Nature Friday ~ January 16, 2026

Wilson-sleeping dogIt’s Friday and you know what that means…it’s time for another edition of Nature Friday where we join our friends from at Adventures of the LLB GangDon’t forget to click on the link to see what others shared for their Nature Friday blog hop. Wilson here with a light version of the Nature we encountered this week since we really didn’t see much beyond what we’ve shared before. I mean how many gorgeous sunrises can you stand, huh? Well this one was quite a showstopper with a sliver of the moon showing, but still. Anyway, Mum’s been busy trying to finish unpacking the studio and arranging it so the large space is efficient and easily accessible but she is struggling with moving furniture around. I think she’s come to realize she isn’t a spring chicken anymore. She got another bright idea yesterday that will require more moving. I can hear the sighs, grunts and groans already. Good thing I know how to help.

Sunrise

The Mum: Good morning, lad. Are you trying to blame me for a shortage of nature photos this week?

Wilson: Ooh, hiya  Mum. Nope, no blaming, just stating facts. You’ve been busy and we didn’t have a lot of different encounters with the landscape unlike the pics you’ve already posted from the past month. Critter-wise, mostly we’ve only seen Canadian geese-thousands of them in fact. Apart from them being everywhere when we walk through the golf course area, they are just flat boring. Honk, honk, honk. Don’t they ever do anything beyond honk?

The Mum: Good question; if they do, I sure don’t know what, if any redeeming qualities they have, that would be considered share worthy. We did see a few mallards earlier this week after last week’s snow had melted but they weren’t all that keen on our presence and skedaddled quickly. But watching them float around on the canal was very peaceful and there were some interesting reflections on the water from the branches. But the landscape is more than colorless this time of year. Just drab brown everywhere with lots of wind. There’s another high wind warning for today and proposed power cuts for northern Colorado.

Mallard ducks

Wilson: Yeah, those ducks were boring to me and they weren’t interested in how fabulous I am. Now if squirrels were swimming in the canal, they’d have my full and undivided attention. Heck, I might even jump in the water.

The Mum: Ha…that’ll be the day. You avoid water like the plague and I can’t believe you’d jump into the water, even for squirrels.

Wilson: {protesting} Now Mum, you know I’m totally obsessed into checking out squirrels and will follow them wherever they go. I don’t know why but there’s something quite captivating about those scurrying little troublemakers.

The Mum: Yeah, I do know. All too well. This week the sheepie stubbornness was on parade, front and center. So much so, that you and I had to have a couple of heart to heart conversations. What’s up with that, anyway?

Wilson: [nonchalantly rolling his eyes] I have no idea what you’re talking about. I mean, just look at this devoted, compliant face of a good dog. I mean, ‘who’s a good boy?’ Huh?

Wilson

The Mum: Don’t give me that “I’m such a good boy look. You conveniently forgot to mention it took several minutes to get you in this pose. You acted like you were deaf.

Wilson:  Umm, I don’t think it took more than the usual pocket of bribes treats.

The Mum: Uh-huh. You can say it, but that doesn’t necessarily make it true.

Wilson: {deftly changing the topic} Well, will you check this out! On our daily morning walk, we sashayed past a particular house on the way to the Ralston Creek Trail and I noticed you said out loud…”what the…” and promptly turned me around to go back and confirm what you thought you saw. You know I have a pinched nerve in my neck, right?

Rose budding

The Mum: Oh puleese…you weren’t hurt and seemed more than happy to check it out. I was blown away that this rose bush had started budding out. I know it’s been super mild with temps in the 50’sF and 60’sF (10C – 15C) but it’s WAY too soon for deciduous plants to start setting buds. I mean winter officially started less than a month ago and we haven’t had much in the way of winter moisture…but dang.

Wilson: It is rather surprising and of course, with all the windy conditions, even more shocking. I don’t know what to make of it, Mum.

The Mum: Me either, House Pony. It’s definitely alarming. But there’s not much we can do but supplement water for the new trees that were planted recently to make sure they get sufficient moisture to establish themselves, even though the landscapers assured us they were dormant. Hope springs eternal, right?

Wilson: Right. Not to change the subject, but I’ve noticed you’ve been checking for quirky garden art on our walks now that we have an established route that we take every day. Hopefully we’ll find more otherwise this is going to be a rather dull neighborhood compared to some of the original stuff we were used to seeing.

Signs

The Mum: Yeah, but I did have to laugh out loud when we walked past this house. So what’s up for your weekend? Got any plans, buddy?

Wilson:  Beyond catching a squirrel…umm, no nothing overly special. We may have a birthday party for your granddaughter who turns the Big 3-0 next week. That out to be fun. What about you readers? Anything? Whatever you do (and I hope staying safe and warm is included in your weekend plans), we hope you have a fantastic weekend that includes checking out nature around your ‘Hood.

    1. Sadly, there are no moles there but I’m sure they’d appreciate you digging the weeds. 😂

  1. MOL! Wilson we watch the Squirrels running around now Olivia isn’t out there pawtrolling the yard. Dot & I, Jerry Underfoot would love if huMom would let us out to. She is laughing because when she left the door open Dot ran upstairs & I got just past the door to eat some grass. HuMom, that’s not funny. I’m writing Wilson & you are making us look bad.
Hope you & Mum had a purrfect weekend.

