Monday Musings ~ March 14, 2022

Pi DayToday on Monday Musings, we’re offering a bit of a pun-ish haiku pi-ku for you. Celebrated on March 14, Pi Day is the recognition of that mathematical constant known as the Greek letter ‘π,’ you know…that transcendental number where 3.14 are the first digits (but which go on indefinitely). March 14 marks Pi Day because of the numerical date and because it happens to be the same birthdate as theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein, who discovered the theory of relativity.

A ‘Slice of Pi’ ~ History/Background

Founded back in 1988 by San Franciscan based physicist, curator and artist, Larry Shaw, March 14 was chosen because the numerical date (3.14) coincides with the first three digits of Pi. Today is also Albert Einstein’s birthday. The official U.S. designation of Pi Day began in 2009 while UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) officially proclaimed March 14 as International Day of Mathematics in 2019.

Back in high school, we all learned that Pi is the calculation of the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. But did you know that Pi has been around since ancient times? Egyptians and Babylonians knew about Pi with the first known calculation made by Archimedes in 250 B.C. The earliest known use of the Greek letter ‘π’ to represent the ratio was made by Welsh mathematician, William Jones in 1706, and is thought to be some form of shorthand for the word “periphery.”

As noted, today also marks the birthdate of Albert Einstein, the theoretical physicist. So for those who may prefer a different kind of tasty treat for a birthday bash (and we think Einstein just might be one of them), how about we serve up a yummy celebratory treat with this formula? Happy Birthday, Mr. Einstein.

Pi

Delicious coincidence? I think not.

Two additional, but all important questions for today then are: (1) cherry or apple and (2) with or without ice cream?

We hope your Monday is extra tasty with loads of smiles.

Pi Day

Live, love, bark! 🐾

    1. You and me both. Nothing better than a piece of pie except maybe another piece of pie!

    1. My sympathies. Although eliminating sugar probably isn’t such a bad thing.

  1. Apple! But I don’t like pie crust. I usually just eat the apple filling and throw the rest away. No, ice cream. Never really like it, but my hubby eats enough for both of us. 🤷‍♀️😆 (Love the play on PI/pie on that crust).

    1. Bwahahahahaha! You guys crack me up (and don’t know what you’re missing 😉 )

  2. This hole PI thing iss far beeyond mee Miss Monika. May mee an BellaSita Mum an Sweet Norman an Elsa just have a nice peece of Punkin Pie???
Wee KNOw what Punkin Pie iss! 😉
***nose bopss*** BellaDharma an {{hugss}} BellaSita Mum

    1. Yum, pumpkin is a tasty treat and the pumpkin is good for tummies. Happy 🥧 Day.

    1. Oh yes, when the crust is good the pie is even better. Good choice, Michael. Happy 🥧 Day to you and the girls.

  3. A wonderful musing and I ate a slice of the pie. Of course I did.

I also linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches to the pups, a smooch to Norman and a big hug to you. ♥

    1. As always, thanks for the link, Sandee. Wishing you a tasty and ‘pawsome’ 🥧 day! Hugs and tail wags frm me and the Ranch Hands.

    1. Plus you’re smarter than me (probably just because of Lenny). Happy 🥧 Day!

  4. Thanks for the reminders about this day. I always forget. And to answer your questions: both and without! (Did you make that pie in the last picture?)

    1. Truth be told, not that one. My cherry pies are far less artistic. 🤣 Here’s hoping you have a swell (and tasty) 🥧 Day.

  5. I may not be much of a math person, but I did find the history of Pi interesting. Thanks for the post and especially the tasty treat. Cherry with ice cream please. 🙂 Happy Monday!

        1. Bummer. I’m more into pie than cake (but not cream pies-blech). Despite its effect on the waistline.

          1. Oh, I made a delicious coconut-cream pie back in the day. And what about curds? Lemon meringue or Key Lime Pie? Are those acceptable? (Graham cracker crusts make a huge difference to me.

            1. They’re fine though I cannot stomach graham cracker anything, let alone pie crust. Picky little bugger, aren’t I? 😆

              1. Isn’t that funny? What if another cookie is used? I do like pie crust but must have a minimal amount. I don’t know if it’s the lard that hurts me…I suspect it is.

                1. Sorry you can’t enjoy one of life’s tasty pleasures. I use a walnut or pecan crust when making a key lime pie but truthfully prefer plain ole cherry or pumpkin. Key lime (and lemon meringue for that matter) takes so long to zest for my impatient taste buds. 😉

                  1. I can… but I pay for it! Can’t understand the pumpkin pie thing 😉 But Ii do LOVE cherry. Hah! on the key lime and lemon…

                    1. To each his (or her as the case may be) own, eh? There’s something about pumpkin that reminds me of comfort. Perhaps it’s the cinnamon (and all the family Thanksgiving get-togethers over the decades that appeal to me). Custards are tref since I have an aversion to eggs. Pie cherry trees are found all around Colorado and thus cherry always makes for a big hit.

                    2. Yeah, pumpkin never made it to our Thanksgiving table. I tasted it once and nope.
Well now… an aversion to eggs changes everything! Cherry is never dissed, I agree…

                    3. People generally love eggs. Alas it’s never been a dish I’ve enjoyed. The smell of them cooking grosses me out. I can only stomach them with loads of cheese, salsa or veggies. Guess I’m weird 😆

                    4. Oh, I know peeps who don’t love them.
And here I am, willing to put a poached or fried egg on any leftover, no matter how weird so… who’s weirder? 😉

                    5. Sorry but fried eggs make me want to put a gun to my head. It’s that ‘smell’ thing again.

                    6. Eggs and Black walnuts are two scents I cannot abide. Without feeling a bit 🤢 about the gills.

                    7. Interesting…
I have no idea what black walnuts smell like. Now you’ve got me thinking… I know! I cannot stand the smell of papaya – smells like barf to me.

                    8. Right! It’s pretty disgusting. To look at and to eat. Blech 🤮
