Nature Friday ~ February 7, 2025

ElsaWell, will you lookie here…a quarter of the way through the month already. Goodness…time sure seems to be on fast forward. Elsa here with today’s edition of Nature Friday where we join those furry cuties from the Adventures of the LLB Gang. Be sure to click on the link to see what slices of nature others around Blogville have shared.

Elsa: Pardon me, I’m a bit under the weather this week. Mom took me to the vet on Monday where he stole some blood and got very personal checking me out. He told Mom that I developed a little case of canine bronchitis, but I’m doing “pretty well for an old gal.” The nerve, can you imagine?! My liver and phenobarb levels are all in the normalish ranges and I’m doing well on the epilepsy front (knock on wood). Mom was pleased and has been pampering me all this week. Yesterday I had her hand feed me. The medication I’m on for the bronchitis is fairly acidic and can bother dog’s appetites and tummies. I’m just milking the attention but Mom doesn’t seem to mind much. She just wants me back as her favorite Ninja.

Wilson: I wondered why Mum had been extra attentive to you. Sorry you’re under the weather and hope you’ll feel better soon. Wishing you loads of healing, sheepie energy, little one.

Elsa: Thanks, House Pony. I am doing better and not coughing nearly as much as I was 5 days ago. Mom talked with the vet a couple of days ago and they’re watching me closely so I’m sure I’ll be just fine once I’m through with that yucky tasting medication. I’ve been such a good girl taking my meds and not spitting anything out. I’ve got my paws crossed that I’ll be fine soon. Last year it was recovering from the femoral fracture, this year it’s bronchitis. Guess that old adage about getting old ain’t for sissies is true. She said the two of us are quite the pair. She’s still recovering from her broken sternum but it’s improving ever so slowly. At least she can sneeze or cough without too much pain, which is a big improvement from before.

Wilson: Mum’s been working hard with me about my squirrel obsession and I seem to be doing better (at least I think I’m doing better) and haven’t turned her into a kite for a while now. I’ll be glad when she’s fully recovered. So guess what we found this week? Actual signs that spring is planning on making an appearance in just 40 days! I’m very excited and actually managed to control my urge to water these baby tulips. Mum was so excited seeing them and the photo is a tad out of focus, so apologies for that.

Tulip sprouts

Elsa: I think she was just trying to keep you from showering them and hurried to snap the pic. They’re small little sprouts now but it’s a good sign that Spring is planning on arriving  soon. It’s been so drab and brown but now she’s got her eagle eyes peeled for other sightings of spring bulbs.

Wilson: She’s constantly scanning the ground and the skies for interesting and fascinating things to share. She’s always waxing on about how cool things look and is totally captivated by the natural world. Just check out this moon sighting earlier this week through some clouds. She was enthralled with the light ring highlighting its first quarter. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about but I’ll let her enjoy it.

Moon

Elsa: Hmm, look a bit eerie through those tree branches. Almost Halloween-ish.

Wilson: Right. Humans are a funny lot. They seem to view the world through focusing on holidays. I mean, just when we thought it was safe to walk the neighborhood without fear of those abominable inflatables, look what else we discovered.

Inflatables

Wilson: {continuing} I’m all in favor of expressions of love and all, but these blimey things just confuse me. And both Mum and I have no idea why there are so many bloody dinosaurs in these holiday inflatables. Does anyone know what that’s all about?

Elsa: I have a good idea but this is a GP rated blog so Mom would likely have a conniption fit if I said it out loud.

Elsa: {continuing} I mean when she took me to the vet’s the other day, we took a bit of a potty break and came across this house. I mean I’m all for a nice holiday decoration but sheesh people, Christmas is over. Put your holiday decor away. It’s not like you couldn’t remember where all the light strings are!

Garage door

Wilson: I’m waiting for them to break out singing some carols.

Elsa: You buffoon, nobody is singing any carols. It’s probably just a cling with woodland creatures printed on it. While it could be viewed as a winter scene, it smacks of Christmas to me. I say, “take it down, peeps-Christmas is over!” Good grief.

