Monday Musings ~ May 13, 2024

We hope all the moms out there had a lovely Mother’s Day and were sufficiently pampered by their families. Mother’s Day is thought to be that magic time when the threat of frost has passed and it’s safe to plant annuals. Around the Ranch, I now wait until after Mother’s Day, as snow has arrived in May a number of times over a number of past years in the Mile High city. This year on Mother’s Day, we were lucky with only rain all day (yay…color me happy). Lovely, soft rain which will boost awakening perennials and is so much better than the planned supplemental watering that was scheduled.

Today’s musing from the Carroll County Vet Clinic signage vault, reminded me of the quandary gardeners face all the time in the Rocky Mountain region.

Monday smile

We hope you and your plants are happy and this week holds loads of promise in the garden. Happy Monday.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Oh Monika! I had to laugh at the pun! And groan at the same time. 😂
I did have a nice Mother’s Day. 😊Hope you did too! Had chocolate covered strawberries . Yum!

Precisely. There’s no easy way to garden when climate change factors in and plays havoc with Mother nature. She isn’t known for playing fair either.

It was a good Mother’s Day weekend. And the fact that it rained was icing on the cake. The plants were very grateful after days and days of drying windy conditions.

  5. Our plants have been very happy with all the rain around here, but we are thinking maybe now they might need some sun – us too!!!

  6. BellaDharma an BellaSita Mum – On Georgian Bay..... – Welcome to THE Purrfect Pad. My name is Sherri-Ellen & my current Kitty Girl is BellaDharma a black part Siamese cat. I started blogging in August 2005 on Yahoo 360 with Mingflower my Bluepoint Siamese. Then transferred to Multiply...Mingflower went to Summerland & NYLABLUE my BluePoint Siamese/Burmese cross took over. When Multiply was closing a handful of our blogging friends recommended WordPress & we found a home here & made many new friends. Everyone followed the antics & struggles of NYLABLUE until her passing Nov. 22nd, 2014 to Summerland. A week later a little bouncing Burmese boy I met at a local adoption event joined me here! Dec. 9th, 2014. Purrince Siddhartha Henry came to live with me & regaled us with his journey towards 'Enlightenment'. He was a Burmese Buddhist with many health issues but he searched for meaning in his Life. After his lifelong struggle with Panleukopenia. Siddhartha Henry lost his battle & left for Pure Land August 28th, 2018. He was only 4 years & 1 month old. I've never totally gotten over the loss of my "Little Man". And this is where I get VERY serious. This Purrfect Pad blog is not all sunshine & roses. This blog is about REAL life with special needs cats who come into my life. We share our time together & we share the good, the bad & the ugly. This is a REAL blog. Yes we DO laugh & have fun & take Selfies! And we share each cat's struggles whether health issues or behavioural problems. And we share about my ongoing battle with 3 health conditions that can render me unable to walk plus having Cirrhosis of Liver & Seizures. We ask our friends & followers to respect that THE Purrfect Pad is anything but 'purrfect'. I am disabled & each of my cats' have had special needs. Everyone is welcome here as long as you are kind & respectful. If you have questions feel free to ask them. Sept. 6th, 2018 BellaDharma aka Baby Girl joined THE Purrfect Pad. We hope all of you will follow our life together as BellaDharma learns how to be a domesticated cat instead of a semi-feral one.... Love, Peace & Treets, Sherri-Ellen (BellaSita Mum) & BellaDharma & 'angels' Purrince Siddhartha Henry; Nylablue 'Sweet Feet' & Mingflower the Merciless & all my other cats who have shared my life with me. You are all loved & remembered...

While we love the look of Dahlias, I decided years ago I wasn’t going to plant and then dig them up in autumn to winter in garage. I’ll just have to be content with seeing them in gardens where the owner isn’t as lazy as me. Happy Monday-here’s hoping there aren’t too many falling walnuts this summer. 😉

LOVE that vet practice sign! Clever….. Also love the Spring-ish water color header. Gorgeous…..we have had lots (and that means LOTS) of rain and because of that everything is “giant-sized” including weeds. But the few annuals we planted are happy and the few perennials we already had are thriving. I’m not getting any other plants so if what I have “maintains” then I’ll be happy. I’d also be happy to know if you had a fab Mom’s Day!!

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy)

Potted plants, I don’t worry so much about… I was hoping to received my raised bed/boxes that I ordered (but now feel I might have been had) so I could at least plant cold-hardy plants like lettuce and green onions and radishes, and the like. Might have to give in and buy the Costco ones.

Mine was uneventful. My kids finally called me at 2:00 pm. So funny – 14 minutes apart they did.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen potted plants with blackened leaves from a late spring frost. Ditto with garden beds. Veggies like beans, peas, onions generally get sowed early but tomatoes, peppers are too tender to handle those chilly morning temps (it was 36F just a couple of days ago). My Costco had some pretty good looking veggies so I may join you. Otherwise, I’ll swing by a couple of small neighborhood greenhouses and hope for the best. I never plant seeds which I should do but with limited space, just can never seem to figure out a way to get ‘er done.

Exactly. The potted plants that are bought early, should be the hardy type!
I will be going to see just what they offer this year. Otherwise, I go to my local nursery. And I know what you mean. I’ve not planted seeds in forever.

Marigold seeds are fail proof at germinating. I often save some from the previous year and toss them where I want them to protect from pesky beasties around veggies-I always thought there wasn’t any point spending money buying marigolds and all aforementioned annuals. I’d prefer spending money on xeriscape perennials. Marigolds are perfect to plant next to new baby veggie starts because they smell so gross. 😉

Good for you! I’ve honestly never realised that they would grow in time to actually flower if I planted them from seed. Goes to show, eh?
It’s the only reason I plant marigolds – to protect my veggies coz you’re right. They STANK!
Speaking of Xeriscape…. I’m going to start a small section (bit by bit is the only way I can afford to go there!)

Good for you! It’s the way I had to go, section by section. The hardest part was getting rid of the damn grass-that took years! If you have a decently long enough growing season, you shouldn’t have any trouble with marigolds blooming. Good luck with your gardening plans.

I usually wait until after Mother’s Day to buy plants. The garden centers are swamped with people wanting to get planted early. Then they cover for every frost warning. In the end it doesn’t matter if you plant closer to Memorial Day as the cold nights stun the plants and they don’t grow fast. Always love those signs too!

I totally agree with you but I guess people’s impatient human nature takes over. If I buy early I harden them off gradually so the shock doesn’t kill them. Glad you enjoyed the sign-they are so clever.

Aww, you’re too kind, Helen. Thank you! We’ve had snow as late as Memorial Day (the last Monday in May). It’s always a quick storm but lots of people lose their minds when their annuals get frosted. Wishing you a terrific week.

  18. I’m glad you had a great Mother’s Day. Good for you. I had a great one too.

Love the vets sign. I laughed out loud.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. Scritches to the pups. ♥

Thanks, Sandee. Those Carroll Vet signs always make me giggle. Wishing you a fantastic Monday! Hugs and tail wags from me, Elsa & Wilson, the House Pony.

  19. Another lovely header, beautiful soft colours…..
In France, nothing was planted out until after the feasts of the Ice Saints…if I remember the last one of those being May 15th.
