Monday Musings ~ February 5, 2024

Winter returned to the Mile High City over the past weekend yet our celebration was a bit muted compared to some of the animals at the Portland zoo in that video. Can’t help but smile at seeing their apparent joyful glee. Our storm dumped anywhere from 6-15 inches of super heavy, wet stuff throughout the metro area with some neighborhoods experiencing power outages. Wilson was frisky in the snow but equally excited to come back inside after an extended potty break. Elsa found walking on the crusty snow more than a bit challenging and not entirely to her majesty’s liking as she walked gingerly on it, sinking in with each step which was likely most startling to her sense of equilibrium, given her somewhat wobbly state. Hopefully she’ll receive the all clear to resume to short leash walks after today’s scheduled staple removal and can begin the process of building back her muscles. Please keep your paws crossed for us.

Some local residents experienced power outages might have felt a little like this water buffalo which reminds me that cattle egrets can be stinkers and just don’t care (maybe that’s the price of tick removal?). This pic begs the question at least from golfers if they are related to Canadian Geese in the give-a-hoot category? Courses throughout the metro area have become landing strips for enormous flocks of the pesky birds.

Bird poop

Never fear for us, the forecast is expected to reach back into the 40’s & 50’sF (4-10ºC) throughout the week (before the next storm arrives), which should melt most of the welcomed moisture.

In the “eek, I neglected to acknowledge our double win for last week’s Teaser” category, here’s a pic of the badge we won. It was exciting and quite unexpected to be a firstie, let alone accurately guessing where the Teaser pic was taken-talk about a-m-a-z-i-n-g! Many thanks to our friend Teddy and his mom for the super cute badge. We’re very grateful and thrilled that we won. Maybe all those middle of the night ‘chirps’ by a certain princess aren’t all bad though I’m looking forward to when I can sleep an entire night uninterrupted in my bed.

Best wishes for a pawsome Monday.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Java Bean: “Ayyy, that water buffalo does not look amused …”
Lulu: “Neither do I when you accidentally pee on me while you’re trying to mark the tree I’m sniffing.”
Java Bean: “Oh, right, sorry, and sí, it’s totally accidental …”

We had to giggle at the water buffalo’s decoration!
Canada Geese are such messy critters…not to mention when large groups of them decide its time to cross the street to the other grass, or pond…they flock at pond not too far from our house, and they are noisy, too!

Hope Elsa gets an all clear from her vet.

Funny that Elephants enjoy the snow, being as they come from snowless parts. Who knew?!

I can only guess, but am sure the novelty for the elephants may have worn off quickly. It always does when it turns cold. LOL
Thanks for the good wishes-Elsa did great at the vet and now we’re starting the 6 week rehab building back muscle tone. Oh joy. 🙂

  3. We had no idea that elephants and otters and such enjoy the snow so much. Polar Bears, yes. Better watch out the Canadian geese flying overhead don’t drop poo on you like the buffalo egret! XOX Xena and my gang

I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

Congratulations on the double badge. Wow “6-15 inches of super heavy, wet stuff” is a lot. We are not going skiing this year but it makes me wonder how it looks like in the ski places, like Breckenridge.

Thanks. I think they’re measuring the snow in feet. 😊

  5. I had never seen an elephant in snow before. I live a very sheltered life . . .

As for the water buffalo, I guess since they can’t just go on a Target run for some tick repellant, they’re gonna have to deal with their little visitors.

That elephant in the snow just made me grin from ear to ear. Guess nature was trying to balance out the symbiotic relationship between the water buffalo and the bird but it seems like the buffalo got the lousy end of it. Happy Monday.

  6. How we would love to join those animals at the zoo in their delightful snow. Ours has all disappeared, and it feels like Spring has returned already. We love our snow, but we won’t complain too much because the sun puddles on the deck are pretty darn nice too.

Hard to believe your snow is gone already. We figured with the cold it’d be around for a while. Sun puddles are nice this time of year. We’re enjoying clear blue skies and mid 40’sF today. It’s absolutely delightful.

  7. John W. Howell – South Texas Gulf Coast – I have been working in business for over forty years and now have the time to work in special areas of interest. My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live in the Austin area with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.

A big congratulations for being a double winner. Loved the video of the elephants and other animals playing in the snow. The polar bears looked right at home. Best wishes to Elsa on the staple removal.

Thanks John. I thought there must have been a mistake on being first. Mountain time puts me at a time zone disadvantage. I had to pinch myself and kept thinking it’s not possible I could be first.

Elsa did great at the vet’s this morning. Next up rehab for the next 6 weeks. Oh joy. Just hope I can finally sleep in my bed now. 🤞🏻 Happy Monday.

Glad you liked that video-it made me smile. Our neighborhood didn’t receive that much-only about 6-7 inches. It’s super wet and heavy and with today’s clear skies, the sun is melting it nicely on the southern exposures. We managed to take our morning constitution in just a sweatshirt and fleece vest. The sun felt really good on our skin.

You got a lot of snow…..we haven’t had any now for a couple of weeks – in fact had some days in the upper 50s. I’m sure Winter isn’t finished with us yet though! CONGRATS again on your double Teaser win – that does NOT happen often!

I could not stop smiling while watching the elephant in particular enjoying the snow. Happy Monday.

  12. A whole bunch of Awww’s in that video. You made me smile and say Awww more than once.

Thankfully my stitches were all inside. The incision is healing nicely and it will be a month tomorrow. Surgery/incidents are never fun. Hope you feel better soon.

But wait; stop the presses! Am I having a(nother) senior moment or did I miss something about Elsa? I went back through a few of your recent posts but saw no references….

Thanks for the well wishes, Bruce. I’m hopeful she can back to being more of her ole self though there’s still another 6 weeks of rehab in store.

Last week I saw so many geese on the fairway at a nearby course I thought, uh-oh…the golfers aren’t going enjoy walking from green to green. Have a super-duper Monday.

Since it’s rare for rain in these parts, a good wet snow is always welcome. Even the 6+ inches that fell at our house is melting in southern exposures. Naturally most of our exposure is north. LOL Happy Monday.

I keep forgetting to ask what happened to Elsa? I must have missed it in the posts.
Happy Monday to you all! Keep your snow. I don’t want it.

He rather surprised me by his bouncing around in it. He’s not a huge fan yet though it seemed to unleash a certain level of friskiness. He certainly wasn’t unhappy to go back inside. I’m gonna keep my eyes on how he continues to act in it as he becomes more accustomed to the city. Hard to believe that tomorrow he’ll have been with me for a month. Happy Monday.

Wasn’t that video quite joyful-especially the elephants. It was amazing that it rained all night and snowed the entire day. Gotta love that moisture! Here’s to a terrific Monday.

  20. An elephant and snow was a connection I would never have made!
Best wishes for Elsa…and hopes for decent weather soon to take her out.
