Nature Friday ~ October 30, 2026

Wilson - HalloweenWelcome to this week’s edition of Nature Friday where we join the pups from Adventures of the LLB Gang. Be sure to click on the link to see what others have shared. Wilson here. I gave Mum the day off-she’s been extra busy lately so I told her I’d take care of this. Anywho…today is Halloween Eve. I sure hope no goblins or ghosts try to frighten me.

You may remember I mentioned we actually received some rain at the beginning of the week. Like a lot…close to .three fourths of an inches of wet stuff. Mum was over the moon about it…I on the other hand was far less pleased. But if it makes her happy, who am I to deny her. But I’m glad this week has since been dry but heard our weekend forecast is calling for snow for the mountains and most likely rain at the lower elevations. I just hope it isn’t too bad. Besides not being a favorite of mine, all that moisture will dramatically impact the remaining leaves that are just barely hanging on after months of heat turning most of them in our neighborhood into crunchy facsimiles of their usual selves. The slightest breeze makes them fall onto the ground. It all seems rather sad to see it go. But the weirdest part of the rain was we experienced a major fog that moved in when the rain stopped. Fog is not something we see very often so I had to ask myself, “yo mate, what is this thing called fog.” Fog is basically a cloud that resembles stratus clouds and is shaped by nearby bodies of water, topography, and wind conditions. So fog is simply a low-laying cloud that’s made of tiny water droplets that are suspended near the earth that reduces visibility.

But I needed to know more about fog. I mean, just how does this mysterious cloud form? Fog can form when the surrounding air cools to the temperature where the air becomes completely saturated with water vapor dew. Suffice to say fog is strange and often forms on clear, calm, cool nights when heat escapes the ground and chills the air right above the ground’s surface. I had gone out around 1:30 AM and it was barely sprinkling when we got up at 5:30 AM. Once the rain stopped, fog began to form. I don’t know if it was the rain or the fog that made everything smell amazing. Gosh…if I’d known how wonderful everything was going to smell I might not have been so reluctant to check it out. My walk was an olfactory bonanza,

Fog

It took a while before the fog burned off but it sure was interesting along the creek trail.

Fog

The fog was naturally the thickest along the creek and the air was heavy with moisture, almost like a mist. All I could think of was the famous Carl Sandburg poem, “Fog.” I know cats are very quiet on their feet and that poem compares the quiet arrival and departure of fog to a cat’s movements.

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Cats notwithstanding, the air was heavy with moisture and almost felt like a mist. Is there a difference between fog and mist? Both have suspended water droplets, but fog has limited horizontal visibility, whereas mist allows for greater visibility.
Fog
It was somewhat surreal but timely, considering this is Halloween week. And speaking of Halloween week, Mum was recently out running errands and decided to swing by our old neighborhood to see if the gigantic skeletons were displayed. She was pretty happy to see they were and chuckled at the red carpet movie premiere scene.
Halloween skellies
I’m hoping Mum doesn’t get any crazy ideas about dressing me up in some bizarre costume. Are you dressing up? Mum told me people dress up and go trick or treating. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink this costume thing if treats are involved. Whatever you do, we hope you have a lovely Halloween weekend and are able to get outside to see all the beauty nature shares with us this time of year.

  1. We saw lots of fog and mist in California, it used to roll in in the morning and roll out in the afternoon.

    1. It doesn’t happen that much here (with our low humidity) but with the nearby creek, it was really socked in. Kinda cool, kinda creepy. Have a spook-tacular Halloween!

  2. Glad you finally got rain. We had some spotty fog here this week too but not much. Happy Halloween! Enjoy your treats!

    1. Thanks. It was so very welcomed. I think we may get some more at the beginning of next week. That’s ok, we need it. As long as the headless horseman doesn’t haunt us, we’re hoping for a quiet Halloween. We hope yours is spooky fun.

  3. Rain is helpful sometimes. Hey Wilson, your fog is here just in time for Halloween! Have a fun weekend!!!

    1. It was pure heaven to finally receive some. Nature is quite mixed up we think. We had a bit of fog this morning too but nothing like those photos. Wishing you all a terrific Halloween weekend.

  4. We had pretty thick fog here the other morning when I was on my way to work. Visibility was next to nil until I got away from farmland and onto the main highway. Right now we’re experiencing wonderful temperatures, the kind I wish would stick around like . . . year round? Alas, before I know it I will be whining about how freaking cold it is.

And thank you for the Sandburg poem, love it.

