Monday Musings ~ January 4, 2021

We hope you had a lovely New Year’s celebration. Ours was quiet…well until around midnight when some knuckle-dragging neighbors began shooting off fireworks. For a few minutes, it was nerve-wracking for a couple of pups. Fireworks always set my jaw and make me grumble but we finally were able to get to sleep soon thereafter. Thank goodness for the BBC which broadcasts late at night on  public radio. Apart from getting world-wide news without the same cable TV newscaster droning on about that same ‘breaking news’ story that had been highlighted for the previous six hours, it provided some pleasant white noise for the dogs. Hard to believe they have next to no interest in soccer scores or how the 4-1/2 year long divorce known as BREXIT ended up.  It only took about 15 minutes before canine snores were competing with news from Britain, the rest of the world and fireworks.

Unlike my usual MO, this post was penned before Monday. Usually they’re done the morning they get published but knowing the laptop will be going in for a tune up later this week, it was actually written in advance. I even hope to get a couple in the hopper to tie us over. Perhaps this proactivity might set the stage for that age-old resolution of ‘being better organized.’ Yeah, probably not.

So let’s start out the new year with a nice big smile, shall we?

Smiles

So how was your New Year’s celebration? Here’s hoping the ‘first week’ sets the tone for a better year. Hope springs eternal.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Well, our high hopes for a better new year got dashed kind of quickly, didn’t they? I am still hoping for better days ahead, once we get past that certain point, and at least things are quiet here on the home front. We had a few boomers on New Year’s eve as well, but we were amazed that they didn’t seem to phase Luke this time. Luckily they didn’t last too long either.
Hope your laptop comes through its tune-up well! 🙂

    1. They sure did, Jan. Elsa had a small seizure over the weekend to top off everything else that happened last week. Ugh.

  2. Oh my dog, not finding something could put huMom over the edge😉BOL! I do hope you find it before next year. Bol Bol.
If it makes you feel any better huMom forgot to buy a new calendar; she said she might just have to make her own; hopefully before the end of the year. Bol Bol💜nose nudges💜

    1. As losses go this isn’t the end of the world. Still it was a calendar of Old English Sheepdogs that the rescue puts together as a major fundraiser. I hadn’t even opened it to see any of the rescue dogs. 😬

  3. This was the rare year where NYE lined up with my weekend. I’d just as soon be at Mecca that night where I’m far away from fireworks and any stray bullets that may return to earth…

  4. Dog gone those human fools & their fireworks; we get even bigger fools shooting guns off. It makes huMom 😡🤯
BOL! HuMom has been barking about cleaning up last years files, notes, paperwork & setting up new strategies for a more pawsitive structure for 2021. We’re 6 days into to it; she’s managed to stay on top so far. Paws crossed🐾💜🐾

    1. Good for your mum, Olivia. I did some of that over the weekend in the hopes I’d find the expensive calendar I got for the year. Alas, have cleaned files but no calendar. Boohoo. Not the best way to start the year but if that’s the worst thing that happens this year, I’ll take it. Tell your mum to keep up the good work!

    1. The older I get confirms the truth to it! Wishing you a healthy and prosperous New Year 🎉🎊🍾🎆🎈

  5. So very glad there were no fireworks in my ‘hood.
Honestly, last year we were in Old Montreal, on the Ferris wheel at midnight – not quite as cool as the year before where watched the fireworks from atop said wheel. This time we were kicked off after the first minute or so. I don’t mind fireworks in a controlled environment such as this. But the neighbourhood ones? They annoy me.

A very Happy New Year to you and yours! xoxo

    1. Professional shows are one thing but when houses are built closely to one another, it’s not only terrifying for some pets and peeps, it can be downright dangerous especially in tinder dry areas.