    Dot & Jerry Underfoot 😻head boops😻

    1. 😂 Wilson said he’d teach you guys a few tricks for patrolling the garden. He said he could make sure you’d catch something. 😉

    1. Not sure about him getting into water, even if it meant bagging a squirrel. I hope to meet the people who live at the “Free Weeds” sign-they seem like they have a great sense of humor. Here’s hoping the weekend has been excellent!

    1. Thanks. Yeah, life has enough weeds in it without picking more but I had to laugh at the sentiment. Hope you’ve had a good weekend.

    1. Hahaha…I should have done that year’s ago. Monetize it-that seems to be the way enterprising ‘influencers’ do it. But I did chuckle when I saw the sign. Seems like the peeps who live there have a sense of humor…a good thing to have these days.

  2. LOL about that sign. I sure could use one around here! Teehee!
Lately I haven’t been moving furniture, but logs. They just keep falling in our yard, usually just big heavy limbs…I sometimes can drag them closer to the burn pile, so that when our friend comes with his chain saws, they are easier to throw on the ever growing pile. I shall have to have a weinie roast! (After the dogs and I make sure no bunnies or birds are in there.)
I liked that image of the mallards. so serene!
And that rose is going to get a rude surprise!!
Wilson, you like Benji are good at looking totally innocent of wrongdoing…he hates to learn any new kind of ;trick’ that involves special posing, like holding a treat on his head, or carrying something in his jaws. (MJF used to love that kind of thing…all B is interested in is destuffing toys, and hunting/digging for moles and yup, chasing the tree rats out of the yard.

    1. Wasn’t it a hoot? My mum howled down the street. She could have used that at her old garden. Bwahaha.

A cold front moved in. This morning’s low was in the mid-teens. Brrrr. I hope the owner protected that rose overnight. I think today’s high will only be in the mid-30’sF but at least the sun is shining and it doesn’t feel so chilly.

Sheepdogs are notorious for being stubborn. Sadly, that’s one reason why a lot of them end up in rescue. They are super sensitive but need a firm hand but Wilson will do better.

A wienie roast…now that sounds pawfect for the weekend! Enjoy and stay warm.

  3. Wilson, you don’t seem any more stubborn than us, and Mommy still loves and feeds us, so don’t worry about it. XOX Xena
Wow, that sunrise is just spectacular! And I just love that Free Weeds sign, LOL! We’re having a party here for Jeff and 4 of his friends who all have a birthday this month. Then there’s the spouses, so we’re going to have a houseful this Saturday!

    1. Sounds like a fun weekend for you guys!

Trust me…sheepdogs have a wide stubborn side and it’s been coming out a lot lately. Who knew dogs could be passive/aggressive? 🤣 Enjoy your weekend!

    1. Thanks, Terry. We had them at our old neighborhood, but never the sheer numbers that are here in the new one. It’s been cold waking up but they still hang out on the golf course and around the water hazards. Talk about noisy buggers! We hope your weekend is cozy and warm. Enjoy!

  4. Geese honk, mallards Zen and Wilson does a little bit of everything else. He’s an entertainer, of that there is no doubt. Now as far as the squirrels habit goes, let’s face it, there are worse things to be hooked on.

Nice and easy does it mama, you’re doing such a fantastic job!

    And that sign, how clever!

    1. As always, many thanks for your observations, Marc. Wilson is nothing if not constantly entertaining. If only my vices were as benign as squirrels. 😂

    1. I can’t wait! I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled at the local birds and critters. We saw our first bunny recently and the babies are incredibly adorable. I am surprised that with all the geese on the course, I haven’t seen more apex predators. Maybe I’m just not seeing them yet but staying hopeful. Love to watch nature at its best.
P.S. I walked around one of the water hazards the other day and my goodness…the geese have really left their ‘mark’ on the course. Yuck! We had to be careful where we stepped! 😱

      1. Yes, the goose issue is really something. My better half was a member of the men’s club and we both spent a lot of time there…the shoes stayed in the garage! I loved walking the course while he played a quick early morning round, especially in the spring. I also remember good Mexican food at the restaurant, wonder if that’s still true!

        1. Do you remember the name of that restaurant? There seem to be a plethora of eating spots here.

Yeah, those geese are pretty gross. I suspect the groundkeepers have a full time job scooping the poop!

  5. You look like such a good boy in that photo sweet Wilson 🥰 and what a wonderful sign for the garden! 😃 Wishing you both a blessed weekend and hope your mum will get some help moving the furniture ❤️ xxx

    1. Thank you, Xenia. We enjoyed the thought of whomever put out that sign. It tickled our funny bone.

  6. When I bought our new dining room table (when we moved here in 2021) I didn’t realize it was made out of mango wood or something weird like that. Dang thing weighs 200 pounds so I can’t move it around like the old cherry one. Won’t do that again (although it’s also unlikely I’ll need to buy another dining room table in my lifetime!).

