Monday Musings ~ January 19, 2026

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Given today’s political climate, I think this quote is an appropriate one for the times and hope you are doing your part to spread the Reverend’s message. We need it more than ever. In the U.S. in particular, looking away can no longer be the norm.

MLK

It’s cold, snowy day in the 303 (and a bit quite unexpected-I know I sure wasn’t prepared for temps in the teens AND snow, even if the snow is pretty minor). The sky is clear now and we hope we reach the forecasted 41F degrees (5C). I know a lot of you have been buried in cold and snow filled and don’t expect too much sympathy but we’ve been acclimated far too long to 50’s and 60’s over the past couple of months.

As we typically do on Monday’s, we’re also sharing a smile since we still need to smile in these crazy and uncertain times. Wishing you a reflective Monday that’s filled with good intentions, positive actions with lots of smiles this week.

And if kids have been bugging you, here’s a strategy that might help. Stay warm and have a great Monday reflecting on the legacy of MLK.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

    1. Tails Around the Ranch – Denver, CO – The inspiration behind this blog was one knuckleheaded Standard Poodle named Sam but is now inspired by a House Pony-Wilson. I'm Monika, the upright. Living in the Denver metro area, we post about dogs, rescue and nature. So grab your favorite beverage and be prepared to howl along with our adventures. And don't forget to bark your 'pup-tacular' comment; we'd love to hear from you.

If that snowman was eating a dog, would you still pee on it, Bean?

      I know, right?! Too funny.

  1. As a believer in Jesus, my take is in every situation I can either choose to become more like what He told us to be, or less like what He told us to be. Same thing, really, as what we do to our soul when we turn away.

  2. BellaDharma an BellaSita Mum – On Georgian Bay..... – Welcome to THE Purrfect Pad. My name is Sherri-Ellen & my current Kitty Girl is BellaDharma a black part Siamese cat. I started blogging in August 2005 on Yahoo 360 with Mingflower my Bluepoint Siamese. Then transferred to Multiply...Mingflower went to Summerland & NYLABLUE my BluePoint Siamese/Burmese cross took over. When Multiply was closing a handful of our blogging friends recommended WordPress & we found a home here & made many new friends. Everyone followed the antics & struggles of NYLABLUE until her passing Nov. 22nd, 2014 to Summerland. A week later a little bouncing Burmese boy I met at a local adoption event joined me here! Dec. 9th, 2014. Purrince Siddhartha Henry came to live with me & regaled us with his journey towards 'Enlightenment'. He was a Burmese Buddhist with many health issues but he searched for meaning in his Life. After his lifelong struggle with Panleukopenia. Siddhartha Henry lost his battle & left for Pure Land August 28th, 2018. He was only 4 years & 1 month old. I've never totally gotten over the loss of my "Little Man". And this is where I get VERY serious. This Purrfect Pad blog is not all sunshine & roses. This blog is about REAL life with special needs cats who come into my life. We share our time together & we share the good, the bad & the ugly. This is a REAL blog. Yes we DO laugh & have fun & take Selfies! And we share each cat's struggles whether health issues or behavioural problems. And we share about my ongoing battle with 3 health conditions that can render me unable to walk plus having Cirrhosis of Liver & Seizures. We ask our friends & followers to respect that THE Purrfect Pad is anything but 'purrfect'. I am disabled & each of my cats' have had special needs. Everyone is welcome here as long as you are kind & respectful. If you have questions feel free to ask them. Sept. 6th, 2018 BellaDharma aka Baby Girl joined THE Purrfect Pad. Thanks for your thoughts on MLK. He was a gigantic force-and I was pleased to find a lesser well known quote of his for the day.

Three feet?? Gosh, I’m almost jealous. The icy cold temps, not quite as much. But in good news, spring will be here before we know it. Stay safe and warm.

MLK was absolutely one of a kind…..strength and determination personified which is more than we can say for some so-called leaders today. We think that snowman “art” is so hilarious!!! What a great idea.

He really was one of kind. He exemplified dignity in the face of unimaginable obstacles. We could use more like him, especially these days.

That kid eating snowman just made me giggle.

  4. Wonderful quote from MLK! I think I wil include it in my post tomorrow. 🙂 Was wondering what quotes of his to include, so thanks!
We had a little snow Saturday night. Just enough to make the roads slick on Sunday. This coming weekend we are supposed to get more. Will see what happens.
40’s sound warm now but I understand its quite different from the 50’s-60’s. 🙂
    LOL at the snowman!
    Happy Monday!

  5. One of the great leaders back inside a team when the great leaders were all being stolen from us. Let’s hope their lessons prevail.

That kid eating snowman was the best! I can think of a few millennials I’d love to show it to-course they are so oblivious to the rest of the world, they probably wouldn’t get it.

MLK was a great leader, we need more like him, especially today. Happy Monday!

  7. Hilarious snowman! Luckily, I don’t have a problem with neighborhood kids, they are rarely seen, but that points to another problem… shouldn’t they be out playing?

Good for you-enjoy the sun. I think we got to 40F but it was crisp (but beautifully sunny). Hope it was a great Monday!

