s one sassy independant little girl and I love her to pieces. With that feline crew, it’s a wonder you get any sleep! Hope it’s been a great Monday.

  7. We love pumpkin seeds. I never reset the car clock. I leave it wrong for half the year. 🙂 XO

    1. Pumpkin seeds are sooo tasty AND good for you. Ha…that’s a good strategy on the car clock. Even a broken one is right twice a day, right? LOL
      Happy Monday!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Jack. We hope you have a great Monday and a wonderful month!

  8. Mew mew mew Miss Monika mee thinkss you an BellaSita ARE reelated! Shee two keepss innstrucktion manualss so shee can change THE time an what efur’r else needss to bee dun. Wee both so sleepy since THE ‘Fall Back’; we wanna ‘Spring Forewerd’ an furget DST time…BLEH!!!!
    Yore comick fore today meowss it all!!!!!
    ~~~head rubss~~~BellaDharma~~~ ab **giggless** BellaSita Mum
    1. As I get older, it’s easy to forget how things work…or should work. 😉 “Falling back” is actually easier for us than the “spring forward” but the changing back and forth is ridiculous. We think we should pick one or the other and stick with it. Have a pawtastic Monday!
  9. I’m just like that doggie before my first (only) cup of coffee. And a local farm posts that they’ll take the pumpkins for their animals, which is way cool.
    1. I think a lot of us resemble that dog, especially until their biorhythms adapt to the new time switcheroo. How wonderful that a farm will take the pumpkins for their animals! That’s awesome. Have a wonderful Monday!
  10. Yep, we’ve got 2 clocks in the kitchen and 3 in our bedroom/bath we have to change every 6 months, but they’re all easy. I forgot about the time change and was trying to wake up my sleeping husband an hour early to get up and get ready for church! (We go to the early service at 8am.)
    1. Oops, I’ll bet a lot of peeps were woken up early 😉 Here’s hoping every one gets the rest they need for a furbulous Monday!
  11. We had a QUIET Halloween – no trick or treaters! We were ready but it was so quiet you could almost hear a pin drop out in the community. Well, that’s a SLIGHT exaggeration but in the old days we could hear laughing and see lanterns being carried up driveways, etc. ZIP this year. We think our neighborhood “dynamic” has changed too much – as in kids are grown and “too old” for trick or treating. So I was FORCED (ha) to eat more candy than I would normally (what is normal?!) have. I put all the porch decorations away for another year and hope maybe for better days – all these old people around here have grandkids right? Right? I hope so!
    Love, Pam (and Teddy who didn’t get to see any ghosts)
    1. Quiet is good. There’s nothing worse than a barking dog every time the doorbell rings. I never know if we’ll have no kids or a dozen (in the 23+ years I’ve lived here we may have had 30-40 total! Usually it’s because we’ve had a snow storm but not this year. Just cold I decided to put a table out with a bowl of candy. It was 99% emptied (thank goodness!). When I worked, I’d take all the leftovers in to the office but if I’d had any leftover, I might have taken them to a senior center for folks to enjoy. 😉 Have a wonderful Monday!
  12. For whatever reason, the dogs decided to sleep through the time change. That never happens, and I guess keeping them up at night was a good thing in retrospect. We are with you on feeling that this whole time change thing is a waste of time (Hmm 😳 that was awkward). There are so few farmers left in the US that I say we stop the madness.
    1. Hahaha…I saw what you did there. Good one! The whole notion that it helps farmers is absurd in this modern age. Every couple of years someone brings it up in Congress to watch it slowly die in the House…like everything else these days. At any rate, we hope you have a Happy Monday and the dogs stay primed to stay on schedule for you.
  13. The fall back time change guarantees that the fur babies will start looking for dinner even earlier than usual!
    1. Considering how regimented they are to routine, it has to be vexing for them too with this change. Hope your kitty regulates quickly. Happy Monday!
  14. We didn’t have any pumpkins this year and I’ve never messed with the seeds either.
    We didn’t have any trick or treaters this year. We have a gate that makes it impossible to get to our front door. We like it.
    I linked this post to the Awww Mondays Blog Hop.
    Have a fabulous Awww Monday and week. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to handsome Wilson. ♥
    1. As always, we appreciate you linking us up to your Monday hop. You’re always so kind-thank you. My son craved some amazing likenesses of Bert and Ernie (he’s so artistic and creative) and I helped de-seed them. It’s a slimy gross mess but he insisted it’s worth it once they’re roasted.
