Monday Musings ~ February 2, 2026

Happy Monday, peeps. Welcome to the first Monday in February. Today is known as Groundhog Day where millions of people turn to a rodent to predict whether or not winter will be extended for another six weeks or not. Falling midway between the shortest day of the year. This tradition comes from a medieval Catholic holiday, Candlemas held on February 2, but the science behind it is questionable at best. In Germany, it was believed that when a badger emerged from its den, if it saw its shadow, it would return to said den, signaling six more weeks of winter. In the 1700s German immigrants brought this custom with them when they settled in Pennsylvania but changed the animal with the native and abundant, groundhog (or woodchuck) as the forecaster of spring’s arrival rather than a badger.

The first “official” Groundhog Day took place in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and was organized by a local newspaper editor, Clymer Freas. A group of hunters known as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club was formed and well…here we are…relying on a rodent to let us know if winter will continue. Whether you believe in this long-standing custom, I’m sure many believe they couldn’t do any worse than the local weather forecast.

In keeping with our custom to enjoy a smile or two on Mondays, we have a few offerings today. We hope they make you smile even if it’s nearly certain Phil will see his shadow and the prediction of six more weeks of winter will follow. Hmmm, how convenient…it coincides with the calendar’s announcement that spring arrives on March 20th (in 45 days for those keeping track). Hang on peeps, spring is coming.

  1. An excellent explanation. Spring starts in six weeks anyway, but if the groundhog sees the shadow because it’s a sunny day, the weather from now until then will be dreary and if it’s a dreary day and he sees no shadow, you’ll have mild weather for the six weeks. At least, that was the theory. As you say, it’s no worse than any other weather prediction system.

    1. Thank you. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, groundhogs have to be related to squirrels and we all know what mischief makers they are. 😉 Have a great rest of the week.

    1. Sorry, I cannot trust any rodent to properly predict the weather or season. The calendar will do just fine, even if I wish it’d be quicker. But no point wishing one’s life away, eh? 😁

  2. Well we are hoping for a BREAK in the freezing cold – so maybe some of this ice that surrounds us will melt. We can’t even walk in our own yard with the ice everywhere. We’re actually supposed to get above freezing here today – hopefully that happens!!! We don’t know Siri – maybe that’s a good thing?? haha

    Hugs, Teddy

    1. Here’s hoping lots of that awful ice melts…STAT.

Trust me, you’re not missing much by not knowing Siri.

  3. For us it’s all clear, Winter is still here….whatever the groundhog says😹 Those funnies are so funny, we MOLled especially on the last one 😀 Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to you and Wilson too🐾😽💞

    1. Winter seems to be hanging on in most places. Or in our case, winter thinks it’s a yo-yo. Cold one day, warm the next. While I don’t mind cold…so long as the sky is sunny. Have a geat week!

  4. No matter what Phil says, we ALWAYS have 6 more weeks of winter (and sometimes beyond). Thanks for the laughs, and coincidentally, I did happen to take my Christmas swag off the mailbox today, ha! 😀

    1. Hahaha! I took my Christmas cards down today too. I only left them up because the post office has been forwarding from my the old address. The decorations however were taken down late Christmas day. 😉 Happy Monday.

    1. 82?!?! Yikes. And here I thought the forecasted 60 later this week was off the charts. I mean, it’s freaking February for crying out loud. Hope it’s been a great Monday.

  5. Thanks for the laughs. Six more weeks of this, and me and Porky Pig are going gwonhog hunting. We did manage to get into the 30s today, and we were spared any snow over the weekend. Adding those to the blessings I’ll count.

I wouldn’t guess Siri is any more reliable than the rodent or the weatherman. I won’t bother. I hope you guys have a great week.

    1. Glad you enjoyed today’s smiles, Dan. Wilson thinks the groundhog is probably related a little too closely to squirrels and we all know they are always up to know good. 😂

You’re so right, Siri probably isn’t any more reliable than the weather person. She might tell you where a certain restaurant is but that’s the extent of being able to trust her. Here’s hoping you have a fabulous Monday!

It’s not easy to verify things quickly. Before you can sift down through the research, Google always starts the page out with the AI stuff. Text messages are AI’d and distilled into short annotations.

  6. Yup, that notorious rodent saw his shadow…phooey!! At any rate whether (weather) or not, there still is 6 more weeks of winter according to the calendar! BOL! I do think the Michigan rodent did NOT see a shadow, because it’s very cloudy here and snow fell over night…but of course! Our chewy box came, and before I could bring it inside there was new fallen snow all over it! Let’s just remove these cold months out of the calendar, BOL!
    Have a great day!
By the way it feels warm here, this morning it was 24F, and Sunday morning it was -9F

    1. Wow, given what you’ve experienced lately, that’s practically a heat wave. Hope the temperature keeps going up.

Wilson is certain the groundhog is just a tubby squirrel and we all know how much trouble they cause.

      Have a great Monday.

