Nature Friday ~ May 31, 2024

Nature FridayWelcome to this week’s edition of Nature Friday. It is really the last Friday of May? Yikes, how in the world has this month zipped by so quickly? Elsa and the House Pony here with a special edition of Nature Friday where we’re going to share photos of Mom’s recent trip to the Iris Farm. As always, we are joining our pals from Adventures of the LLB Gang. Don’t forget to click on the link to see what other posts were shared.

Elsa: Ok House Pony, let’s see how you do this week. It’s going be different from our usual bevy of miscellany from around the ‘Hood since we’re only going to be featuring photos from Mom’s visit last weekend to the Iris4U Farm in the heart of the city How do you feel about that?

Wilson: I’m quite the affable chap so it’s no problem for me. We talked about this at our weekly editor’s meeting. I’m chuffed to feature pics of those beauties which Mum says that this year’s crop are the prettiest she’s ever seen.

Elsa: Well, if you okay with it. I thought maybe you might find it limiting since you tend to be a bit on the wild side.

Wilson: I am decidedly not wild. I am merely a youthful sheepdog who is most enthusiastic about life.

Elsa: Uh-huh. You say tomato, I say to-mah-to. Well, let’s get to it, dude.

Wilson: Mum met up with with her granddaughter and the new baby. I could tell because I could smell new baby all over her when she came home. Mum said she’s becoming quite the little blossom herself. I know we agreed to only share images of the irises, but come on…is her latest documentation pic just the cutest! Woof! and look at that smile and those chubby arms and legs.

Halia

Elsa: Boy, she sure is cute. Sure hope we get to meet her in person soon. She looks like she could use a puppy kiss…or two.

Wilson: I know, right? Well, I know Mum is pretty keen on her and so is everyone else who sees her but I’m sure it’ll be soon. I mean how long can they hold out not sharing her with us?

Elsa: Oh man, you don’t know moms, do you?

Wilson: Umm, I guess not, when you say it like that. Well, let’s move on to the flowers this week. When it comes to irises Mum is always partial to the dark purple ones but the black irises…well she started swooning and banging on so much I thought I’d have to administer CPR.
Black iris

Elsa: Whoa…that’s one very striking and unusual iris. I’m guessing Mom placed an order immediately. She can’t refuse coveting those black ones.

Wilson: She’s been combing through the online catalog and can’t decide but will eventually. Plus I’m sure she’ll go back again this week when the farm should be in peak view. I’m sure she’ll get it or one of the other black ones. There’s nothing like that around the “Ranch.”

Elsa: I can see why she’s so gaga over them. What other notables did she see?

Wilson: Well, let me just tell you. This close-up of one of the more striking ones, hit quite a note with Mum. I mean just look at that color. It just screams fabulous, doesn’t it?

Iris

Elsa: What? I can’t hear you…the color of that iris is too loud.

Wilson: Right! That shock of purple fringing the ‘beard’ was really something.

Elsa: Well I know for a fact that some of our readers are big fans of orangey colored flowers. Got anything for them?

Wilson: Indeed I do. Here are two that were especially lovely and had gorgeous ruffles around their edges. The ‘beard’ on the first one was particularly vivid.

Orange iris

Orange Iris
Elsa: Oooh…pretty. Any other unusual entries? Come on, House Pony, wow me some more.

Wilson: Well, beyond the traditional (yet still quite lovely) varieties, there was this one. Mum thought the contrast in the pale to the striking color was pretty sensational. I can just see her running around ‘oohing and ahhing.’ She probably resembled a bumblebee flitting from one row to the next after some smashing color caught her eye.

Iris

Elsa: Wow, just wow. Now that’s what I’m talking about. What else you got, big guy?

Wilson: There were so many pretty blooms, it was hard to narrow it down. Here’s a lovely pink and purple combo with a shockingly bright ‘beard.’

Iris Elsa: Holy flowers, Batman! That ‘beard’ is very bright!

