Monday Musings ~ November 3, 2025

Pumpkins - LandfillHappy first Monday of November! We hope you survived the onslaught of ghosts and goblins and have properly disposed of the half chewed up pumpkins. Did you know that throwing pumpkins in landfills creates loads of methane which contributes to climate change. Best to compost them for next year’s flower beds.

Have you ever roasted the seeds from your porch Jack-o-lantern? It’s a slimey exercise but boy howdy, they sure are tasty snacks.

We survived the neighborhood kids doorbell ringing by placing our treats on a small table and inviting them to take a treat without sending Wilson into protective mode by sending him into an extreme eardrum-splitting alarm. He and I rested calmly and by 10 pm, all but about 6 pieces of Hershey nuggets had been taken and were promptly saved for Saturday’s lunch snack with my granddaughter’s house. I’d have to rate this year’s holiday a resounding success even if I didn’t get to see all the adorable costumes for the little ones coming to the door.

Today is the first weekday back on standard time. If you were like some people (me), you spent a bit of time yesterday trying to remember how to reset the car clock or re-adjusting clocks that don’t automatically change around the house. After decades of changing clocks, you’d think I’d have changing the dining room, a pendulum clock, the art studio, microwave and stove clocks down pat for the manual switch. You’d be wrong. This is why I save all instruction manuals for appliances and have even tabbed the owner’s manual in my car to the page on how to manually change the clock since thee is no “how to change your clock page in the table of contents (WTH Mazda?). Thank god there are no VCR’s with their flashing blue clocks these days. Changing that clock after a power outage and the twice a year time adjustment practically took an act of god. Goodbye and good riddance to that old fashioned technology. The alarm clock in my bedroom automatically changes but it’s old enough that it’s always off for a week or so. Good thing I don’t have to rely on it to get up in time to leave for work. I just wait it out until the switches back (or forward) to the ‘correct’ time.

Which leads me to today’s smile. I couldn’t help but think how many similar scenes to this one were happening all over the country. For his own reaction, Wilson hopped up on my bed when I got up and curled up in the covers until he realized my getting up meant he could go outside and possible scare round up a bunny in the low light like he did a couple of mornings ago. Nothing like chasing a full speed Sherman tank down the alley in low light conditions wearing flip-flop slippers. Imagine his disappointment when he realized it was a rabbit and not the bane of his existence-a squirrel.

We hope today’s reunion with the weekday world was easy enough, the yawns were kept to a minimum and you didn’t have to overdose on caffeine. Have a wonderful Monday.

Monday Musings ~ October 27, 2025

It may be Halloween week but we’re adding a culinary twist to celebrate. So go ahead and pull up a chair and enjoy a Halloween Venti on us. Let’s bring out the smiles.

We hope you had a great autumn weekend and are now ready to start out the week in ‘spook-tacular’ fashion. Just know we’re not here to ‘hide and shriek.’ Feel free to leave the corniest Halloween pun you like. Hope there are smiles galore today and throughout the week with plenty of plates of Boo-rittos for snacks.

But please don’t skimp on the hops, eh?

Monday Musings ~ October 20, 2025

Happy Monday, peeps. We figured it’s time for some Halloween humor since it’s coming up. But rest assured, we pledge to NOT share any of the garrish inflatables that seem to have taken over the ‘Hood. I just can’t. Besides, they aren’t that funny.

Have a great Monday but we hope things don’t go too quickly for you.

Monday Musings ~ October 13, 2025

Happy Monday. Despite the recent executive order to the contrary, today is Indigenous People’s Day in the U. S. (aka Columbus Day). In his order, the president praised the 15th-century explorer as “the original American hero” and “a giant of Western civilization” which seems ironic in this day and age, given that Columbus was the first immigrant to reach the Americas.

But because it’s Monday, we need to start the week out with a smile. Today that means we’re joining the live coverage with ‘Louie’ as he covers a very important news story.

One thing I’ve learned about Wilson, is that he apparently can count and has seemingly mastered fractions as well. All of which means that dividing treats is forbidden around the Ranch. I no longer even try to pull any treat division like that here and have assured the House Pony there will be no ‘crime scenes’ around the Ranch about that.

We hope the news in your neck of the woods involves only whole portions. Make it a pawsome Monday and an even better week.