    1. My preference is real wood, even if it is heavy. But, yeah, I understand. I ordered a media cabinet with a built in electric fireplace and that sucker weighed a blooming ton. That puppy ain’t going anywhere.

  7. Not particularly…which is another reason I was blown away. I’ll try to keep the moving of things civilized and take it slow and easy. Have a great weekend.

  8. Wilson, we feed a couple of local squirrels here, and I think you would enjoy watching them…from a distance, of course. It is nice of you to help The Mum with the moving, as I am sure you sense when she needs to distance herself from it for a bit. Not having regular moisture is a bummer. We had that experience a couple of years ago, and it is not a happy time for nature or wildlife. That weed sign is so funny. You guys celebrate that granddaughter’s birthday, and make sure to have a wonderful trio of days!

    1. Thanks Bruce. Wilson says you’re on his short list if you like squirrels (LOL). He loathes them.

We sure hope we get some snow soon-otherwise it’s gonna be a troubling summer. Have a great weekend.

  9. Love the free weeds sign! How about if your Mom puts you in a harness, attaches you the furniture and you help her slide things into place by pulling and she could push? Hope you find lots of interesting new places to walk at your new place. We have around ten walks that are all around three miles we rotate through. Mom doesn’t like the same routes as she gets bored easily. Have a fun 30 bday weekend. Our niece is 24 today, but no party for us.

    1. Thanks. My mum nearly fell over laughing at that sign. I’ll pass along the suggestion to hitching me up to move furniture. I think Mum will nix it since I tend to get under her feet enough as it is But I’ll see what she says.

We’re sending 24th birthday wishes to your mum’s niece. Sorry there’s no party for you guys.

Mum doesn’t like the same route, but routine walks work best for me until I get completely acclimated to this new neighborhood. We may try walking east instead of west. Mum’s getting pretty over seeing the Canadian geese. Have a super weekend.
      Your fur-iend,
      Wilson 🐾

  10. Great neighborhood report! Know what? Mom and I have a blast reading your posts because they’re fun, interesting and – well – did I say fun???? Anyway, updating us on what’s going on in the new surroundings is cool. Adjusting to change isn’t all that easy to do (my Mom says she’s only going to do adjusting one more time….into some kind of 55+ place somewhere!)……….I tell her “whither thou go-est I shall go too!” and Dad of course. Nothing around here is budding yet – it’s 31 for a high today and snow tomorrow. Buds? No buds other than the Budweisers Dad has in the refrigerator.

Hugs and love, Teddy (Under Mom’s supervision)

    1. Thank you. So glad you guys enjoy our silly posts. Learning all about the new neighborhood is kind of fun, at least for Mum.

It’ low 30’sF for us today as the high. This past week it had been in the upper 50’s so Mum is having to wear a coat when I want to go out at night or early morning for the last/first constitutional.

We hope it’s a long while before you Mum and Dad go to a 55+ community. We love your porch.

Bwahahaha…Mum cracked up at the bud reference. You crack us up, clever Teddy. Have a super weekend.

  11. It’s FREEZING here! Wind chill of -27C (-17F). But! The sun is shining and the sky is blue and I think I will bundle up and go out there later…

    Love that sign! Too funny.

And um… have you no peeps in your entourage who could help you schlep your furniture around?

I’m going to a concert tomorrow night with a girlfriend. A wonderful Canadian band that’s been around forever called Blue Rodeo. As for the rest? Rest!

    1. Windy and chilly here today too. And cloudy so it feels cooler. Yesterday it was in the upper 50’s and has been there all month long except the day that it snowed. We’ve gotten so used to 50’s and 60’s.

My son who lives about 20 miles away but he’s busy a lot of the time. We haven’t meet many of the neighbors yet (just a couple of single women) but Mum will figure it out. She’s not ready to chuck it in just yet.

Enjoy that concert tomorrow. Sounds like fun! And have a super walk. Hugs and tail wiggles.

  12. I have a gazillion squirrels around here Wilson! Come over for some more if you can~ One of my roses seems to have set a few buds! You’re looking handsome today!

    1. Thanks, Carole. Roses budding in January at our elevation is just bizarre! So are squirrels, says Wilson. Have a super weekend and stay warm. It’s gonna be more seasonal but back in the upper 40’s/low 50’s next week. Yay.

    1. Thanks, Martha. Isn’t that a hoot? Wilson is learning to ‘parkour’ on stumps/logs, benches and the like but some days he feigns ignorance. I call it stubbornness but he just blinks and looks cute. ☺️ Have a great weekend!

    1. It cracked me up. It was hard to read the first time as I walked past it and took me a few times to find it again. I made sure to take a pic once I found it again. Too funny. I want to get to know those folks! Have a swell weekend-stay warm.

  13. The cold has come rushing back for us as well, with windchills below zero. Waiting for a bit warmer temps this afternoon to try a walk. At least the wood stove is making it nice inside! Have a great weekend. 🙂

    1. A nice fire comes in handy on these cold days. Here’s hoping you stay cozy and warm this weekend.

  14. Is that rose in a particularly sheltered spot?
Take it easy moving heavy things around – and not just Wilson.