Wilson: Ay, it sure was. Here are a few more that caught Mum’s eye.

Elsa: I can see why Mom is struggling trying to narrow down selections from the catalog. With this being the last season Iris4U will be open, there are a lot of decisions she’s going to have to make. I’d hate to be in her shoes.

Wilson: Yeah, she’s going to have to make some tough choices. And this weekend she’s going to be busy getting ready for the annual sheepdog picnic.

Elsa: Oh yeah, that’s coming up soon, isn’t it? There’s lots to do around the Ranch for it and hope that whatever your weekend has in store for you, it’s a weekend where you can get out and enjoy the bounty of Nature as we continue to move toward summer good times. Happy Weekend, folks.

Wilson: Right-o. What she said. ⬆️ Have a super weekend!

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. Java Bean: “Ayyy, that is one cute baby for sure!”
Chaplin: “None of us have any experience with babies, but Dennis told us that Tucker told him that babies are good for giving kisses to.”
    Lulu: “Because they are sweet?”
Chaplin: “In Tucker’s case I think it was because they tend to get food all over themselves, but sure, because they’re sweet.”

    1. Aww, thank you. Bwahahaha about the sweetness observation…yup, they do tend to need a lot of clean up which is perfect for pupster tongues.

  2. What a lot of cuteness Halia is and she already has the sweetest smile of all. We sure hope you can sniff her soon, Wilson and Elsa, and we hope she smells like milk and butter, Granny says they all do, that means hours of smelling pleasure😹The irisses are beautiful, we love all the colours. Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to all of you🐾😽💞

    1. We totally agree-babies smell so yummy. We hope the rest of your weekend is pawsome!

***nose bopss*** BellaDharma an (((hugss))) BellaSita Mum

    1. Thank you! Yes those black ones are really amazing. Good that your Mum ‘only’ wants two of every color! 🤣

  4. We love all the bright loud colors. Mom is a fan of tons of color. She says color makes for happiness, all the black and brown people wear these days makes for a sad, depressing look. We only have bright colored flowers around our house.

    1. Color is another way Nature brings us smiles. Here’s to a weekend of color and happiness.

  5. WOWZERS…….cute baby photo AND gorgeous iris photos in the same post? The beauty is almost too much to take!!!! Tee Hee……I hope you get to meet her in person soon. Those irises are simply amazing – all of that in one place is almost overwhelming in person we imagine. Get bulbs while you can…….!

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

    1. Thanks Pam and Teddy. We keep hoping they bring the baby soon but understand how complicated it is going anywhere with a newborn. Now if only we can get Mom to decide on which irises she absolutely needs. Decisions, decisions. Have a super weekend that’s full of color and beauty.

  6. Such a beautiful selection of Iris’s…it really is sad the farm is closing, but are glad your Mom is going to plant a selection of her own!
    xoxo,
    Sunny & Rosy

    1. Thanks. Now to just decide which ones can I afford 🤣 Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks on both! It’s hard to fault your thinking. 😆 Hope you and Chester have a great weekend.

    1. That’s so much. Yep, I have to agree on both counts! Wishing you and all the kitties a peaceful and relaxing weekend.

    1. She’s a cutie, no doubt about it. I told her dad to keep an eye on that heartbreaker! Have a great weekend!

    1. Thank you! Black irises have captivated me for more than 20 years. We don’t see them often but when we do…oh gosh-they take my breath away. Enjoy a fabulous weekend.

  7. The week just flew by, just as did the month… yikes!
Very adorable GGD you have there, growing like a weed. 🙂
Those iris are gorgeous… I don’t think I’d be able to choose just one or two!

