Monday Musings ~ February 12, 2024

It’s Monday.  Again. How did this happen to us?

Monday smiles

We hope you all survived the weekend and enjoyed an exciting Super Bowl. No doubt many were disappointed by yesterday’s outcome but if it was an exciting game you wanted, I think you will admit, it was a full serving. Can anyone explain to me how in the world Patrick Mahomes managed to pull off that win? Maybe another ‘conspiracy’ I’ve heard over the years that suggests he’s a witch, is true? I dunno. I think that’s the longest I’ve held my breath watching a game. On another note, were there any notable commercials that tickled your fancy? Was it just me or were there LOTS of them? What did you think about the half-time show. If you didn’t watch the Super Bowl, did you manage to catch Puppy Bowl XX? It definitely had a great outcome with more pups and kitties finding their fur-ever homes. Whether you were rooting for Team Ruff (with its own exciting last second win) or Team Fluff, you couldn’t help but enjoy the all the canine and feline fun. For highlights of the game, you can click here and to see who won the MVP, click here.

International Epilepsy Day

Today is also International Epilepsy Day where there is a concerted and worldwide effort to bring awareness to this terrible health condition for both people and pets. As the parent of an epileptic pet, it’s a topic near and dear to my heart. If epilepsy has touched your life there are organizations who can help by provide awareness, info and resources. You can read more about it and our story here. And don’t forget to wear purple today. Stay safe and strong epi-warriors and have a great week.

Elsa, epilepsy

  1. Did I already invite you? If I did, it bears repeating given your wonderful posts 😃 tx much for visiting my site. I love anything to do with books & would be thrilled if you’d write a guest blog post for my site, which is for anyone who enjoys writing, or books, and all the arts. If you think it might be fun or helpful to have my followers (who total about 10k across my various social media) meet you, here’s the link for general guidelines: https://wp.me/p6OZAy-1eQ – best, da-AL

  2. What a game, indeed. Slow start and ho hum until it became so not! That Mahomes kid… ya gotta wonder what special powers he has! He is amazing to watch (though less so in the first half…)
I am in Canada so Eff You to the commercials for us. We were only privy to a Christopher Walken one (pretty darn funny). I hate that they do that to us!!
Darn it! I usually make sure I wear purple for the day.

    1. The outcome surprised me. I couldn’t fathom such a comeback. It’s completely ironic that the Super Bowl tries to brand itself as a world wide championship game yet the ads usually only play to American audiences. Arrogant much?
Feel free to wear purple anytime in support of epilepsy awareness. 💜 🐾 💜

      1. No kidding! Nah… that’s our lovely CRTC at work. Can’t have the influence of you Americans on us Canadians so if anything is in simulcast (as in this case, it was playing on our CTV as well as your CBS but WE, whether we watch it on CTV or CBS, get the Canadien version. It pisses us off royally, needless to say.
        I do, my friend. 💜💕💜

        1. Maybe they’re actually doing you a favour. Not everything red, white & blue is 100% fabulous.

          1. Oh, I hear you. But it’s the same with YouTube and Netflix et al. Some things are available here, some there, some both. Annoying AF.

            1. Yeah I’ve noticed some videos on YouTube aren’t available when published on European blogs. Grrrr.

  3. Lulu: “Our Dada says the easiest way to find out if Mahomes is a witch is to build a large set of scales and use it to find out if he weighs the same as a duck. We have no idea what he’s talking about but he seems to be quite confident it would work, as long as nobody gets turned into a newt first.”

  4. I’m not interested in football but I can relate to the Epilepsy issue. Our family experienced its first episode with this condition recently and it was, to say the least, frightening. It came out of the blue, with no warning, but first responders did an excellent job and things are now back to a new normal.

    1. That’s one of the worst aspects of epilepsy—there’s rarely an warning. Sending you healing energy and positive thoughts. Glad to hear things have returned to a more manageable state. Hugs and tail wags. 💜

  5. What a game! I had to take yesterday to recover! I liked the picklebabies the best, I’m a sucker for talking babies. I don’t know usher’s music but it was fine, other people liked it i think. I have to comment on America the beautiful and the national anthem, they were great! Not overly dramatic! Nice job!

