Monday Musings ~ June 3, 2024

Happy first Monday of June. The temperatures are rising and it clearly looks like Summer is ramping up. Temps will be in the 90’s in the Mile High and that means it’s even more important to think of the four-legged sect. Before we get to today’s smile, here’s a public service announcement every pet parent and/or animal lover should remember.

Summer temp

Fresh water will do more than just make your petunias happy; it is essential for you and your pet’s good health. So be sure to stay hydrated. And now for this week’s smile.

Monday smile

Happy Monday, peeps.

    1. Thanks Paul. We’ve had a number of days reaching 90ºF (32ºC) already and makes me wonder what July & August are going to be like. Still it’s always fascinating to see the dogs lying in a sunny spot snoozing away most comfortably.

  1. Lulu: “90 degrees?! Are we just skipping spring and going right to July these days?”
Java Bean: “Ayyy, it sounds nice to me!”
Lulu: “Oh sure, you’re a short-haired dog, but some of us have got thick furs you know!”

    1. Sadly, you got it right. A high pressure front is sitting over us making everything too hot. Sigh. Wish there was some rain in sight, but alas, no relief that we can see. Time to go to the mountains for cooler temps!

  2. Oh my dogs that is the truth. We had 93 degrees for a high yesterday.
While running errands I could feel the heat rise off the black top when walking to my car.
We have 6 dogs on our cul-de-sac. I’ve noticed how smart they are. They walk on the grass.
    Hugs Cecilia

    1. Grass and shade are our friends in hot temps. Then again so is AC. We tend to do our walks early in the day and hibernate thereafter. I can’t do hot temps myself and definitely won’t let the dogs either. Stay cool, we’re reaching 92F today so we’ll be close to the AC ducts. Hugs and tail wags.

  3. That is a cartoon that truly shows that the sun IS hot…but then after cooling off they want to get warmed up again…and repeat! The pavements we use are in mostly shaded areas…but I won’t go walking if the temp is more than 78 or so…heat doesn’t play well with me…I go early am or later when the sun is much lower. Benji & Dalton like to lay on our sidewalk…but then they feel they are cooking and go lay on the grass under a tree. Just like in the cartoon!!

    1. Like you, the heat and I are not buddies and I constantly seek shade and cooler places. We’re in the 90’sF for the rest of the week, something I was afraid of with the mild winter. Not looking forward to July and August, that’s for sure. I especially worry about Elsa outside as extreme temps tend to trigger seizures and being black…well that just makes it worse. We hope you are able to stay cool this week and don’t have to work too hard!

  4. Yes, watching out for hot pavement is important. In addition, we bring water to drink, and we also put water on the parts of the body that have short hair, like nose, belly, paws, etc. Pouring water on the long-haired parts is counterproductive because the hair forms layers, like a blanket and will eventually make the dog hotter.

    1. You’re right, Thomas. Dog coats work to insulate their bodies in heat and cold but their poor little tootsies aren’t afforded that clever way to regulate their temperature. I’m always blown away how many people walk their dogs at mid-day. Shocking to me and I personally consider it animal abuse. Saw a guy recently who was running with his black dog! Good grief! He had taken his t-shirt off but the poor dog didn’t have that luxury. Grrrr. Thanks for your comment; hope you hjave a great week!

    1. You got that right. Hopefully with educating people we won’t have to remind people. Have a good week, Terry.

  5. Is that Lucy in that cartoon…it could be! I try to be cognizant of not walking the pups on hot surfaces, but had no idea the pavement got that hot when the air is those temps! Thanks!

    1. I know, right?! Pretty stunning numbers so we thought we’d share so everyone knew just how hot sidewalks can get. Hope you have a wonderful Monday! Stay cool. 😎

    1. Thanks, Frank. Yes, sidewalks and streets can heat up quite high especially with our intense sunlight. Humans just don’t seem to realize how hot it can get on sidewalks and in cars (even with the windows down-it’s still too hot to leave a pet while you shop).

  6. I like many learned the hard way as a kid that pavement temperature > air temperature. Good lord those streets can get super hot! Indeed, as we all move into Summer we gotta take care of ourselves, our four-legged friends, and any wildlife that looks like it could use a helping hand as well. Hydration season is definitely here, whether dogs are super-busy or not. 🙂 Have a great Monday, Monika.

    1. Thanks, Bruce. Right back atcha. Black asphalt is super deadly, you could actually blister delicate paws.

    1. Thanks, Cupcake. I’ve seen it around the Ranch too. Have a wagnificent Monday!

  7. OMG that’s me! I’m a dog! Had a hoody on this morning (it was 70 out) because so many of the stores crank their AC down low. Boogers up my metabolism.

