Our favorite day is here so that means, we’re joining our good friends and hosts, Rosy and her brothers from LLB in Our Backyard. Other than the arrival of the weekend, we love Fridays because wine arrives too. After a stressful week, a lovely glass of wine at the end of the day sure hits the spot, don’t you think?
We know wine comes from grapes which are vines so we thought we’d highlight another vine plant nature has been showing off this month in spite of pizza-oven heat. Our favorite vine in the garden (other than the grape) is Clematis.
With nearly 300 species within the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae, one of the most popular of the hybrids in the Clematis family is C. Jackmanii. It has been a garden standby since 1862. This cultivar was named after 19th century British nurseyman, George Jackman. As a hybrid, “Jackman” comes from the marriage of C. Lanuginosa and C. Viticella. Clematis can be woody and deciduous; there are also herbaceous and evergreen varieties as well.
Jackman blooms in our Zone 5 garden in July and like many Clematis needs support. It likes well drained soil and shallow rooted plants around the base provide the necessary shade to cool the roots. It does not like ‘wet feet’ and seems to do well in a xeriscape garden. Jackman has large (5 inches across) blooms, which come in a dark purple-violet color.
Here’s one last look at Jackman with best wishes for a terrific weekend. We hope you are able to enjoy a bit of the magic that Mother Nature provides.
Live, love, bark! 🐾
We love our clematis! It is prolific in the late spring/early summer, but it continues to throw out a bloom here and there all summer long. It was new to me not that long ago when I planted one at our old house, but I was thrilled to find a much healthier bush here at our new house!
They are sooo pretty. The heat is taking the steam out of blooming right now but if it cools a bit we might get another bloom or two.
So beautifuls! It reminds me of Ma’s passionflower vines! They are the kerazist flowers! I’m gonna tell Ma we needs this one too. Oh, and a margarita sounds FABulous after a long hour of barkin’ at tree rats! Oh, you said WEEK ~ oh, that too…heheheee Ma said a glass sounds good, butts she tends to skip the alcohol cause it can trigger her my-grains. Some day she’ll risk it! BOL
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Your mum has passion flower? OOOOH…so jealous! Sorry you mum can’t enjoy a glass of wine
because of migraines, totally understand. They are no fun. at. all. Hug and ear rubs.
We love the color of our clematis
hugs
Mabel & Hilda
Hope you’ll share images of them. Love seeing all the different colors from this prolific plant.
Beautufiul. We had an outstanding colorful Clematis at our previous home.
We love your Jackman Clematis, I don’t know if we have one too, but we sure have one who looks like him 😀 😸Pawkisses for a Happy Caturday to all of you🐾😽💞
We like the idea of having a Dutch cousin. 😊
We loved seeing your Clematis, ours blooms in April or May and we are so thankful it survived and comes back year after year. Mom bought it on clearance and it was half dead but with some tender loving care it managed to live and thrive with her neglecting it after the first year. (sigh) at least she remembers where it is at so she doesn’t pull it up when she is weeding.
Sadly there is a whole graveyard of clematis over the years but I think I’ve finally figured out a few tricks to keep it loving lovely. Kudos to your mum for ‘rescuing’ a clearance planting!
I wish I had even 1% of the knowledge you have about plants!
Heh, heh…I only wish I knew more about them. Some of the facts I post are the result from referring to the massive collection of plant books-it all doesn’t come from the top of my head.
Such beauties!!! I find wild clematis in our forest but it’s nowhere near as beautiful as yours!
Ooh, I’d LOVE to come across a wild Clematis! Bet they’re fabulous.
Wow! Those are amazing photos of stunning flowers! Such beauty! 😀
Yes, Mom also loves to relax with a glass of wine or sherry. We also want to wish you all a wonderful weekend. Lots of wet kisses and hugs to you all. 😀 😘😘😘💕💕💕
We’re all for relaxation with a lovely glass from the vine. Happy weekend, Rambo!
Howl or bark? What about SqUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKING?
Whatever cranks your swing, Kismet.
Glorious colour! My sister used to have a couple of them… Hmmm… something I shall consider planting next year. This year is all about a whole lotta just settling in.