  9. My Golden Life – Upstate South Carolina – I love animals, especially dogs. I enjoy US history, and reading biographies of our former presidents and other historical figures. I love the music of the '60s and '70s since I was growing up in those decades. I love the Beatles and Andy Williams equally.
    My Golden Life says:

Oh My God, that snowman nearly made me pee myself! I’m sure there were times in our childhood when Mom would have thanked that snowman for grabbing my brother and me! 🤣🤣

And, as always, I love the MLK quote. He was, without a doubt, one of the most honorable humans of his time! Sam was lucky enough – as a young teen – to have met him once while on vacation with his family at a very popular Presbyterian Church conference/resort place in the WNC mountains. (His dad was a PC minister at the time.)

It’s been pretty cold (low 20sF) here some nights lately, too. They were calling for snow Saturday night/Sunday morning, but we never got any. But we didn’t get freezing rain, either, which was the other “option”.

      Tails Around the Ranch says:

Ok, now I’m howling with your comment about the snowman, Sue. It sure cracked me up (luckily I didn’t pee 😂). What a memory to have met MLK in person. He was truly a unique and special human…we need more like him these days. I’m beginning to sense a tiny shift in people’s thoughts about what’s going on. Thank heavens but for the love of all that holy what in the bloody blue blazes has taken them so long getting here?? Hoping your Monday was terrific and the week gets better with each day. Hugs and tail wiggles. Give the Zen kiddos a nice ear rub from me. Stay warm!

    That snowman, OMD!! Bwahahaha!!
We have snow, and you’d think that here in Michigan peeps would know how to drive in it if they have to be out, but there have been SO many accidents around the state, including a 100+ pileup. Trucks jackknifed and on and on…sheesh! And our wind chills are in the below zero zone…worse is yet to come. later in the week if the forecasters have it right. I pray they do not!

      Tails Around the Ranch says:

Those big vehicle pile ups are scary. I don’t understand why people feel they can drive fast because they have an SUV. On ice, it doesn’t matter. Adds in semis and it’s the perfect recipe for disaster. I hope things calm down soon and stop being so winter ugly. We were getting used to all those 50+ degree days. Happy Monday. Stay safe and warm.

I can usually wear enough layers to stay warm, but my hands are always cold. And taking them on and off to pick up after Wilson and take a pic of something doesn’t help. Still…breathing fresh crisp air is such a joy!

Thanks Sandee. MLK truly was a great American. We need his vision more than ever. The child eating snowman made me laugh too. Wishing you a wonderful Monday. And, as always, we appreciate you adding us to your Monday blog hop. You’re the best!

I sure hadn’t expected last night’s little (emphasis on the little) gift but we’ll take what nature is willing to gift us. The National Western Stock Show ends this weekend and it’s always freezing cold during stock show and it’s just now starting to fulfill that forecast the past 3 or 4 days.

Had to chortle at the child eating snowman. It made me laughed out loud. Hoping you have a great Monday!

  18. Snow day ! Well that’s one snowman with a Frosty attitude! 😅. Still unseasonably warm up hers at the Golden K. 67 degrees yesterday. I spent most of the day outside with The Girls. Of course we always need the rain (and snow up the hill) but hey- we might as well enjoy what we can’t control. I hope life is settling down at your new digs. And yes, let’s do what’s right for the well being of ourselves and our fellow humans. Have a good week at, is it now, The Barn?

Hee, hee…sometime I have that same frosty attitude.

It’s been horribly dry here too, high country snowpack is significantly down. While everyone enjoys 50’s & 60’s in January, there will be a reckoning come summertime. We’ve even had fire warnings and with the wind increasing all the time, not a good outlook ahead.

We’re still organizing the new space but making incremental progress. Yup, from Ranch to Barn…wishing you a fantastic Monday, Mike. Please give the Golden Girls a good ear rub from me.

  20. A perfect quote for this day…and these days, Monika. The week has started out on two positive notes here, as the sun has returned from its couple of days off, and I won’t have to move any white stuff out of the way for a few days. It’s the little things that make life great.😉Have a great week!

  21. A great quote…wish we could force politicians to live by it!
Trade winds here, blowing a hooley, so dogs disgusted and refusing to leave the house, the winds being, of course, my fault to judge by the reproachful expressions.

I keep seeing tiny forward steps but with the firehose of ugly hate and outrageous, it’s not enough. People have to become more engaged. We can no longer wait to rid ourselves of this malignancy. I’m sure a treat or two will get you back in The Thugs’ good graces. Happy Monday, Helen.

  22. John W. Howell – South Texas Gulf Coast – I have been working in business for over forty years and now have the time to work in special areas of interest. My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live in the Austin area with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.

I know…and the National Western Stock Show is current on and the temps are ALWAYS miserably cold. It wouldn’t be nearly as bad had we not had temps 15-20 degrees above normal and definitely out of shape for dealing with cold temps. Wishing you a great Monday with at least lots of sunshine even if it’s cold. It’s always much better when the sun is shining and not gloomy and cloudy.

Funny how that happens. And yes, getting used to warmer temps is a double-edged sword.
Here, it is not too bad (for me) 23F, feelsl ike 9F 😉
I’ll be going out for my lunchtime walk and the sun is truly attempting to pierce through. The snow as stopped. for now!

Those aren’t horrible temps. Today’s teens just caught me off guard. It’ll take my hands some getting use the current temps. They were quite frozen when I shoveled the walk. Luckily my neighbor came and helped and good company makes it much better. 😉 Enjoy your lunchtime walk.

No, not at all. My thighs are feeling the cold thanks to the fact I’m wearing jeans and my hands are cold from constantly taking them out of my mittens to take pictures but I don’t doubt if I were out there for more than 30 minutes, my hands would have aclimated.
Yay! So glad your neighbour helped you!