    1. Hee, hee 🤣 In the evenings, I usually put a light weight blanket on my legs and feet when I watch TV because the AC has been all day. Here’s hoping you and your metabolism have a swell week.

  8. YES! Water is so important as well as skin protection when you’re a sun-lover. That adorable ‘toon applies to cats as well as dogs……Teddy does this very thing when he’s outside in the summer re: shade/sun indecision!

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Yes, sunscreen. I even have dog sunscreen for Wilson’s pink nose. I think most pets do that musical snooze in shady/sunny spots. Can’t say as I blame them! Happy Monday.

  9. Excellent advice, Monika. We always put our hand on the street If we can’t keep it there for a half a minute then it is too hot. I love that cartoon. It is so typical.

    1. I do too. I know if I can’t stand on the sidewalk, I know my pups can’t either and we go earlier or later. Here’s hoping your week is full of smiles. Happy Monday.

  10. Thanks for the reminder about hot ground. It’s heating up here at The Golden K. Looks like we’ve got a couple of 90 plus degree days this week. I guess we’ll be walking early. And yeah, a dog’s life…. If only. Have a great week at the Ranch; stay cool- figuratively as well as physically. 😎

    1. Thanks, Mike, you have a great week too. And try to stay cool! Ear rubs to the Golden Girls.

  11. I hear you. We were always careful with our Angel Little Bit.

Love the funny. So true. I laughed out loud.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays. Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches to the pups. ♥

    1. Thanks, Sandee appreciate the link hook up. I can’t tell you how many black dogs in particular that I’ve seen being walked at noon this past week. Ugh, I can’t believe people do that. Here’s hoping your week is totally pawsome!

  12. Milo and I are both too hot, too soon to be so hot. When we moved here there was about 3-4 months of heat, the last two years it doesn’t get cold til after Christmas and then not really cold except for a few random days.
We just groomed Milo and cut his hair down to 1/4 in which is his summer length. He has stopped panting in the house.

    1. It does seem hotter earlier this year; definitely not looking forward to July and August. Wilson is getting groomed this weekend and Miss Elsa is going to get her furs spiffed up to. Stay cool you guys and have a Happy Monday!

  13. I’m getting our standard poodle little boots this year to make walking on the concrete more comfortable. It just gets too hot here. We don’t take her for walk in the heat of the day, but the asphalt and concrete seem to retain a lot of heat.

    1. You’re right about that. Boots are a great invention-for summer heat and winter cold and ice. Have a terrific and Happy Monday!

  14. I was always so careful with Zeke on those hot days. We stuck to the cool grass on those days!
And I feel like that dog!

    1. Boy, can I relate. It’s that time of year when we’ll have to walk shortly after sunrise and delay breakfast for a good hour after we get back. It’s just too hot, too soon. Yikes! Happy Monday.

      1. Yeah, that too! We did not purposefully go out when the sun was at its hottest!
It’s scary how much hotter the temps are now.
        Thank you 🙂

  15. Lovely header….clearly the warm days are on their way with you.
The thugs love sunbathing in the mornings in the summer, but then start competing for the cool places in the house when it really heats up in the afternoons…so you can’t get near the fans and getting to the loo is an obstacle course. You’ll have seen the poster …’Everything in this house is contrived for the comfort and convenience of the dog’? So have they.

    1. Thanks for noticing the new header. It’s hard not to factor their comfort in the house. I even bought my car in the slightly bigger than the model. The salesperson thought I was crazy measuring the back seat and cargo area. He’s lucky I didn’t bring the House Pony in to test lay in it! LOL Happy Monday, Helen. Stay cool if possible and give the thugs a good ear/belly rub from me.

    1. One minute you’re wearing long sleeves, the next you can’t peel clothes off fast enough. 70’s would be ideal in my mind but Nature says, nah…let’s turn up the thermostat. Have a happy Monday!

  16. Yes, we need more of these public service announcements in summer to grow awareness.
I had to laugh at the cartoon… this is our Wren on our back deck in the morning!

    1. It slays me when I see them snoozing in the sun. Sam was a big-time sun snoozer. I dash from shady spot to shady spot like I’m Wile E. Coyote! Stay cool. Happy Monday, Eliza.

  17. The main difference between dogs and cats. Cats will lie in the sun and bake. Enjoy the beginning of summer and thanks for reminding people about the pavement.

    1. There are times when I see both Ranch Hands laying in a sunny spot-go figure. Guess those fur coats insulate both heat and cold. On the other hand, I will be searching out all the shady places for the next several months. Have a great Monday, Dan.