Wilson doesn’t need a costume to get treats. He has that handsome mug and gobs of charm, it’s a slam dunk.

    Have a great weekend peeps!

    1. Thanks, Marc. The fog was so thick I half expected to see Ichabod Crane come riding through the trees. It caught us off guard since it’s a rare occurrence here and quite eerie I tell you! Wishing you a spooky good Halloween weekend.

      1. Ichabod Crane reference . . . on Halloween Eve. I really really love that! Dang, I should have read a horror novel this month!

        Not so uncommon here.

        Thanks mama

            1. When you’ve been drinking from a fire house for the past two years I’ve forgotten some of the stuff that was pulled. How in the world did we get here??

  5. Glad you got some nice rain, it will help with your drought. Still not many Halloween decorations around here and most of them are skeletons of all sizes. We prefer fun, cute decorations but with the state of people these days, skeletons are not really surprising. Have a nice weekend!

    1. You’re right about that. As if things weren’t scary enough. We hope you all have a wonderful Halloween weekend.

  6. You would look so cute in a costume. Be sure to visit us tomorrow. 8 of my 11 cats are being Dolly Parton for Halloween. XO

    1. Thanks. Oooh, we love Dolly and can’t wait to see your costumes. Happy Halloween 🎃

  7. Aww I love foggy mornings and your photographs are beautiful Monika! Wishing you and sweet Wilson a blessed weekend and safe Halloween too 🤗🧡🐾 xxx

  8. WOW Wilson, the foggy pictures are amazing and you look amazing too😻Extra Pawkisses for a Wonderful Weekend to the both of you👻🐾😽💞

    1. Thank you. We so rarely experience fog so it kinda piqued our interest. I was expecting Ichabod Crane to come rushing out of the trees! Have a lovely Halloween weekend.

  9. What a great post – love the foggy photos – we’ve had more than the usual foggy mornings here lately…..The leaves on the trees are falling like crazy here too – almost to the point you can barely see out there. Guess they hung on as long as they could and are tired of doing that. Anyway, it is Halloween Eve and we shall see if any trick or treaters make it up our long uphill driveway this year. Last year we had 2 or 3 kids – period. Oh well….more for us right? Right! Sending you and your family a big hug and a wish for a PEACEFUL Halloween!!

    Hugs, Teddy (and Mom)

    1. Since we rarely experience fog, it had Mum completely captivated. She say something about Ichabod Crane dashing out from the trees but I have no idea what she was talking about.

We have no clue how many (if any) kids show up in the new house but Mum has a small bag of candy, just in case. Let’s just hope it’s a quiet Halloween evening. Enjoy!

  10. Your fog photos are terrific, Monika. I’m always amazed by fog. We dont see it here very often. When we lived in the San Francisco bay area it was a constant companion. Happy Holloween to you and Wilson and a wish for a peaceful weekend.

    1. Thanks, John. It’s always so dry here, fog doesn’t have many opportunities to form. It was kinda cool and yet kinda eerie. We hope you enjoy a terrific weekend.

    1. Fog like that makes me think of all the Zombie movies out there. Eek! Have a Happy Halloween.

  11. We’ve gotten an unusual amount of morning fog around here lately, too. Of course, we’ve got the TN River not too far from us. And the mountains on the other side.

Xena: Mommy has the skunk costume sitting out. I think she’s gonna put it on Chia tomorrow. (I hope)

Chia: I saw that and I heard it used to belong to Angel Lexi, so Mom will probably put it on the schnauzer in the house. (I hope)

    1. Heh, heh…can’t wait to see who ends up wearing the ‘little stinker’ costume. Have a wonderful Halloween.

    1. It most definitely was. I half expected Icabod Crane to ride through the trees. LOL Enjoy a fun Halloween.

  12. It really is atmospheric and just a teeny bit creepy when you’re walking through the wooded wildlife habitat. Luckily we didn’t see anything that might be problematic. I think everyone slept in that morning, but us. LOL Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks. When I lived near that house up until last year, I marveled at the scenes they created. They have at least 3 dozen skellies of all sizes and they’d pose them in such clever ways. They really like Halloween and think they probably have a storage unit to store them all! 😉 Have a Happy Halloween.

    1. Yes, more like Sandberg (and Frost-my absolute favorite). Yes, Wilson was recently groomed but it’s a bit on the short side. Luckily it’ll grow. Have a lovely weekend, Jacqui.

Feel free to bark your thoughts...but please no growling.