      1. I wholeheartedly agree. I’m glad no one in my area is into that. Actually, I may be wrong, but it’s not a thing here.

        1. It doesn’t sound like a big Canadian thing. Which to my way of thinking seems quite good.

            1. You’re lucky they’re mostly in just one province. Sadly they are spread out everywhere here.

  6. HAPPY NEW YEAR……we had one neighborhood knuckle-dragger here – BUT he/she/it only set off about three SUPER NOISY fireworks and the others were “pop-pop-pops” if quieter proportion. Much better than in previous years. I went right back to sleep. I am hopeful for the new year to be “better” (whatever that means) but I’m not sure WHEN the “better” will be here. One thing I know for sure, I was happy to say goodbye to 2020………I’m optimistic about this year……!!!! Sending you a hug for 2021.

    Love, Pam

    1. You hate to wish bad on those folks but I can’t help but think a couple of flat tires (at the same time!) might be appropriate karma for them. 😇

    1. Ooh, if only it was raining (or better, a nice dump of white stuff). 😇 Have a great first week in 2021!

  7. Verra quiet here. John was working, Andrew was on call, so just me, Annabell and Benji to make sure there were no obstructions to hinder the departure of 2020. I had a couple of drams of 22 Year Old Single Malt and sat up for a while. All was quiet as 2021 made its way in and Benji and I shared potato chips ( crisps) and watched an old Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Still having problems with posts.

    1. Glad you had a lovely holiday. Nice and quiet sounds perfect to me.

Bummer on still having issues with posts. Technology can be so vexing.

  8. Why do they do that with the fireworks on NYE? They did it here too.

Welp, we are four days into 2021 and all is well . . knock on wood.

    Happy Monday Monika.

    1. Knock on wood is right! Yeah those cretins need to think about how they upset pets, veterans, or anyone who suffers from PTSD.

    1. What is it about some people who have a need to set off booming noises? I just don’t get it?

  9. Oh, we like that definition. Short-lived timeframe:) We had fireworks here too, but they didn’t seem to bother any of us. We slept through them.

Mom used to try to be organized and get posts ready ahead of time. But now she has a hard time just coming up with ideas for any post:( What happened to her mojo?

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  10. We sometimes have a professional show of fireworks at the neighbor across the street, they have a HUGE property…our pups don’t seem nearly as bothered by them as did Angel MJF; he work try to bark them away, inside or outside…he would bark himself into exhaustion. Thank goodness he was deaf, (from his elderly years), by the time those neighbors moved in there.

However it was very quiet around here this year. We are old fuddy-duddies and watched the ball come down, said Happy New Year to eachother and wen t to our nests!

    1. Ain’t nothing wrong with being a fuddy-duddy. I’m rather found of peace and quiet myself and anyone who practices it!

  11. Mew mew mew wee think yore furry organized Miss Monika unlike a sirtain LadyMew who iss all over THE place!! (Just meowin LadyMew…)
Mind you with her not knowin where Mistur Dave was shee has to bee xcused fore beein all over THE place.

    1. Your LadyMew is welcome to clean here if she ever has a hankering for something to do! LOL

I think she’s probably right on this year being much like last year with (hopefully) an exception of a certain president not making things worse. Patience is definitely going to be the watchword for this year.

      1. Mee-yow wee agree ’bout Mistur Certain Pressydent. Wee hope hee goess to his place an playss ALOT of golf 😉 Furrever!!
An LadyMew ran out of steem so there iss more cleenin today….
        **purrss** BellaDharma

  12. Sorry about the fireworks! Our dogs hate them too. We had a nice quiet evening. Was different than most years, but it was relaxing and I was with the people I love so , all was good! 🙂 Happy New Year!

  13. We heard the fireworks going off all around us – until around 1 am – but thankfully Ducky wasn’t all that bothered by them. She barked at a few, but otherwise ignored them.

As to NYRs, I haven’t made any in years. Maybe decades. As Phenny and Nelly said, they just end up in the trash can at the end of the week anyway. Better we should just try to make the world a kinder place every day.

Hope all goes well with your laptop! The DVD drive in mine went kaput a few months ago, so my brother bought me an external one for Xmas and set it up for me. Luckily, he’s good at that kind of thing. He’s brought several of my dead computers back to life for me over the years. This laptop has been pretty good though, despite the crapped-out DVD drive.