And we were discussing Vindredi (Winerday for Friday as, in French, vendredi is Friday and changing the e to i is just what we do…) Anyway, My boss said that yesterday was my vindredi and I said every day was to which we all nodded our heads…
I love adding the vertical element Clematis provides and the shade on the pergola. Yes, you definitely need to settle and sort things out this season. A toast to you for the weekend 🍷
That first photo is just beautiful – clematis is so pretty. It looks really nice when it adorns a mailbox at the end of the driveway.
Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber
It certainly is the icing on the cake.
It’s a beautiful flower. Clematis grow well in our zone 4 garden too.
HaPpY Weekend!
Happy weekend to you as well!
We have had a bit of rain these last few days. My word, how the weeds have enjoyed it!! Love your flowers as always – and always something different.
Thanks. Around here rain is simply weed fertilizer since we get so little of it to matter to the garden plants. Happy weekend!
Gorgeous flowers! A glass of wine sounds perfect right now. But I don’t think I have any in the house. ☹️
Wine is a lot like dog food-they’re the most important things in the cupboard! ☺️
Very pretty butt Stanley is wondering what it tastes like? Does it taste like chicken?
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
Tell Stanley it’s the ‘other’ white meat. 🤣
Grapes???? OMD…. I can’t eat dat but it is a really pretty grape Clematis. BOL.
Wags,
Ranger
My two favorite food groups–wine and chocolate.
Yup, they’re my favorites too 😋
We love our clematis too. It is full of flowers right now.
One of summer’s prettiest!
We bet they’re just fabulous too!
Lovely flowers; happy Fur-iday!
Thanks, Benji. Happy Fur-day to you as well.
WOOFFF!
Clematis are one of my favorite flowers!
They are always so pretty and come in such beautiful colors.

🎨Ha!
A favorite for sure!
Always a great addition to the garden.
we love clematis. It grows well here in Scotland.
Happy Nature Friday!
I can only imagine. The two clematis planted in my garden seem to struggle with a lack of moisture since I’m rather stingy with supplemental waterings. This year in particular it has looked quite raggedy and think that whining I hear when I’m out and about the garden must be its reaction to the harsh conditions.
Used to have Clematus in Indiana. I think it is too hot here. Wine is one of my food groups.
Wine occupies a nice segment on my food pyramid too. 😂
🍷 Happy weekend
Cheers!
How pretty!
Thanks-we love ours.
I drink wine for medicinal purposes😉 ! Have a great weekend!!
🤣 I like your medicine!
Beautiful. I have a blue one that is stunning. Big bloom in June with follow-up flowers all season.
With enough moisture, we can experience some after the big bloom too. 🌺
Beautiful and yes a nice glass of wine at the end of the week is a most wonderful thing.
Have a fabulous day and weekend. ♥
It’s a great way to start out the weekend. Cheers! 🍷
That color! It’s as if nature decided to wear a raspberry beret.
There are such gorgeous shades but the dark purple is probably my favorite. Maybe because it reminds me of wine. LOL Salud 🍷
Yes . . it’s a luscious tall glass is what it is! I see (taste) it now. 🙂
😋
😋🍷😋
Now we’re talking! Though I’d add more of these🍷🍷🍷
🍷🍷🍷 is the perfect number! How’d ya know? 😉
Everything is better in 3’s. LOL
Word up!
clematis is a beautiful plant… and it is so old and still in fashion ;O)
It truly is beautiful. I had no idea it had been around that long till I read up on it. Jackman is quite handsome, both as a plant and as an actor. Just saying.
The Jackman looks great….Love your trellis too!
I’ve heard mixed reviews about sucessfully growing Clematis here in zone 9 but I really want to try it!
Good luck; it could be a beautiful addition to the garden.
I agree with you on the wine. But does it have to be a Friday for that??!!
Certainly not, but those who work probably have that kind of restriction. Thank goodness we’re not in that group! 🍷
we had an amazing clematis bush in MD. I’d like to put one here somewhere… are you going to paint this? You’d do a great job with that image.
Never thought about painting this. Something to consider.