    1. It had to have been the most exciting Super Bowl I’ve ever seen. Didn’t see the first half (I was busy watching the Puppy Bowl and doing laundry) so missed the national anthem. While I like Usher’s music these half time shows have become quite the spectacle. It gave me a chance for some music in the background while I folded laundry…because I lead such an exciting life. LOL

  6. We keep Elsa in our heart always…..epilepsy is a scary thing even when it’s controlled. I didn’t stay up to see the Super Bowl BUT from what I saw from the next day’s “highlights” not sure outside of the last minutes I missed much! Halftime shows aren’t what they used to be – I guess because they were in Vegas it was over the top but I used to like marching bands at halftime (yes I’m old as dirt).

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Yeah, those marching bands are a relic for these spectacle events. Sad really, it just reinforces the fact this is no longer ‘just a game’ it’s big business. I could go the rest of my life without seeing Vegas glitz at a super bowl. Thanks for the kind thoughts about Elsa and her epilepsy. Despite her condition, she leads a pretty normal life which is the point for drawing attention to epilepsy-people and pets don’t have to suffer stigmatization.

      1. Absolutely…..and that stigmatization thing applies to SOO many other situations which deserve the same understanding! I honestly don’t like halftime shows that are shows. I know they have to fill the time with something – how about tryouts for “World’s Hunkiest Guy” or something like that? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

        Hugs, Pam

        1. Indeed. And they always seem to have some sort of technical issue. I wish they weren’t about bigger/flashier/more over the top. At some point, people need to realize you can’t sustain that forever.

    1. Thank you-she’s had such a rough life, I am committed to making her health not be yet another negative. Despite her quirkiness, she’s a sweetheart who deserves the same love and attention as any pet.

    1. Then you missed nothing but I hope you were able to check out the Puppy Bowl. The kitties were an adorable half time show.

  7. Happy Monday! I heard it was quite the game. I can imagine how tense both teams felt with it being so close and going into OT. Talk about blood pressure rising!

I did wear purple today, dear 💜Elsa. I hope that her epilepsy stays under control. It is a scary, awful thing. My friends 2 year old has it really bad. Has to have brain surgery later this month.

    1. Thanks for being supportive to the cause of epilepsy. We hope your friend’s 2-yr old has successful surgery. Can’t imagine that for a little kiddo. Elsa continues to manage her seizures fairly well; thanks for the well wishes. 💜 🐾 💜

        1. That’s often the case and all the more reason to be supportive. Hugs and positive wishes to your friend and their family. There are lots of supportive resources for folks who have seizures. I’ve learned so much from several of them that I attribute to Elsa’s well being. 💜

  8. Epilepsy is sort of part of our lives now, y=too, since in August of 2022, poppy had two seizures…so now he takes Keppra every day. Thankfully no more seizures since then.

Pawppy didn’t watch the game, and petcretary watched it in bits and pieces at her work…so she didn’t even see the commercials or the halftime show, BOL!

Did you get a huge dump of snow again?? None here…shhhh…don’t tell anyone, else we will get dumped on!

    1. I’m glad your Pawppy has his seizures well managed and will keep him in our thoughts.

We did receive another dumping-it made me think we were having another Groundhog Day like the movie.

Snow here is somewhat unusual in February but we can certainly benefit from the moisture. March and April are the big snow months but those spring storms are fine since they don’t last too long, melting quickly after a dump. I love spring storms. Did your petcretary see any of the Puppy Bowl? It was a very fun game and lots of pups and kitties found new homes which was the best part. 🥰

    1. It was quite the game. Both teams have been unkind to my team over the years so beating KC was only one highlight of our season.

Elsa is on anti-seizure medication in addition to supplemental CBD. The combination seems to be doing a decent job considering where she was when she was first adopted. We’re very lucky and continue to be as supportive as possible of peeps and pets who have epilepsy. 💜 🐾 💜

  9. I have a niece, Greta, who has epilepsy and our pug Daisy might have gotten it in her old age. She’s had two seizures within the last four months. However, the veterinarian says it is not often enough to say that she has epilepsy. We are monitoring. I did not know it was International Epilepsy Day today. We were cheering on Kansas City so the outcome was not bad for us, but it was a good game. We thought the commercials were awful.

    1. Some commercials were clever others just pitiful. Sorry your niece has epilepsy. It can be managed and with more education there is less stigmatization. At least that is our hope 💜🤞🏻💜 Sending gentle thoughts your way.

  10. The peeps here thought the commercials were overall rather underwhelming with a hit here or there. As for Mahomes, didn’t you know his middle name is MAGIC? Both teams are very good teams, but we are , of course, very happy that our KC Chiefs won.

