Memorial Day Monday ~ 2022

Holidays

While today is the ‘unofficial’ beginning of summer, we think of it as a day of reflection around the Ranch and plan to honor all service members, particularly those in our family who have served their country, with a special shout out to a niece’s son who graduated from high school this past week and enlisted in the Air Force just like both of his parents did. Way to go, Levi.

Memorial Day, a national holiday in the U.S., is where we officially remember and mourn all who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. Originally known as “Decoration Day” following the Civil War when both Union and Confederate soldiers honored their dead by decorating their graves with flowers, it has morphed into its current form honoring all Americans who served and paid the ultimate price of freedom.

Have a safe and reflective day.

    1. Because it seems certain there’ll always be war, we must remember those who make the ultimate sacrifice.

    1. Thanks, Cupcake. That’s high praise coming from one of our favorite pawtriotic pups!

  2. Nice job by the kids, they look so good in their Memorial Day finest. And big thank you to Levi for making a difference. All the best to him.

    1. The kids say thanks. Levi is such s great kid, the Air Force will be lucky to have him.

    1. Thanks, dear Kitty. We take this howliday very seriously as several members of the family are veterans.

  3. I was dumb-struck when I heard on NPR News that the Civil War caused more American deaths than any other war. Then my hubbie pointed out that whoever was killed in the war, they were always an American. It’s all just so sad. Then I think about the current “war” in Ukraine. It’s not a war, it’s a slaughter. I wish we could drop a “peace potion” in all the drinking water of the world.

    1. A peace potion would be something very useful this day and age. Sadly it appears that war has always had a strong presence in humanity’s DNA.

  4. my comment seems to have been eaten. I said thank you to the son who serves. Thank you to all who actually protect our constitution as well. Your housepups are just so adorable

  5. thank you to the son… and all who protect the constitution while we’re at it. Love the opening cartoon, so true and your two housepups are just the cutest

  6. Our freedom came at a cost and we remember that every day but especially Memorial Day. The pups look fabulous in their patriotic gear – even if they aren’t thrilled they’re being good sports! Have a peaceful day of reflection and a “side order” of fun with the family.

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

  7. The cost is more than most of us can imagine. Thanks to all who have served/serve. Happy Memorial Day. Lee and Phod

    1. That’s so very true. We Americans in particular tend to take freedom for granted.

  8. Nice post, M. Americans need to remember what the day is all about and honor it as such in a solemn way.
Love the patriotic head gear, you two! <3

    1. Thank you, Eliza. They (well mostly Elsa but can you blame her?) weren’t all that keen on the head gear, but luckily they seem to realize it means something special to their mum. Americans in particular seem to have amnesia when it comes to who provides their freedom.

    1. That’s an understatement! But she’s a good sport most of the time. I just have to remember to take the shot quickly and stop laughing at her expressions. Happy Memorial Day.

  9. Beautiful post and you have the pups there too and especially Norman. Nothing better than that.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays as usual.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. Scritches to the pups, a smooch to Norman and a bit hug to you. ♥

    1. Thanks, Sandee. We hope you have a wagnificent week! Norman sends his best Monday Musing wishes.

    1. 🇺🇸 Thank you-as you can imagine, Elsa wasn’t keen on the ‘accessories’ but she was a decent enough of a sport. 🇺🇸

  10. Thank you to all the servicemen and women past and present who have served your country and their families who have often borne the cost. Congratulations to your niece’s son and wishing him well.
    Best wishes,
    Rowena
PS Sorry forgot to mention the dogs are gorgeous what with Norman’s hat and Elsa’s dreds. Well done!

    1. Veterans throughout the world deserve our respect and gratitude, especially those whose ultimate sacrifice keeps us all safe at home.

  11. Thank you, Luke! May your service time be amazing, and may God surround you with angels to keep you safe.

Freedoms such as we are blessed with ere are VERY expensive indeed…

A wonderful patriotic picture, Norman and Elsa!

    1. Amen to that sentiment. I’ve sadly witnessed the damage first hand and it’s heartbreaking.

  12. I’m digging those red white and blue dreads that Elsa is sporting. Have a nice day at the Ranch. We’re getting anti BBQ weather here at the Golden K. Typical Memorial Day Weekend weather; cloudy, windy, and cool. Sigh…. Oh well warmer days are in our near future. Oh yeah, and…. Way to go Luke! Thank you for your upcoming service.

    1. Elsa was not so keen on the dreads and was happy to exit without them quickly. Luke’s family is very proud of his choice. Wishing you and the Golden Girls a ‘wagnificent’ holiday.

          1. As soon as more blue than white and grey show up… It’s supposed to be quite warm today. 81 by this afternoon. I should be out shopping tiles but dang if I don’t feel like doing nothing!

              1. Yes, it can. I really do need to do just one thing. Just to say I did 😉 And a run doesn’t count – thought I am about to haul myself outta my chair and hit the pavement!
