Nature Friday ~ March 1, 2024

It’s time for another Nature Friday post. Holy canine…it may be the first of March already but it won’t stop us from joining our pals at Adventures of the LLB Gang. Be sure to click on the highlighted link to see what other posts were shared.

Elsa on sofaElsa: 🎶 humming and singing 🎶  Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo-doo…here comes the sun, 🎶 and…oh, Hiya. It’s me, Elsa…just chillaxing on the sofa this morning…

Wilson: {interrupting} Blimey, how come you are allowed to get up on the sofa and Mum always makes me get down?

Elsa: It’s simple, dog breath, I. am. me. and I’m a Ninja. I think they’re called special rights and I was grandfathered in. You’re just the new guy. You have to earn those privileges though I’m certain that ain’t happening any time soon…not only are you the new guy but you’re a gigantic, new guy. There are different rules for the likes of you.

Wilson: I say, that doesn’t seem fair at all. I’m gonna go ask Mum for a clarification. {gallops into other room hollering} Oh Mum…how come Elsa gets to get up on the sofa and I don’t?

The Mom: ELSA!!  Get down…NOW! You’re not supposed to be (a) jumping up while you’re still recovering and (b) you’re not supposed to get up on the furniture. Period.

Elsa: Wait, I’m not supposed to get up on the furniture? When did that rule go into effect.

The Mom: Remember, I’m trying to train Wilson from getting up on the furniture and decided it was better to make the sofa and my bed off limits to both of you.

Elsa: Well that’s just dumb. I never agreed to that and besides, I’m feeling pretty good recovery wise so there’s no need to not let me get up on the sofa.

The Mom: Beg to differ missy; I’m the boss. The current rule in place is that no dog shall be allowed on the furniture.

Elsa: {grumbling} Well color me unhappy about that rule. {turning toward Wilson} Way to go spoiling things, blabbermouth.

Wilson: W-h-a-t?? I just asked for clarification with the hope of fairness.

Elsa: Considering I am recovering because of you, I might add, I should be allowed special privileges. Way to put the kibosh on my freedoms, fur ball. Harrumph!

Wilson: {contrite} Sorry, didn’t mean to get you in trouble. So shall we soldier on and share some views of Mother Nature from around our neighborhood? I say…we’ve experienced the gamut of weather and nature this week.

Elsa: No kidding. First there was the Snow Moon…Mom of course was too lazy didn’t grab her big camera [in fairness, the battery needed to be charged so I’ll forgive her this time] and she used her cell phone as it was setting early in the morning. This was the best she could do given the limitations of the phone camera and tall trees blocking our view.

Snow moon

Wilson: I contemplated howling at it but then thought better of it. Mum keeps telling me I’m not supposed to bark in the house and I’m working hard on learning better self-control behavior now that I’ve found my voice.

Elsa: Apart from the blaring decibels, you’re not a wolf, new guy.

Wilson:  Well there is that too. And as the new guy, can I just say the weather around here sure does a lot of vacillating. One minute it’s lovely and warm and the next it’s snowy and cold. The ducks didn’t seem to mind but let’s just say I prefer it less wet and chilly.

Snowy pond

Elsa: Jeez, you’re such a wuss! It’s bracing and refreshing.

Elsa in snow

Wilson: {Shivering} To each his own, eh? But the day after the snow squall, Mum and I noticed elements of spring trying to emerge. We saw more blooming bulbs. These little lovelies were quite colorful and I for one, love their stripes.

Crocuses

Elsa: Those are crocuses. They’re often the first of the spring bulbs to bloom. Here’s a solid purple version and a pic with  another daffodil and crocus.

Crocuses

Daffodil & crocuses

Wilson: I say, those are quite grand! They didn’t seem to be any worse for the wear after yet another snow storm arrived. It seems like every other day that white stuff falls around here.

Snow

Elsa: Boy do you have a lot to learn about gardening in the Mile High City. If you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes. Snow doesn’t seem to bother these guys-I’ve seen them completely buried and yet they’ll still bloom. Look at these reticulated irises and the first of the baby blue grape hyacinths. Mom loves them both and always shouts when she catches first glimpses of those hyacinths.

Wilson: I know! We were just returning from a long walk when she caught sight of something blue and tiny before we got to the gate. I was worried by those squeals and thought I had to protect her.