Wilson: Ahem…it’s a good thing you don’t have strong feelings about it, eh?

Elsa: {sheepishly contrite} Well, I get worked up over things like this when I’m not feeling 100%…yay that’s the ticket. Still, I can’t help but wonder what the bloody blue blazes is wrong with humans?

Wilson: I don’t think we have enough time or space to answer that question so let’s change the subject and find out what’s on tap for the weekend.

Elsa: Well I’m just relaxing and getting 100% well. The Puppy Bowl is this weekend and I know could all enjoy those cute little pupsters waiting to be adopted. Mom loves that annual broadcast, even more than the football extravaganza everyone yammers on about. One of the pups being featured (originally named Chrysanthemum), was from a litter of puppies a blogger who Mom follows, will be in the big event on the Animal Planet channel. Author Cara Achterberg fosters dogs and writes about her experiences in the Shenandoah Valley and this little pipsqueak from the Literary Litter will be featured (note: the producers changed her name to Maya). We’ll be rooting for her to score lots of touchdowns as well as finding a forever home. What a cutie.

Maya - Puppy Bowl

Wilson: You’re too right, she is a cutie and sure hope she’s adopted. Mum’s grateful for Cara’s work, tirelessly finding new homes for dogs by fostering them after they’ve been pulled from shelters across the south. Whatever you do, we hope you too can find signs of spring out there on your next outdoor walk. Have a great weekend everyone. Cheerio!

  1. Lulu: “Elsa! I was diagnosed with bronchitis last week too! It must be going around. Rumor has it Dada has been slipping a pill into my meals to make me feel better, and I guess it’s working, because I haven’t been coughing as much lately …”

    1. Oh sweet Lulu, we’re so sorry you caught it too. Our vet said it’s going around (at least here in Denver)-he saw 3 dogs before Elsa with the same symptoms. Ugh. Here’s hoping those pills do their thing and you’re fully recovered. Sending our best POTP wishes to you.