    1. Thanks. Try as I may, I can’t seem to reduce the number of items in my cart 🤣

        1. That’s the other problem with an ever burgeoning cart of plants and next week the heat arrives. I can’t do garden in 90 degrees even with low humidity. 😉

  8. Your New Baby is a joy to behold!!
And the flowers are too. Wowee!
Here we have some ordinary purple ones, inherited from previous owners, as well as a bunch of white ones. And in the back we have some very old ones, they are yellow and brown…I think they too came from previous owners. The miniature ones (Flags?), all disappeared, like from the likes of hungry rodents…sigh…they used to be so pretty early in the spring.
All our irises have about finished their blooming and are soon to fade from the warm ups we will be having next week.

    1. Aww thanks for the kind comment. Our Mum likes ‘flags’ because they’re indestructible and the squirrels leave them alone. Hope you have a great weekend and don’t have to work too much.

          1. 😉 Never a problem. Lord knows I make enough typos myself. Anyway, it was a quick fix. 😉

  9. OMG! Those irises are spectacular! (as is the grandbaby!) I have blue and yellow, fairly traditional ones. There were some peach irises here when I moved but they were in deep shade, didn’t bloom profusely and looked very faded so they got rehomed.

    1. Thank you! I love any Iris that is untraditional and those were some remarkable contenders. I gotta winnow down my cart which is dangerously overflowing with beautiful choices.

      1. One of the owners before me planted a lot of Siberian irises which bloomed last week. So beautiful. Huge patches of blue swaying in the breeze. I’m trying NOT to add any more plantings.

        1. It’s hard to resist planting more when they’re so beautiful, isn’t it?

  10. Those flowers are truly spectacular, Elsa and Wilson. It’s tough to pick out the most worthy ones to order…since they are all worthy. I am sure you’ll help Mom make those tough calls. I am also sure you’ll have an access pass to the g-grandbaby soon, but in the meantime have a super-swell weekend.🙂

    1. Thanks, Bruce! It’s gonna be a tough decision for our Mom to figure which ones she absolutely can’t live without. We’ve got our paws crossed on the baby access pass. Have a great weekend.

    1. It has been a spectacular year for all spring flowers! Here’s hoping your weekend matches that.

  11. The baby is simply adorable! <3 Hang in there Elsa and Wilson!
Oh your mom does have a hard decision to make. Just buy them all! LOL! I think I like the peach ruffle ones and yellow ones the best. But the pink and purple combo is beautiful as well. <3
Happy Weekend to all of you at the ranch!
I am feeling better than I have been so thanks for the thoughts and prayers sent my way. 🙂

    1. Thank you. Mom is ‘sorta’ biased but she just can’t get enough of her and wants to share her every chance she gets.

Yes, Mom’s cart is quite overflowing; the bank is ready to reel her in. LOL Have a great weekend and enjoy feeling better!

  12. What a darling grand baby! That smile is a winner!
Years ago I put a limit on the number of stray irises that my husband could bring home. But after seeing your photos, I may have to reconsider …

    1. Thanks, Amy. Can you ever really have too many irises in our climate? 😉

  13. What glorious irises Monika, thank you so much for sharing! 🧡 Wishing you all a blessed weekend too 🤗❤🐕 xxx

    1. Many thanks, Debra. We realize we’re biased but am always glad when others confirm our delight. This has been such a spectacular year for the bearded irises and these just underscore that observation. Have a terrific weekend. Ear scritches for Miss Gracie and tummy rubs for Ace.

  14. Wow and another Wow and here… WOW! Those irises are spectacular. They are a far cry from the dull yellow and purplish ones I see around here. I was kinda on the fence if I even like them or not. However, seeing this selection changes my mind completely. Excellent job of presenting, Elsa & Wilson!

    1. Thanks. They really are something to behold. Guess you can see why it’s gonna be a real dilemma picking just a couple. Have a spectacular weekend.

  15. What wonderful irises! Worth breaking the bank and ordering all you can if the farm is closing.
And what a lovely little girl!

    1. Thanks ever so, Helen. Yeah mom is trying hard to be reasonable about her choices but I’m not sure she can demonstrate self control. Baby Halia continues to charm us all. Do have a lovely weekend.