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  11. I agree there were a lot of excellent commercials. The game itself was one of the better ones. The teams seemed pretty evenly matched. There were many hold breath moments for sure. I enjoyed Usher’s show but not Reba’s National Anthem. All in all it was great entertainment. The puppy bowl was very cute and you have to appreciate the fact that dogs do find forever homes as a result. Thanks for the reminder about Epilepsy. I am actually wearing purple today but in my best Howard Hughes mode no one will see it.

    1. We enjoyed the Super Bowl. It started slow, but was great toward the end. Thanks for mentioning epilepsy. We cared for an epileptic dog for 9 years, and praise anyone who cares for these pups.

      1. Thank you for caring for an epi-pup. They can still enjoy a good life despite having seizures and deserve a loving home. When I was a kid we had a couple of dogs who occasionally had seizures that were very terrifying to witness. We had no idea how to safely manage them back then. It’s good that people are better nowadays.

That was quite the nail biter of a game!

        1. The first full seizure our dog had was very scary. Afterwards, medication helped, until it didn’t. But she had a good life with people who loved her very much.

          1. Bless you guys for being there for her. It’s rough having an epi-dog but they deserve the loving care and attention that one would give to any pet. I’m always flabbergasted at the number of people who give up. We don’t do that for dogs with arthritis or other health conditions. Sigh.

  12. Spent much of Monday driving to see Annabell. The “Game” was on the TV and we watched it – or part of it – together. Didn’t understand any of it. It appeared to me to have more stops than actual game play – or is it all game play. Anyway, it was interesting. Monday was a lovely drive north from 41c here to 46c in Quorn. The hospital was quite cool but having been sitting in the sun all day, it took ages for the A/C to cool the car down for comfortable driving. Good photograph, Elsa – loved the Bandanna. PS. who actually won??

    1. I’m sure the American version of football leaves much to be desired in your neck of the woods. Whenever there’s a major championship game, there are as many ads as minutes on the playing field it seems. The league has to squeeze out every dime from people. Add in all the sports betting sites and well you almost lose interest in the game when you’re a fan. Neither team has been kind to my team over the years. Kansas City Chiefs won in the final seconds of overtime. I expected San Francisco to win but unforced errors did them no favors.

When it came to winners we could root for, a bunch of puppies and kittens founds new homes from the broadcast of the Puppy Bowl and that makes us happy. Give our best to Annabell as well as sweet Benji.

  13. Mom and I watched both Bowls – Puppy and Super. We are clueless about sports, but we completely understood the Puppy Bowl. All we came away with in the Super Bowl was that we didn’t win any money in the office pool that Mom was in. Oh well.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

    1. We felt like the real winners yesterday were all the puppies and kitties who were adopted. That was broadcast worth watching! Sorry our Mom didn’t win the office pool. Some people might say the game was rigged. 😉

  14. I’m pretty sure Mahomes’ made a deal with the devil…LOL

It was my 2 favorite teams playing, but I really love Brock Purdy and wanted to see him win. But they played he and the Niners played their best….

    Happy Monday!

    1. Trust me, my team has been on the short end of the stick way too many times against Mahomes but you gotta give them credit. It was an exciting game.

  15. Elsa, we don’t watch football, as we’re fast asleep at that hour🏈Our nephew Angel Bobo had epilepsy. Angel Bobo was treated with homeopathy and lived for 10 more years💜Double Healing Pawkisses especially for effurryone who is affected by epilepsy🐾😽💞

    1. Aww, we’re so sorry you had personal experience dealing with the Epi monster but pleased to learn Bobo lived 10 years. Happy Monday.

    1. It was a very entertaining game and so was the Puppy and Kitten bowl. We were so happy to see so many pets were able to find new homes.

  17. I’m always rooting for the best team to win and I’m guessing it did. We didn’t watch because we’re not fans of sports.

Love the funny. Yes the weekend went by very quickly.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches to Elsa. ♥

    1. You’re probably right Sandee about the better team part. Hard to say when you’re a fan and your team looses. As always thanks for sharing our link. You’re too kind. Happy Monday.

  18. I just caught the tail end of the game…the exciting part! My husband has had seizures (diagnosed late in life) but fortunately his meds control it. Always a worry though.

