Nature Friday

Happy Friday folks! Once again we join our weekly hosts, Rosy, Sunny, Arty and Jakey from LLB in Our Backyard to see exactly how crazy it has been. Don’t forget to click on the link to check out to see what all Blogville has shared.

Will you lookee here…despite last weeks snow dump, signs of spring are popping up all over. Yay…color me happy!

One of the nicer aspects of our long walks is that the dogs get to sniff around and explore. Elsa is my huntress Ninja and I can always tell when she’s tracking a bunny or squirrel who’s run through a yard. Her nose undulates as her head slowly moves back and forth taking in all those delicious smells. It’s good for her mind as well as her body that she can track critter scents. When she’s looking for a place to pee, she adopts the “Goldilocks…this one is just right” approach, turning in circles over and over and over again. On a cold blustery day it can be maddening and I’m often mumbling, “just pee for crying out loud already.” But it’s her process and somewhat ‘entertaining.’ Norman’s only prerequisite for peeing is ‘yup, looks just fine to me’ method. Corners and trees always receive extra attention, especially now that 95% of last week’s snow has melted and the ground is damp and apparently full of interesting smells.

We normally pass by a few gardens in the neighborhood every day where spring is definitely sprouting. Take for instance these tulips. What an inspiring sight to see tulips after the bitter cold and snow from recent days.

Flowers

Last weeks wild weather didn’t impact the reticulated irises that had begun to bloom or the crocuses either for that matter. They seemed to flourish after the moisture almost in defiance. Look at this bouquet of sunshine!

Flowers

I even noticed a tiny emerging bit of sedum mixed in with the irises.

Flowers

My own garden seems to be waking up too. Yesterday was a chilly day (after a gorgeous sunny and warm Wednesday) with a bit of drizzle but these emerging hyacinths still caught my eye with their bright green color against the brown mulch and leaves. Note to self, time to start cleaning up the flower beds of blown in leaves. Again.

Flowers

Considering the lack of sun exposure in my yard (it’s pretty shady from large trees), this was a most welcomed sight. I can expect there will be lots of victims candidates for Norman’s sniffing sessions in the near future. A word to the wise…lupines…you’ll need to grow strong and expect lots of ‘water’ in the future.

Any big plans to enjoy nature this weekend? Whatever you do, hope your time outdoors is well spent and you are able to catch some visible signs of spring bursting forth in your neck of the woods.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Oh what amazin’ signs of SPRING!!!! Thingies are startin’ to bloom here too! And, we are gettin’ some more rain the next couple of days, so that is pawsome! yeah, I usually don’t likes wet furs, butts, like you guys, gotta welcome any rain we can gets to stay out of the awful drought!
    Kisses,

    1. Most definitely. Rain or snow, we’ll happily take whatever comes our way.

  2. Thank you Elsa. Next time my human shows signs of impatience as I carefully and with precision line myself up to pee, I shall know to simply bark “but it’s my process”…
    Toodle pip!
    Bertie.

    1. Just hoping there’ll be more spring snows to replenish the reservoirs. 🤞🏼

  3. Oh, lucky you! There is nothing like those first spring blossoms. Our ground is still snow and ice covered, but hopefully after we get through this cold weekend things will finally start to change. I’m so ready, and so is Luke. He is missing all those smells!

  4. Lulu: “We have trees and stuff that are starting to leaf out, too! No flowers in the back yard yet, though, except for some weeds. Do those count?”
Charlee: “Anything that attracts butterflies or bugs is a flower in our book, Lulu!”

  5. Wow! Those colours are spectacular! Jeez… I shall go out and look for green… hahahahaha! Sorry… there is still way too much snow here…
    Happy weekend Monika!

    1. No doubt more of the white stuff will show up here but the beauty of spring bulbs is they are nothing if not hardy. Happy weekend to you (what’s left of it).

  6. They are all bouquets and patches of sunshine! Great pictures! Just looking at them warms me up. Around here, we are still looking at heaps of black snow (snirt).

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    1. Nothing, eh? I would have thoughts spring was much closer in your neck of the woods than in mine.

  7. Wednesday is the huntress in this establishment while Jack is just happy to be here.

And spring . . the colors anyway . . . how close and yet how far.

    1. Glad you were able to make some outdoor time.

Picky potty goers must be a girl thing. The males can go anywhere! And usually do. 🤣

  9. We are just starting to see Iris’s here too!! I always love the first blooms of Spring the most!

  10. Lovely spring flowers! Looks like we’ve even got a few jonquils or daffodils (I can’t tell the difference) starting to come up out back. And my pansies have come back from the dead!

    1. Yay for the pansies! We’re seeing some daffodils starting to sprout too. It’s the season of hope and renewal. Have a super weekend.

  11. Not a sign of Spring although my pussy willow bush has some early little fuzzies on it ! Nothing else is budding or blooming anywhere – we’ve had a lot of COLD and absolutely no WARM. This week there are a couple of days in the 60s forecast so maybe there’s hope yet! Love the photos and hearing the routines Elsa and Norman have for finding “just the right spot”……LOL

    Hugs, Pam

  12. After a night of about 18F, its nice to see your budding springtime pics!! But there is hope yet, as the temos are to be in the 50’s by Monday! Hooray!

Its funny to see the different pee-mail techniques that dogs have! Mine too….one has to mark up every blade and the other might not even pee once in a two mile hike. Go figure.

    1. Pee mail techniques…boy could I write a book about them! Yay for warmer temps. It’s gonna be in the 60’sF by tomorrow and a great time to get out and check out what else is planning on reemerging. Have a pawsome weekend!

  13. I can not wait to see tulips in the gardens around us (we have none, thanks to two who want to stay anonymous). Poodles are mighty fine hunting dogs, I know a blogger who passed her hunting exams with a poodle, she was amazing! Maybe Elsa still has all the skills what made this breed to a super hunting partner?

    1. Blooming tulips are definitely a sign that spring is here. Elsa…she’s a world class Ninja, but to be around other dogs…not so much. My shoulders wouldn’t be able to stand up to the task. 😁

    1. That’s it! Liquid nitrogen. Got it. Have a super weekend and give Max a nice long ear rub from me.

  14. Oh the signs of spring are all over the place and it makes my heart happy.

We’re staying home this weekend. It’s supposed to rain and that’s a very good thing.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. Scritches to the pups and add a smooch for Norman. ♥

    1. Enjoy those showers (maybe they’ll turn into white stuff by the time they reach us). Have a super weekend!