Monday Musings ~ October 6, 2025

Over the weekend I transported a relinquished sheepdog to one of our fosters. He’s a sweet boy and was placed with a seasoned sheepdog owner who’ll help him get over his shyness.

While I was gone, it looks like the spirit of Elsa showed up to keep Wilson company. Even as an angel she shares her presence and legacy. This was new behavior from Wilson and clearly was a paw on my shoulder from my beloved Ninja who wanted me to know she’s thinking of us.

Which leads me to today’s smile which perfectly sums it up. May you  savor the theft of your heart. Happy Monday, friends.

Monday Musings ~ September 29, 2025

Welcome to the last Monday of September. We hope you had a ‘pawsitively’ wonderful weekend. We actually managed to combine rescue work with some fun along with a bit of leaf peeping and are looking forward to sharing some scenes on Nature Friday.

But it’s a new week which means we need to start the week out with a smile. Let’s revisit the El Arroyo Restaurant again for one of those life questions the lactose intolerant are wanting to know. What do you think?

Have a happy Monday and a swell week. We’re looking forward to welcoming October…our favorite color.

Monday Musings ~ September 22, 2025

Happy Monday, peeps. As you probably know we’ve been counting down the days until the official arrival of autumn since July as it has been one heck of a hot summer.  Well it’s here…so color us happy! If you need some perspective, there are 100 days left in 2025.

Because it’s hard for us to resist a good pun, today’s autumn smile featuring the Floof (from last year-leaves have been slow to change yet here) is for you. Do you recall that old Maybelline commercial from a few years ago: maybe he’s born with it, maybe it’s Maple leaves. By his expression, apparently the tongue sticking out is Wilson’s way to groan.

Maybe he’s born with it, maybe it’s Maple leaves.

Today is also Rosh Hashanah and we send our best New Year wishes to all who celebrate.

We hope you have a fabulous Monday and an even better week. Enjoy!

Monday Musings ~ September 15, 2025

I’ve been thinking this whole tip thing has gotten a bit out of hand these days. Apparently it’s now trying to tap into the pet world, if today’s smile is any indication. As you can imagine, Wilson is 100% on board as he gladly accepts his tips in treats or ear rubs. This week he’s set to receive lots of tips and bonuses since we’re headed to Lutheran to visit patients, staff and visitors. And there will be plenty of ‘tips’ to get him through his grooming session but it’s probably a good idea to not mention the part where water is involved.

We hope you have a pawsome Monday and an even better week-minus the water.

Labor Day Monday ~ 2025

Time to fire up the old BBQ because today is Labor Day in the US and its territories where we celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of workers. Always celebrated on the first Monday of September, today we honor labor and union movements (if you work 40 hours or less a week, you can thank unions for that) and the role all workers have made to the strength and well-being of the nation. For many of us, we may have the day off from work and the first holiday of the new school year. Many consider Labor Day as the unofficial last weekend of summer with backyard get-togethers. Wilson is hoping someone will pass the chips or better, a hot dog.

A brief history of Labor Day shows that as trade and labor movements began to grow, calls for a day commemorating workers’ contributions were proposed. Colorado was one of the first five states to enact legislation recognizing Labor Day, with Oregon being first to officially make it a public holiday back in 1887. Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894. Our Canadian friends likewise celebrate “Labour Day” on the first Monday in September.

Historically speaking, it wasn’t all roses and candy to get where we are today. Following the deaths of workers at the Pullman Strike of 1894, Congress unanimously approved legislation making Labor Day a national holiday and it was signed into law by Grover Cleveland shortly after the end of the strike.

We had our family reunion with all 5 siblings and scores of grandkids over the weekend gathering to celebrate my Dad’s 95th birthday. Tacos were a-plenty along with Cerveza and Margaritas, appetizers as well as a customary birthday cake. It was so much fun seeing nephews, nieces, cousins and family friends that I don’t normally get to see. The weather was perfect with mild temps-you couldn’t have asked for a better day capped off by a lovely shower and beautiful rainbow on the way home.

Even though it’s a holiday, it’s still a Monday, which means we’re going to start out the day with a shared chuckle. Let’s hear it for pigeons!

We hope your holiday weekend was great and today keeps the streak alive. Happy Labor Day and Happy 95th to my Dad.

Good morning and welcome to Day 237 of the year. There are 128 days left in 2025. Have a great Monday and a wonderful week filled with loads of smiles. We hope the wheels don’t fall off your week and you don’t have to look to  new parts.