Irises

Grape hyacinths

Elsa: She was likely more worried that your gigantic ‘hooves’ would squash them. You do tend to plow through stuff rather unceremoniously.

Wilson: I beg your pardon…I’m as delicate stepping about as any sheepdog.

Elsa: I rest my case, Big Foot.

Wilson: {disappointed at the criticism} I might be large but I do have feelings and now you’ve gone and hurt them.

Elsa: Oh please…you’re a big oaf…own it dude.

Wilson: I’m sure I’ll recover…with the proper treat to console my bruised feelings.

Elsa: {eyes rolling} Oh brother. Never fear, the treats will continue to flow your way, for whatever reason. Especially when you go to Grandpa’s house next week. I swear the whole family spoils you rotten. I don’t get it.

Wilson: What’s not to get, I’m a handsome bloke who loves people and they love me.

Elsa: Hmm, is that so? I’m a bit selective although I really do love people. I just make them earn my attention without having to flaunt it.

Wilson: Trust me on this, sister…you catch more flies with a wiggly bum and soft puppy eyes. I mean not many people can resist this face.

Wilson

Elsa: {eyes rolling at the shameless pose} If you say so. We hope you have a great weekend and hope Nature delivers more early signs of spring. Make sure you get outside to enjoy it and have a great weekend.

    1. Wilson says thank you very much. When your altitude is a mile high, the sun encourages bulbs to seek the light. I’m always stunned when they begin to bloom especially with the snowstorms this past month.

  1. You two are such a hoot! Dang, that snow sure looks cold. Those flowers are beautiful and we are sure ready for Blooming Season here!

    1. Thanks; we’re trying very hard to please Mom by handling these Friday posts. The new guy makes it hard some days but we’re figuring it out. Thanks for swinging by; we 💙 the company. Your fur-iends, Elsa & new guy, Wilson 🐾

  2. Oh my, Wilson, I sure can’t resist that face! *google eyes* Lucy
    Xena: I’m callin’ Achilles.
Lucy: *clears throat and shakes head* Sorry, just a temporary lapse.
Chia: I wanna come and play in your snow and jump on your furniture. I’m so fast, no one could catch me, BOL!!

    1. Chia…sweet girl. Playing in snow is fine. Getting up on furniture (wet, dry or otherwise) is not. I’m re-learning that house rule. Mom is such a tyrant!

Lucy…you’re welcome to gaze into Wilson’s eyes any ole time. We won’t tell Achilles.

Have a wagnificant weekend, guys. It’s sunny and nice here so Mom may even take us to Sloan’s Lake to chase, err observe the Canadian Geese. 😉

  3. Good to see Elsa is back to her spritely self. The sarcasm never left. As for Wilson, he’s right about those soft puppy eyes, they win every time.

    Here’s to more snow moon and less . . umm . . . snow?

    1. Mom has been blown away by my progress and I’m even impressing her with my stamina on walks. It feels good to be back. Hey, snow isn’t all bad…it makes such tasty snowcones. 😂 Have a great weekend.

  4. Ok Wilson and Elsa – you two can bicker and snicker with each other BUT you are still FAMILY and I know eventually you’ll be BESTIES if you aren’t “secretly” already besties. Anyway, looks like Spring is trying to get there even if Spring is WHITE (snow) once in a while. We see SOME signs here but it’s still cold and windy and I hate wind – it messes up my fur (hahahahaha).

    Hugs, Teddy

    1. Us bicker? Nah…just good ole fashioned sibling rivalry going on here. White is a good color in spring, especially as it doesn’t last long and provides a soothing beverage to the landscape. You’re so right about the wind, Teddy…it’s the worst. We are no fans of windy conditions either. We hope spring starts making some noise in your ‘Hood soon.

  5. We had a dump of snow here too, after violent weather following a Feb heat wave this past Tuesday. We have tulips coming through the ground, but it’s a longways off till they bloom. Our grape hyacinths are just now showing their buds if they are in sheltered areas. They are all over our yard! Sometimes wonder if they practice spontaneous generation. LOL! Crocuses?? I think the tree rats gobbled them up/. Sigh…Our snowdrops were blooming when they got buried under the snow and 18F temps…but those hardy little ones are still blooming prettily!