    ~~~head rubss~~~BellaDharma~~~ an {{{huggiess}}} BellaSita Mum
    1. That penalized pup was too precious. I absolutely love that event and watch it every year. The kitty halftime show is adorable, too. Elsa still has some congestion and wheezing but is better than last week. I hope the vet can figure out why it’s taking so long for her to get over it. Yikes, 4 feet?! Today we have snow flurries and VERY cold temps but no where near 4 ft. Heck we don’t even have 4 inches! And that’s ok by me. 😉 Stay warm.
  3. Chester and I watched the puppy bowl. he was indifferent but I enjoyed it. Sorry you’re feeling off Elsa. Keep taking your medicine like a good girl, you have to keep that house pony in line!
    1. Thank you, Martha. It was a nice way to escape so much of the ugliness lately. I’m exhausted by it all. Hopefully Elsa will continue to feel better. She’s hasn’t coughed as much this afternoon so I’m hopeful. Have a great week and give sweet Chester a nice ear rub from us.
  4. So sorry you and your mommy don’t feel well, Elsa. We hope you both feel better soon🙏We don’t know what to think about the dinosaurs either, so better we don’t think at all😹We love the picture of the moon too, the ring and the colors are so special and when one doesn’t know that it’s the moon, it could be a birdie on a branch bringing a message from above❤️Healing Pawkisses for the both of you and one for Wilson too🐾😽💞
    1. Thank you, we’re doing our best to feel better quickly. We’re heading toward the full moon and hope to catch it silhouetted against some tree branches. It’s always fascinating to see what nature offers us in the nighttime sky.
  5. Chia: Elsa, we have no idea what you wanted to say about those dinosaur inflatables… and even Mom isn’t laughing or blushing or anything.
    Mom: That is 100% the prettiest picture of a moon I have ever seen. I love to look at the sky: in the morning for the pretty colors, in during the day at the brilliant blue with cotton clouds, and in the early evening at the gorgeous sunsets.
    Xena: Yep, we’ll be crossing the TN river early in the morning on the way to work, and Mommy will be like, “Jeff! (that’ my dad) Look over here at the sky. Isn’t it beautiful?” I think he’s thinking the same thing as me…please keep looking where you’re going, BOL!
    1. Well, Chia…Mom convinced me that I shouldn’t say those kinds of things out loud. Besides I have a decent enough vocabulary and shouldn’t need to resort to HBO-ish words.
      So glad you liked that moon shot. It was a beautiful night and that ring…whoa Nellie! There’s nothing wrong with being enthralled with the natural world around us, whether it’s above us or right at our feet. And because it’s your Mom seeing amazing sights, just realize she’s multi-tasking and doing a great job at it. Happy weekend!
  6. Elsa, I’m sorry you’ve been under the weather; but I sure am glad you’re starting to feel better! I know how your mom worries about you – just like I always have about my furry kiddos.
    I found a couple of crocuses popping up earlier this week with the spring-like temps we’ve been having. I have a photo of the first one I saw; but the Z kids distracted me so I never got a pic of the other two.
    1. Thank you, Sue. We hope she continues to get better.
      It’s so striking to see little pops of green showing up in a sea of brown drab so it was sure exciting. It’ll be a few weeks before they actually bloom but the hope it leaves gardeners and those weary of winter is always welcome. Have a lovely weekend with your sweet fur babies.
  7. So glad that Elsa is feeling better….nothing like being under the weather for making one feel grumpy….
    1. Thanks, Helen. It’s always hard on a dog mom’s heart when their beloved pets are hurting or are sick. Luckily she’s gradually improving. Listening to her croupy cough has been heartbreaking. Hope you and the Thugs enjoy a lovely weekend.
  8. Hello from Australia. About those dinosaur inflatables… I have often asked why too! I like the tulips bud photo and hope that cutie “Elsa” is feeling better soon.
    1. Greetings from Down Under. Always delighted to see new visitors leave a kind comment. We thank you for that-Elsa is starting to not cough as much so I’m pleased about that.
      Those inflatables are not all that attractive but when they have dinosaurs front and center…well they’re just confusing as all get out and don’t make rational sense.
      Have a great weekend and thanks again for swinging by and leaving a lovely comment.
    1. Many thanks, Terry. The Puppy and Kitten Bowl always make us smile. Hope you have a terrific weekend watching it.
    1. Gasp…you’ve never seen the Puppy or Kitten Bowl? You’re missing a couple of fun filled hours of entertainment. Spring bulbs starting now is not unusual and this week we’ve had some very pleasant temps. Crocuses will start blooming in early March. They’re usually the first. Have a great weekend!
    1. Thanks, she seems to be improving the longer she’s on the meds. If you click on Animal Planet above, it should take you to the website. If not, let me know and I’ll send it separately.
  9. puppy bowl!!!! yip!
    Oh Elsa, the hooman docs say the same thing to older women. I’m so impressed at your handling of the meds… Milo fought back, holding pills coated in Peanut butter in his mouth til I looked away when he then spit them out soggy.
