Nature Friday ~ January 17, 2025

Welcome to this week’s Nature Friday post where we join those cute pups from Adventures of the LLB Gang. Hiya, Elsa here. It’s winter and any photos are fairly slim showcasing nature around the Mile High. The National Western Stock Show is going on but Mom said she’d rather set her hair on fire than deal with the traffic and wannabe cowboys than go to that event. Since she no longer works downtown, she didn’t even see the annual parade of Longhorn cattle up Seventeenth Street.

Elsa: {continuing} The big thing that we’ll be watching is the newsworthy story of a winter advisory in the form of an Arctic blast that’s slated to arrive later today (more on that below). Mom and Wilson will once again be spending the day at the hospital visiting folks. I heard he visited with a jillion people yesterday and made friends with even more. He tried to make ‘friends’ with a local hoodlum right before he left for his shift. Trust me, he didn’t get close but there was one tuckered out squirrel that collapsed from exhaustion on top of the wooden fence. His sides were heaving as he tried to catch his breath. Mom said he seemed pretty traumatized since he didn’t even run away when she went to see if he was ok. The House Pony was foiled {again} and life moved forward. Guess you had to be there to appreciate the drama.

Wilson’s friend

Wilson: Hey, I almost got him! He didn’t realize how speedy I am.

Elsa: Don’t kid yourself. No matter how {ahem} speedy you think you are, you’re always going to lose to that rodent. You should save your energy for more important endeavors, like Olympic style napping, like me. Trust me, that’s a much better use of your time with a greater chance for success.

Wilson: I just know I can get him at some point. I just know he’s going to make a mistake, slip off that top rail and fall on my side of the fence. And I’ll be there to ‘welcome’ him. {smiling with teeth exposed} Heh, heh.

Elsa: Well, I’m just saying, you’re wasting valuable time trying. I mean, wasn’t it Groucho Marx who said “paying alimony is like buying hay for a dead horse.”

Wilson: Perhaps, but because it’s almost MKL Day, I subscribe to the his quote, “It’s a job that’s never started that takes the longest to finish.” Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Elsa: Whatever, bozo.

Wilson: I think this is just something that you and I will have to agree to disagree about. Now about that Arctic blast you mentioned. The local weather channel said we can expect a “flash freeze.” What the bloody dog is a “flash freeze?” How cold is it going to get?

Graphic courtesy of Denver 7 channel

Elsa: Glad you asked though I’m not looking forward to those days with the minus symbol. One of the local meteorologists said a “flash freeze” is when there’s a rapid drop in temperatures from above freezing to below freezing in a really short period of time. She said Colorado rarely gets them. There’s a chance we’ll get some snow later today, even if it’s practically balmy as of this morning (32ºF/0ºC). That cold front will move in later this evening and any existing moisture on the ground like rain or melted snow will quickly freeze into ice. It’s gonna be nasty and brutally cold out there for the next few days so Mom is most grateful her calendar is clear and she won’t have to drive anywhere. It will likely be way too cold for us to do anything outside beyond super quick potty trips, so expect lots of sessions with the snuffle mats.

Wilson: Mmmmm, I can hardly wait. Well that’s it for us. Because this Arctic blast is going to hit a lot of the country and affect so many, we hope you all stay safe and warm. I strongly recommend you snuggle with a dog. Just saying.

Elsa: What he said. ⬆️ Stay warm and don’t let squirrels or Jack Frost put too much of a damper on your weekend. Hugs and tail wags. I’m going to get started on that nap now.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Wilson, we have to teach you how to climb…or better not…the squirrels are faster than we are, but they’re cute. We can understand that you needed a catch after all that working😸 Elsa thanks for the story about the cowboys and horned boys. They’re impurressive! Warm Pawkisses for a Happy Day to all of you🐾😽💞

It was -3F at 6:00 AM. Yikes, we just came from a quick potty break outside. No dallying around this morning…plus it’s still dark. We decided to go quickly and come in to go back to bed!

