Monday Musings ~ June 3, 2024

Happy first Monday of June. The temperatures are rising and it clearly looks like Summer is ramping up. Temps will be in the 90’s in the Mile High and that means it’s even more important to think of the four-legged sect. Before we get to today’s smile, here’s a public service announcement every pet parent and/or animal lover should remember.

Summer temp

Fresh water will do more than just make your petunias happy; it is essential for you and your pet’s good health. So be sure to stay hydrated. And now for this week’s smile.

Happy Monday, peeps.

Live, love, bark 🐾

  1. We are quite cool here still. Great doggo advice 😀

Thanks Paul. We’ve had a number of days reaching 90ºF (32ºC) already and makes me wonder what July & August are going to be like. Still it’s always fascinating to see the dogs lying in a sunny spot snoozing away most comfortably.

  2. Lulu: “90 degrees?! Are we just skipping spring and going right to July these days?”
Java Bean: “Ayyy, it sounds nice to me!”
Lulu: “Oh sure, you’re a short-haired dog, but some of us have got thick furs you know!”

Sadly, you got it right. A high pressure front is sitting over us making everything too hot. Sigh. Wish there was some rain in sight, but alas, no relief that we can see. Time to go to the mountains for cooler temps!

  3. Oh my dogs that is the truth. We had 93 degrees for a high yesterday.
While running errands I could feel the heat rise off the black top when walking to my car.
We have 6 dogs on our cul-de-sac. I’ve noticed how smart they are. They walk on the grass.
    Hugs Cecilia

Grass and shade are our friends in hot temps. Then again so is AC. We tend to do our walks early in the day and hibernate thereafter. I can’t do hot temps myself and definitely won’t let the dogs either. Stay cool, we’re reaching 92F today so we’ll be close to the AC ducts. Hugs and tail wags.

That is a cartoon that truly shows that the sun IS hot…but then after cooling off they want to get warmed up again…and repeat! The pavements we use are in mostly shaded areas…but I won’t go walking if the temp is more than 78 or so…heat doesn’t play well with me…I go early am or later when the sun is much lower. Benji & Dalton like to lay on our sidewalk…but then they feel they are cooking and go lay on the grass under a tree. Just like in the cartoon!!

Like you, the heat and I are not buddies and I constantly seek shade and cooler places. We’re in the 90’sF for the rest of the week, something I was afraid of with the mild winter. Not looking forward to July and August, that’s for sure. I especially worry about Elsa outside as extreme temps tend to trigger seizures and being black…well that just makes it worse. We hope you are able to stay cool this week and don’t have to work too hard!

  5. thomasstigwikman – Dallas, Texas – My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.
    thomasstigwikman says:

Yes, watching out for hot pavement is important. In addition, we bring water to drink, and we also put water on the parts of the body that have short hair, like nose, belly, paws, etc. Pouring water on the long-haired parts is counterproductive because the hair forms layers, like a blanket and will eventually make the dog hotter.

      Tails Around the Ranch says:

You’re right, Thomas. Dog coats work to insulate their bodies in heat and cold but their poor little tootsies aren’t afforded that clever way to regulate their temperature. I’m always blown away how many people walk their dogs at mid-day. Shocking to me and I personally consider it animal abuse. Saw a guy recently who was running with his black dog! Good grief! He had taken his t-shirt off but the poor dog didn’t have that luxury. Grrrr. Thanks for your comment; hope you hjave a great week!

  6. Is that Lucy in that cartoon…it could be! I try to be cognizant of not walking the pups on hot surfaces, but had no idea the pavement got that hot when the air is those temps! Thanks!

Thanks, Frank. Yes, sidewalks and streets can heat up quite high especially with our intense sunlight. Humans just don’t seem to realize how hot it can get on sidewalks and in cars (even with the windows down-it’s still too hot to leave a pet while you shop).

  8. BellaDharma an BellaSita Mum – On Georgian Bay..... – Welcome to THE Purrfect Pad. My name is Sherri-Ellen & my current Kitty Girl is BellaDharma a black part Siamese cat. I started blogging in August 2005 on Yahoo 360 with Mingflower my Bluepoint Siamese. Then transferred to Multiply...Mingflower went to Summerland & NYLABLUE my BluePoint Siamese/Burmese cross took over. When Multiply was closing a handful of our blogging friends recommended WordPress & we found a home here & made many new friends. Everyone followed the antics & struggles of NYLABLUE until her passing Nov. 22nd, 2014 to Summerland. A week later a little bouncing Burmese boy I met at a local adoption event joined me here! Dec. 9th, 2014. Purrince Siddhartha Henry came to live with me & regaled us with his journey towards 'Enlightenment'. He was a Burmese Buddhist with many health issues but he searched for meaning in his Life. After his lifelong struggle with Panleukopenia. Siddhartha Henry lost his battle & left for Pure Land August 28th, 2018. He was only 4 years & 1 month old. I've never totally gotten over the loss of my "Little Man". And this is where I get VERY serious. This Purrfect Pad blog is not all sunshine & roses. This blog is about REAL life with special needs cats who come into my life. We share our time together & we share the good, the bad & the ugly. This is a REAL blog. Yes we DO laugh & have fun & take Selfies! And we share each cat's struggles whether health issues or behavioural problems. And we share about my ongoing battle with 3 health conditions that can render me unable to walk plus having Cirrhosis of Liver & Seizures. We ask our friends & followers to respect that THE Purrfect Pad is anything but 'purrfect'. I am disabled & each of my cats' have had special needs. Everyone is welcome here as long as you are kind & respectful. If you have questions feel free to ask them. Sept. 6th, 2018 BellaDharma aka Baby Girl joined THE Purrfect Pad. We hope all of you will follow our life together as BellaDharma learns how to be a domesticated cat instead of a semi-feral one.... Love, Peace & Treets, Sherri-Ellen (BellaSita Mum) & BellaDharma & 'angels' Purrince Siddhartha Henry; Nylablue 'Sweet Feet' & Mingflower the Merciless & all my other cats who have shared my life with me. You are all loved & remembered...

  9. I like many learned the hard way as a kid that pavement temperature > air temperature. Good lord those streets can get super hot! Indeed, as we all move into Summer we gotta take care of ourselves, our four-legged friends, and any wildlife that looks like it could use a helping hand as well. Hydration season is definitely here, whether dogs are super-busy or not. 🙂 Have a great Monday, Monika.

  13. John W. Howell – South Texas Gulf Coast – I have been working in business for over forty years and now have the time to work in special areas of interest. My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live in the Austin area with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.

Excellent advice, Monika. We always put our hand on the street If we can’t keep it there for a half a minute then it is too hot. I love that cartoon. It is so typical.

We just groomed Milo and cut his hair down to 1/4 in which is his summer length. He has stopped panting in the house.

  19. Lovely header….clearly the warm days are on their way with you.
The thugs love sunbathing in the mornings in the summer, but then start competing for the cool places in the house when it really heats up in the afternoons…so you can’t get near the fans and getting to the loo is an obstacle course. You’ll have seen the poster …’Everything in this house is contrived for the comfort and convenience of the dog’? So have they.

Thanks for noticing the new header. It’s hard not to factor their comfort in the house. I even bought my car in the slightly bigger than the model.