      Usually the weather limits the number of visitors but we didn’t have a snow storm this year so there were a few. In past years there were some who braved the snow which seemed silly (just go buy a bag of candy-I didn’t want to keep opening the door and letting in all that cold air) so I turned off the outdoor lights and closed the front gate myself. You hate to do it when it’s nasty and cold but sheesh…you can buy bags of mini treats without having to endure the elements. Have a furbulous Monday, Sandee!
  15. The picture of the first trick-or-treat for the great granddaughter is…great. As for the dog at the diner, I will admit to yawning myself when I saw that. Could not help it lol. As for the nonsense that is daylight time…Many years ago, Mrs. B and I got the idea to get up the day before and change all the time pieces to the adjustment time so we had a full day to adjust ourselves. It works for us, if only on a placebo level. If nothing else, I get up on “day one” already having adjusted the dozen or so thingys that need adjusted. Yet, even though it is twice a year…I have to stare at the car dashboards for a couple of minutes to remember how to set those times. Have a great week, Monika!
    1. Thanks, Bruce. It was fun watching her enjoy dressing up. She even chose the costume herself-little Miss Independent. Yawning truly is contagious, whether done by a ‘hooman’ or a pet apparently! Glad you have a strategy that works for you on the time reset. It’s dumb to get so worked up over it but nothing cheeses me off more than this twice a year debacle. It was especially irksome when Elsa was alive because adjusting her medications to stay on the 12 hr. cycle of anti-seizure meds was a total pain. Bless her heart, she was a trooper taking the meds and all the dogs lined up for the cheddar pockets I made for her. Here’s to arriving on time this week even if it’s dark. Happy Monday!
  16. I hated all the clocks. I had a few wrist watches that I would switch up. Every one had to be reset. Now I have a Fitbit and Mr. Fitbit does it for me. They finally made the car clock easy so it’s just appliances now. It used to take at least an hour. For the car I one time drove it for the 6 months mentally adjusting the time because it was so dang complicated.
    1. I know exactly about driving for months mentally adjusting the time. I could always tell when my mind was fatigued because I’d freak out about the display. LOL Have a wonderful Monday, Kate!
    1. Isn’t she the cutest little miss sassy pants? She really got into Halloween this year and enjoyed showing one of her books with ghosts and pumpkins to me. Have a wonderful Monday, Helen and a great month in general.
  17. That clock reset–annoying! My Grandfather clock bonged the wrong hours for a decade before I figured out the trick. I was too busy with kids and work to put mental energy to its problem. Now, I got it.
    Happy November!
    1. Oh gosh…those Grandfather clocks can be tricky with that weight. Glad you got it figured out. It’s always the littlest things that bug us the most, isn’t it? Happy Monday, Jacqui!
    1. Trust me, he needs no encouragement when it comes to squirrels. Have a Happy Monday!
  18. Hahaha! Damn DST…
    I’m lucky, my car is super easy, so no stress. It’s trying to remember where all the clocks are. Not too bad, only four for me – alarm clock that is basically just there so I can see what time it is when I get up in the middle of the night, microwave (I think I forgot to do that one because it is behind a cupboard door, stove and car.
    I feel like the dog above 😉
    Happy Monday!
    1. Everyone knows how I feel about this twice a year blatant show of stupidity. We hate it. You can’t manipulate time even if you’re arrogant enough to believe you can. Once I find the clock setting in the car, it’s simple to switch. I just can never remember where it’s at! Argh.
      Have a great week!
        1. It sure is…and if you ever want to crank my handle just mention it! Hahaha. Happy Monday, Dale.
        1. Thanks for sharing that article. I know a lot of people prefer DST being the ultimate permanent change but I personally feel like standard time would have better overall health outcomes. We need some down time in this crazy busy, busy world. Now if we can just convince politicians to actually do something the people want. What a novel idea that’d be!
          1. My pleasure. Few are the ones I know who enjoy it. Just leave the time alone. Our body gets used to the change gradually.
            Yeah, keep dreaming!
  19. Let me amuse you all on a Monday. The yawning dog made me remember. I was born and raised in NYC. In my young adulthood the worse thing was Monday mornings and having to get to the subway and head for work. There I sat wishing I was in bed and a lady sits across from me with a small dog in her bag. The dog looks at me and I look at him and the dog starts yawing. I cannot help it I have to yawn too and then my eyes get teary and my mascara starts to run and I have to get to work. SIGH
    1. Hahaha, sorry for the snicker but I can totally picture that comical scene. They say yawning is contagious-sounds like there’s something to that! Hope you have a fantastic Monday and rest of the week!