    The house pony is a good boy…
    1. We’re very excited about the Puppy Bowl. It’s always so much fun and we sure can use the smiles it will provide. Elsa has always been great about taking pills. I make pill pockets out of peanut butter and coconut flour and she takes them before each meal. She’s such a good girl. Hope you have a good weekend.
  10. So lovely to see the first tulips appear 🌷 Monika and we send lots of love and healing thoughts to you and Elsa and a gentle pat for Wilson too 💫💜💫 xxx
    1. It was quite the shock-but it’ll be awhile before they start blooming, especially if winter returns. The temps this week have been such a delight. Thanks for healing thoughts; we appreciate your kindness. Have a lovely weekend.
  11. So glad Elsa feels better. That stuff is not something to fool with. Love the tulips sticking up. So great about the puppy. She is so darned cute I’m sure a forever home is in the near future. I hope you all have a terrific weekend.
    1. She continues to surprise me. I swear she’s like a Jersey chick! LOL
      We sure hope little Maya finds the ‘pawfect’ home. I enjoyed watching her and her siblings thrive under Cara’s fostering. The all had those Flying Nun ears! LOL
  12. Hi gang……..tulips peeking out of the ground gives us HOPE – we are still recovering from the ice storm day before yesterday! Hope that you are feeling better dear Elsa AND House Pony don’t dare bite one of those weirdo inflatables because you’ll get a very BIG and unpleasant surprise!
    Huggies, Teddy
    1. Thanks for the feel better wishes. She’s getting better with each day. Those tulip sprouts just blew me away and yes….provided a big dose of hope. Yay! Have a great weekend.
    1. Thank you. Not too bad considering it was from my cell phone. But it was really gorgeous with that ring around it especially through the branches.
  13. I hope Elsa feels better real soon. With my coughing still from the Covid adventure, I can sympathize!! As for Christmas decorations still up….really??! What are they waiting for? Easter?
    1. You know I asked myself that same question. Sheesh, put ’em away for crying out loud. Usually folks keep their lights and decor up until the Stock Show ends. That was over two weeks ago!
      Thanks for the well wishes. Elsa seems to be slowly kicking this bug. She still wants to get her daily walks in so I know she’s not feeling too badly. Just feel for her with that croupy cough. Poor baby. Have a great weekend.
    1. Thanks. Elsa is grateful for all the online well wishes. Yes…puppies and of course the kitty halftime show…will make for a well deserved and lighthearted Sunday. Here’s to a fun filled weekend.
  14. What cutie pie is Maya!! We’re sure she’ll help her team win.
    POTP for you, Elsa, get well soon!
    Wilson, thanks for taking good care of her along with your Mom.
    Those tulips poking through!! I think maybe our southern exposed daffodils might be doing that too. Will have to check after all the ice we got here melts away. Today;s sun ought to help with that!
    Enjoy the rest of your day and have a nice weekend!
    1. Many thanks for the POTP wishes. We continue to hope for more signs of wellness in this sweet girl. Have a terrific weekend.
  15. We are counting the days until Spring gets here too!!
    xoxo,
    Rosy & Sunny
    PeeEss…We have our fingers crossed that Maya finds her furr-ever home and has a great time in the Puppy Bowl, we’ll be watching for her!
    1. It won’t be long now and before you know it, we’ll be complaining about hot temps and having to start weeding. LOL Enjoy the Puppy Bowl and have a great weekend.
      1. At this point in my quest for a grassy back yard – 10 steps backward after 6 forward – I will welcome ANYTHING green, including weeds. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m seriously considering buying crabgrass – at least IT will stand up to the Zs’ zoomies and wrestling matches.
        1. I hear that. Soon enough we’ll be whining about the heat and having to hoe and mow. 😉
  16. We are expecting a big snowstorm tomorrow night. And then another bad storm is supposed to hit us Monday night….so no signs of Spring here!
    This is the first year a collie pup will be on the Puppy Bowl, so we can’t wait to see Foxtrot!
    I’m glad you are doing better, canine bronchitis sounds scary. Sending you healing thoughts!
    1. Thank you. Oh no, sorry about your forecast. Hope it’s not as bad as they are predicting.
      Elsa is getting better with each day but thanks for the well wishes. I’d never heard a dog with a croupy cough before. Have a good weekend. We’ll be looking for the collie. We never miss seeing a Puppy Bowl 🐶
  17. elsa…st francis blessingz two ewe that ya get ta feelin way better soooper quik and wilson, me and de gurl iz crackin UP bout de “ singin carolz” line 🐟😺😺😺😺‼️💙💚
    1. Aww, thanks guys-that’s so sweet-we appreciate your good wishes for Elsa. Wilson would love for carolers…Elsa would just roll her eyes and probably grumble to pipe down with the racket. LOL Have a great weekend.
  18. that moon photo is fantabulous… but it is a sign that it is still cold outside, right? we stay under blankets and we have to wear ugly after christmas sweaters… happy weekend to da ranch..
    1. Thanks Weims. It’s chilly when it’s dark but this week has been pawsome during the day. Have a super weekend!