    1. Elsa is the second dog I’ve owned who had epilepsy (although a few of the dogs I grew up with also had seizures now that I think about it). With the two family members also experiencing seizures, this condition is always front and center in my mind. Sending positive thoughts to your husband and all who experience this stigmatizing health condition. 💜

        1. To some extent, that’s true, but I know a long time blogger who suffered from seizures all her life as well.

    1. {snicker} I don’t think I’ve heard a more diplomatic thought about the big game. Well done. Our society has become so polarized it’s a shame we can’t enjoy a sporting event without it becoming something blown all out of proportion. Happy Monday.

  19. As the saying goes, “Monday happens.” 😉. Great game but not the outcome we were hoping for at the Golden K. Life long Niner fans -but not necessarily NFL fans – (that’s a rant for another day) – we were disappointed. The stress level was too much for Kloe and Koda by the end of the first quarter and passed out and slept the rest of the game. But in the end we know it’s just a game. I can say that because….. [wait for it…] pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Thursday and full team five days later. 49ers who?! Let’s Go SF Giants- we’re tied for first for st least another 6 weeks!

Have a great week at The Ranch!

    1. As our the proverbial basement residing Rockies! I thought about you when a saw a few FB posts during the Super Bowl game. I was just glad Brady and his crew weren’t playing, although I couldn’t believe he was featured in that ridiculous Dunkin Donut ad. WTH?

        1. Amen! Being a cheater and possessing that smug look on his face have always rubbed me wrong.

    1. The time change is murder on European and Australian sports fans during US championship games. Sleeping in seems like a reasonable thing, especially on Monday! 😊

    1. It’s a horrible condition and my heart goes out to anyone who is impacted by it. I consider Elsa one of the lucky ones for the most part-her seizures have luckily been managed but I’m always concerned the anti-seizure meds may impact her liver and kidneys. Sending thoughts of comfort to you about Sophie. 💜

  20. Nope, no football here. We avoided it completely. Epilepsy is a nasty thing. We don’t know anyone who has it, but Mom has a sad memory of it. When she first started Junior High, eons ago, she made friends with a girl and then only a couple days into the school year, she had a seizure going into the lunchroom and actually died. Mom was there and saw it all. She was too young to know what really happened and why, but she still sees that video play in her head when she thinks about it. Take care of yourself.

    1. Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. That can’t have been an easy thing to experience. In addition to Elsa’s diagnosis, I have a couple of family members who have experienced inexplicable seizures. It’s definitely no picnic in the park though they both seem to be doing well now.

  21. The Niners were as close to winning that game as a team can get. I do not like San Fran but I feel for Shanahan. That impossibly heart breaking loss to the Patriots after being up by 25. The loss to KC four years ago after being up by 10 and then last night. It shows you how hard it is to win this thing.

As for Mahomes, you can’t give the kid a chance because that’s usually what happens.

The State Farm commercial and the Oreos spot made me laugh.

Here’s to the warriors and the families such as your own who fight the good fight every day.

    1. Yeah, I would have felt badly for whoever lost-both teams had the potential for it being a heartbreak. Not a fan of SF but at least they weren’t the Pats or a heretofore nameless QB we both loathe. As a longtime Bronco fan, KC & Mahomes specifically have made our lives pretty miserable over the years, they did lose against the Blue and Orange this season. Guess when you don’t have a personal interest, you don’t care one way or the other. That State Farm commercial made me laugh out loud. That one was pretty clever but admit I tend to tune out anything Kardashian on general principles. 😈

At least there were loads of winners from the Puppy Bowl. Happy Monday, Marc!

      1. The Chiefs made a franchise altering decision when they moved up to draft Mahomes. It’s funny but the scouting report on him was that he was super talented but erratic. The critique on him was that he had the tendency to play hero ball. He’s really buttoned things up though and to his credit, he’s quickly making people forget that other guy.

Yeah I wasn’t crazy about the Kardashian appearance myself.

        To the Puppy Bowl!

        Have a great Monday, Monika.

        1. Ditching Alex Smith and Marty Schottenheimer set the winning stage for the Chief’s. Until this year’s contest, Mahomes & Reid have kicked Bronco’s patootie, much to the chagrin of Bronco fans. Although it’s hard to imagine a franchise more loathed than the Raiders, the Chief’s have moved up the roster-their fans are really annoying in the stands.

          1. I know if we want any chance of beating the Chiefs in the playoffs next season, we have to get home field . . . . and then we have to give Mahomes the wrong directions to the stadium.

            1. That ‘might’ be the only solution. He is some kind of player and not anything like that nameless No. 12 we both loathe. Even if I despise his team, he seems like a good kid.

Feel free to bark your thoughts...but no growling please.