Our squirrels really yell at us. Clearly Wilson is totally offended by their HBO language.

      Your friends,

STAY WARM and COZY – that’s our advice!

We hope the same for you. Considering a certain Ninja decided to wake me up at 3:49 AM this morning to go outside (to eat snow no less before she decided “oh yeah, I need to potty in 6 inches of white stuff!), it wasn’t nearly as cold as I expected-but certainly cold enough. It’s 11F now (windchill 5F)…woohoo…a varitible heat wave. I expect tonight is going to be brutal. But as long as we have dog food in the house, we’re in good shape. 😉 I’m sure the grocery stores looked like mine fields full of people stocking up.

  7. Olympic style napping sounds like the kind of thing I could really get into. If I could nap, I mean. Glad to see you two kids are hunkering down for a cold winter’s weekend and more, that’s how to get through it. I don’t even want to think about what’s coming up, as it’s going to dip into the single digits next week and might even bottom out at zero. Very rare for these parts.

Let’s think warm thoughts, alright guys? It may not be much, but it’s what we go.

    Have a great weekend.

  10. Hello! So I wanted to ask, what is Wilson’s temperament like? Or the temperament of the breed in general? I was curious, because a friend at a dog show told me to keep the collies away from one that was standing nearby. She said they tended to be dog aggressive, (not people aggressive) and I had never heard that before. I guess it would depend on the line, and if they were bred/used as livestock guardians? Your boy looks so sweet and lovable, he just makes want to hug him.

      Tails Around the Ranch says:

Hi there. Wilson is a pretty sweet boy and my 5th OES. Like all breeds, there’s always one that gives the breed a black eye. If your friend suggested you should avoid that dog, I’d take their advice. You never know if they’re aggressive, resource guarding their owner (which is never good) and a breeder/owner should know better and get started on counter-conditioning. Sorry about that. It could just be the dog is overwhelmed by the dog show experience though I’ve not seen it in the sheepdogs that show around here. Stay warm this weekend!

  11. We are getting the same arctic blast here, but it is normal for us to have a lot of below zero days in the winter. Bailie doesn’t deal with the extreme cold that well this year but me and Olivia are fine with it and we will go out for our walks and do our usual chase and wrestle events in the yard. Coming in feels quite nice and sets us up for some good napping until we are ready to hit the cold again. Have a Grand weekend. We’ll also be celebrating Nelson’s birthday, but that is indoors.

It’s already starting to get miserable out there. Even though the temperature says it’s 40 (down from 49 just a couple of hours ago), the windchill feels like 26! Eek. Don’t think we’ll be going out much the new few days. Have a great barkday celebration and stay warm!

My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live in the Austin area with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.

A sweet post, Monika. Yeah we are headed into an Arctic blast too. Sunday through Tuesday we expect low in the 20s and highs only in the 30s. Will be tough on pipes etc but we are prepared. All the plants move in with us and the pups stay real close. I hope you stay warm and have a good weekend.

Thanks, John. What I would give for 20-30ºF days these next few days. The windchill factor is making the temps feel very extreme. Good thing Wilson likes being a ‘quilt.’ I’m going to need it! Stay warm-sending loads of good wishes the grid holds up for you guys. 🤞🏼

We’ll be cold in PA as well, highs in the teens, brrrrr. But not highs in the single digits, double brrrr! Our artic cold is said to only last three days….we shall see. I have lots of nice hot dinner meals, comfort-food style, planned.

Yeah, those single digits are gonna be brutal. The windchill is already dipping and making me pull out lots of layers. Wilson has agreed to be a ‘quilt’ and keep me warm too. Comfort food sounds divine. I think I may bake a nice veggie pot pie for dinner. Yum. Stay warm.

We have single digits and negative numbers overnight for a few days ahead. Dog walks are going to be soooo brief.

We shouldn’t complain, but after several days in the upper 40’s & 50’s, single digits will be pretty brutal. Stay warm and have a great weekend.