Be careful of your healing up, Elsa, you don’t want bedrest again…and yes, Wilson, you melt my heart too…
can you teach us pups how to howl?? We only know bark! MJF was good at howling whenever he heard a siren, but not another time, even when the violin here came out of hiding, and the recorder too. We seem to like louder voices…to the consternation of our neighbors, sometimes, BOL! We never got to hear the organ…and its no longer in ur house, as *she* donated it to a young man who was learning it.

    1. The tulips here are just breaking ground too. They’re pretty but boy are they primadonnas! What’s up with that? Give us some daffodils or crocuses any day. And our Mom HAS to get some snowdrops this autumn-she loves those but never remembers to plant them. Sheesh. Wilson says he wants to conduct online classes on how to find one’s voice. You guys can take notes. It’s easy. OES’s have a particularly loud bark that sounds like it’s echoing from a filled pot rack! Holy racket.

    1. Thanks. They’re just starting. It helps when you’re at altitude. 😎

    1. And we’re ready for it! Although I know there will be a few spring storms between now and May (or at least I sure hope so 😉).

  6. Sounds like the pups are managing to mostly get along! We’ve had wild changes of weather too, a temperature drop of about 25 degrees from one day to the next. The body just can’t get acclimated, though it doesn’t seem to bother the dogs much

    1. Dogs always roll with the weather. Yeah, those 25-45 degree shifts make your head spin. Hope things begin to level out in your town.

    1. Ta y. She’s doing well and we’re very optimistic about her recovery. Have a great weekend.

  7. The crocus and Iris are quite beautiful. This is a reward for having to put up with snow. We never have those so it was a treat seeing them. Have a super weekend all of you.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the crocus/iris show. It’s pretty great today & is the first weekend that it hasn’t snow. Woohoo for us!

  8. The weather has been sooooo fickle! We didn’t get any precip, but we did get some strong chilly winds. Yet today, the winds are gone and it’s sunny and looking to be 70 degrees.

    1. Fickle…boy that’s an understatement! First weekend in a month where it hasn’t snowed…it’s got my days totally discombobulated! 🤣

  9. Yup, your eyes got me, Wilson! Elsa, you may need some lessons from Wilson on how to get attn.LOL!
Annnd, I don’t think you owe him any treats for ” bruising ” his ego. After all, he squealed on you. It’s even. 😉
Pretty flowers. A promise of what’s to come!
Happy weekend, Enjoy! And listen to your mom, no jumping. ButI bet you can get some treats by being good!😇

    1. Those stripped ones always make me squeal! So vivid, so pretty. Happy spring-ish weather!

    1. LOL, even when he does a side eye, I get all jiggly with emotion He’d make a very successful blackmailer.

    1. That’s what everyone says. If only they know what lies behind those eyes.
      Your fur-iend,
      Elsa, the aggrieved 🤣

  10. Java Bean: “Ayyy, we are all allowed up on the furniture here, but the weird thing is that Lulu never does it. She just stays on the floor.”
Lulu: “That’s because with my thick furs, the cushions and fabric make me too warm. Unlike that snow. I would looooooovvvvveeee to go play in that snow!”
    Java Bean: “Brrrrr!”

    1. Come on down, Lulu-us girls could romp in the snowflakes to our hearts content. Bean and Norman can watch us from inside. Happy weekend.

  11. oooh we love this purple guys… can you lease sing louder and louder Elsa? we need sun, we are on the way to exchange the black maria for a boat… a happy weekend to the ranch :o)

    1. Oh no, more rain? We hope you guys dry out soon. It’s clear blue skies today and will probably have windy conditions to melt the ice built-up in shady spots. Mother Nature has a demented sense of humor. Have a pawsome (and dry) weekend.

  12. I know, I know, it’s different up in the mountains, closer to the sun… Still. I would love to see crocuses now, too!
Mind you, it’s the first time since I can remember that my lawn is snow-free in February. Well, yes it’s March today but all last week, I watched it disappear completely. Front AND back (which was all the more surprising!)
Have a great Friday and March 1st!

    1. Happy first day of March! Yes, those colorful crocuses made us smile. Still have a few spots of snow on northern exposures but it’s going fast. Been windy and in the 60’sF. Crazy for this time of year. Have a great weekend.

      1. How can they not?
Yesterday was SO cold and windy. I cannot believe that this week we will be seeing 59!
It’s been a crazy beginning of the year.
        Thanks! Will do my best!

        1. I can deal with it all…except the stupid wind. It makes me very crabbish. Here’s to more moderate and seasonal weather. 🤞🏼
