Monday Musings ~ May 5, 2025

Happy Cinco de Mayo. What is this Cinco de Mayo celebration all about? Let’s take a look back at history to find out, shall we?

Cinco de Mayo marks the commemoration of the Mexican Army’s defeat over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, died months following the battle from an illness and his army was subsequently defeated in a second battle. The French occupied Mexico City and at the end of the American Civil War, the US began lending money and guns to the Mexican Liberals, pushing France and Mexican Conservatives to the edge of defeat.

In 1866 Napoleon announced the withdrawal of French troops from Mexico. Although France asked for American neutrality, the then American secretary of state, William H. Seward (he of Seward’s Folly fame who purchased the territory of Alaska for roughly $7.2 million in 1867-the equivalent to $129 million in 2023), told the French the withdrawal from Mexico should be unconditional.

More popular in the United States than in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture somewhat ironic in today’s political climate. Wilson asks if you know where your blender is for today’s smile.

Happy Monday and Happy Cinco de Mayo. Make it a great week!

  1. You look so sweet with your hat, Wilson. Now let’s get us a mix for this special day🌮Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to you and your mommy too🐾😽💞

    1. Thanks, Stippie, Peachy and Granny. Our Mum loves to put hats on me. She can be so weird about it. 😆
      Your fur-iend,
      Wilson 🐾

    1. Mariachi Man…bwahahahaha! Good one, Marc. We had a good day at the hospital following a meeting. I love it when Wilson’s innocence and cute expressions are able to bring joy and happiness to the folks he encounters.

    1. Thank you, Martha. He’s such a good sport with all the photo sessions wearing hats. Hope you had a lovely Cinco de Mayo!

    1. Perhaps, but if it meant she’d be with her, I know Mum would let her chew to her heart’s content. She’s misses her very much too. ❤️‍🩹

    1. Thanks. And I’d say, YES to the date! Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday.
      Your friend,
      Wilson 🐾

    1. Many thanks, Ellen. Such high praise from the queen of pets wearing hats! Appreciate it. Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday.

  2. Wilson looks ready to PAR-TAY…….I’m afraid my Cinco de Mayo partying days are long gone but then again, sometimes you don’t need a special day/occasion to have a nice cold (and potent) drink!

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Thanks. That boy knows just how to ‘paw-tah.’ Hope it’s been a good Cinco de Mayo Monday.

  3. Happy Cinco de Mayo! You look good in that colorful sombrero, Wilson!
I have three blenders!! A big one, a small one and an immersion one…wonder what will we make with one or all of those today? Likely nothing…we don’t eat/drink a lot of these types of foods and drinks…sigh…though we do like them, they just don’t fit in well with our eating habits!

    1. Thanks. 3 blenders? In that case when does Happy Hour begin? 🤣 Have a super Monday.

    1. Well Taco Tuesday works to keep the celebration going. 😉 Happy Monday.

  4. We went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant yesterday, cause we can’t today (and wouldn’t want to fight the crowds anyhow). Had their buffet that came with 2 glasses of mismosa, so we didn’t get a margarita. They must have used Andres champaign, it was horrible. So Jeff drank his 2 glasses plus both of mine and I drove home. 🤣

    1. Sorry the drink weren’t up to snuff. You could enjoy a nice margarita tonight on the patio. Just saying. 😆 Happy Monday.

    1. Thanks, John. Nothing worse than wanting a margarita and not remembering where the blender is! Hope you have a wonderful Monday. Cheers.

    1. Thanks for the compliment and the condolences. I stand by my belief the Av’s were the best 40 minute team in the NHL. Too bad, games last 60 minutes. Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday!

    1. Thank you; it surprisingly stayed on for several shots. He’s such a good sport posing with hats and many have straps to keep them well anchored. Happy Cinco de Mayo, Monday.

  5. Wilson is most handsome. He’s ready for the celebration.

Love the funny. I do know where my blender is.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. A hug to you and scritches to Wilson. ♥

    1. Thanks, Sandee. Yeah, we’re glad yet another blender is ready to celebrate today. And thanks for the link hook up-you’re always so kind. Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday!

  6. Happy Cinco De Mayo and Wilson you look absolutely handsome! LOL! Love it! I hope your Mom wore a hat as well! 🙂 Happy Monday! Have a wonderful day! <3

    1. Thanks, Carolyn. My Mum is a little bit like the Wizard of Oz…always behind the scenes. 😉 Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday.

    1. But just think of the health benefits. Sounds like a mock margarita is in order for you. Happy Cinco de Mayo, Jacqui!

    1. Hee, hee…luckily we’ve had both long before those stupid tariffs were enacted. But doggone it, I just realized we’re fresh outa margarita mix! Sigh. Happy Cinco de Mayo, Ann and June.

    1. Thanks and to you as well. Sorry it was not a lucky day. I’m sure the government would have found another way to make it not so lucky for France (especially these days). You can still enjoy a margarita though-we won’t tell. Happy Cinco de Mayo Monday.

  7. Looking pretty chill, Wilson. I won’t be using my blender, but I’ll have a Model later today and think good thoughts about Mexico.

    1. Thanks Dan. A cold Modelo is another great way to celebrate. Hope your Monday is terrific.

    1. Thanks…he’s a good sport about wearing hats. Thank goodness. Have a super Monday.

    1. Woohoo. We love a good fiesta and even a nice little siesta afterwards. 😆 Happy Monday!