Have a great week, my friend!!

    1. A good IT relative is worth their weight in gold! I’m a heavy user and while the laptop is nearly 7 years old, it has been a real champ but probably needs a good tune up. I’m no computer genius and even less so with Apple products who generally perform nicely. Happy New Year and give that sweet Ducky a good belly rub from me.

      1. For the kind of money you probably spent on that Apple laptop, it darn well ought to be a “real champ”!!

Ducky says thank you for the belly rub in advance – she’ll get it when we go back inside. 🥰

        1. When you add in updates to software, the difference is probably not as significant as you might think. My last laptop was moderately inexpensive but then I needed to upgrade Windows a couple of times so probably evened out pretty close in the end. The hardware didn’t last nearly as long and trouble free as the Mac.

  14. One of our “knuckle dragging neighbors” decided to go outside and bang pots at midnight. Scared the cats and made me think one of my major appliances was breaking!

  15. Our new year was quiet and no fireworks for a change. We slept right though the out with the old and in with the new.

    Love the funny.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. Scritches to the pups. ♥

    1. Glad you had a nice peaceful New Years. I thought that cartoon was perfect for this week. No doubt there will be a load of extra full trash bins with resolutions by the end of the week.

  16. Lulu: “We did the usual New Year’s celebration here where Mama and Dada watch the ball drop in Times Square at 9pm, declare it New Year’s, and go to bed.”
Charlee: “Dada says that’s one of the benefits of being New Yorkers who live in California!”

    1. Good for you guys. Time zones can be a nice benefit when you’re out West and the world follows EST. Especially if you retire early in the evening. 🙂

  17. I know how bad it is for the doggies. I still remember how frightened Sally was. Our cats take it better, but they’re somewhat frightened, too.
Good luck with your laptop, and have a great week,
    Pit

    1. Thanks for the good wishes. I think we’re gonna need them.

It’s so sad watching how animals process fireworks. The stress they experience is just heartbreaking.

  18. people want to be loud. They drive loud cars, rant loudly and fireworks… oy vey. Peace… please

  19. BBC, huh? Never thought of that. Good idea! Ours were all cuddled up in bed with us (including 70 lb Riley) like it was the night before Christmas on NYE, while we anticipated being awakened by said dreaded fireworks. Apparently the pups’ prayers were answered and all our neighbors also fell asleep early. Isn’t it nice to be able to set up your post early, days, even weeks ahead? I do that a lot, then rearrange publish dates as necessary, LOL. Love the funny…so true! Amy and the “we take up the whole bed and give our Mom a backache” gang.

    1. The BBC is so FABULOUS and I’m always so grateful to the local PBS station that carries it. I’ll be thinking of you guys today as you find out about the mass. Know I’m sending loads of pawsitive energy and hope the back ache goes away soon.

  20. I hate fireworks. Without the big displays, it’s just loud noise. Fortunately it doesn’t seem to bother my cats but I know dogs are very sensitive to it.

    1. If only it didn’t bother dogs. I’ve seen some so terrorized it was heartbreaking to witness. They bother me too after a professional fireworks event went badly years ago. The panic everyone experienced that night was horrific. I can’t imagine what they do to veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan war.

      1. We had some very bad dog episodes. A few years back an older dog jumped the fence and was hit by a car. Those fireworks were for a unique occasion and there was no warning or the owners wouldn’t have had the dog out.

        1. When I was growing up, a beloved German Shepherd lost his mind during the 4th of July fireworks and jumped the fence. He was never the same afterward and we had to find him a home out in the countryside where he could live out his days peacefully. Always felt especially heartbroken about that.

  21. it was quiet lke always here… we drink and eat and if we have boom&bang than only from food LOL we agree with your descripton of new years resolution… and we wait for friday to send all resolutions to the trashcan ;O)

    1. You’re lucky. I think people buy them online now which makes it worse. I’d much prefer professional shows over tanked up neighbors who live closely together. 😬