  7. A fun post, Monika. I so dislike Siri. I never use it because most answers are totally off base. One time I did have fun with “Hey Siri, I see a little silhouetto of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?”. Try it

    1. Hahaha! Good one, John. When it first came out, my daughter and son in law used to come up with questions like “what’s the meaning of life“ just to hear a confused voice saying she didn’t have enough info to answer that question. Glad you enjoyed today’s silliness. Happy Monday!

  8. The second meme made me smile but the next one made me laugh. Yep, I saw the movie Groundhog Day. We only got a sprinkling of snow on Saturday, just enough all the neighbor boys to come sledding down our front yard. They used up all the snow and moved on to somewhere else. (Of course, they knocked on the front door first, and through all the barking I do believe they asked permission.)

    1. 🤣Let’s hope so otherwise your insurance company will have a field day processing any broken bone injuries.

    1. He needs to stop coming up for air in February! Hope you guys are digging out after the weekend storm. Have a great Monday!

  9. As to Siri herself, I’ve had pretty good luck with her for the most part. There are times when her answers either frustrate the 💩 out of me or just make me laugh and roll my eyes; but I’ll take Siri over Alexa any time. At least my conversations with Siri aren’t used by Apple unless I give the okay. I still have 3 Alexa units in the house, but I only use 2 of them as clocks – both microphones and cameras are turned off. The 3rd one is going to be relegated to same soon.

    1. Alexa, eh? Isn’t she the one that spies on people? 😁 All this AI stuff leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable-the data no doubt drive algarhyms everywhere. No that I’m a conspiracy nut, mind you. LOL Happy Monday!

      1. She’s the one. That’s why I’m working on getting rid of her. I only use the one in my bedroom to turn off/on the lights at this point…she’s one of the earlier units that doesn’t have a camera. Once I get my Apple HomePod Minis, I won’t need her either.

  10. Siri just told me that Phil DID see his shadow this morning. I wish he had just stayed in his den. 🤣 Truthfully, my love of winter is fading fast. But I love the giggles, thank you!!! Still iced in but hopefully the warmer temps will give us a break tomorrow. County EMD urged us all to stay off the roads again last night so crews could clear/treat same and rescue those who had no choice.

    1. I’m sure Phil would have been happy to stay in his den too than be paraded around with a bunch of dudes in top hats. I know I would! Hope things start to improve soon. I heard some places in the Carolinas received significant snow. Stay safe and warm. Give the Zen kids a good ear rub from me.

      1. So would I. Our snow was pretty until it started melting yesterday, but the nighttime temps made the roads treacherous still. I really feel for the folks who have no choice but to drive in that mess. (And I have NO patience for the ones who don’t have to but do anyway.)

        1. Amen! People think because they have an SUV, they’re golden…but I got news for those bozos…ice is the great equalizer. 😈

  11. It’s always six more weeks of winter. I’m so ready for spring.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a fabulous day and week. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to handsome Wilson. ♥

    1. It always is! Spring is just 45 days away…I hope the timetable is doable for you. As always, thank you for adding us to your Monday blog post. You’re the best, dear Sandee. Have a wonderful Monday!

    1. If it’s any consolation, they’re pretty lousy on this side of the pond, too. Happy Monday!

    1. Ain’t that the truth! Here’s hoping you have a wonderful Monday…and it’s repeated over and over all week long.

  12. Happy Monday! 😊 LOL about the Christmas decorations. 😂 Enjoyed them all.
Yes, crazy Puxatawney Phil makes PA famous. 😂 I am proud.
They are calling for more snow on Wednesday here. But only a little as of now.
Maybe will curl up in my blanket and watch Groundhog day on Wednesday. LOL!
    Have a great day!

    1. So glad you enjoyed today’s smiles. That Christmas decorations quip cracked me up too. Sorry about the forecast…I keep telling Mother Nature enough is enough.

It’s only effective is you watch the movie Wednesday, Thursday, Friday…😂

      Happy Monday!

  13. HGHD! it’s always seemed counter intuitive that if the Varmint sees his shadow it’s more winter. Whats the logic there?… Another related and unanswered question is how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Have a good week. I hope you get the weather you want and need. Out here at the Golden K the weather remains dry and warm. I’ve decided since I can’t control it I’m going to enjoy it and not feel guilty about it. 🙂

    1. Hee. hee…love the woodchuck question.

I think the theory behind the shadow is a cold wintery day is often clear. Folklore is a strange thing, so who knows.

Enjoy the weather-temps here will be in the 60s this week (although it’s windy this morning so it will likely feel cooler) again/still. Yikes! Happy Monday, Mike and give the Golden Girls a nice ear rub or ball toss from me.

      1. Well you know what get say about inquiring minds….

Your explanation on the clear and cold wintery day seems logical. Another mystery solved and it’s only Monday. We’re off to a good start!

The Girls always enjoy your ear rubs. The ball toss is a bonus!

        1. I may have to do more digging on the reasoning for declaring winter is extended for another 6 weeks (and coincidental with the calendar. 😂 Glad the girls enjoyed the ear rubs. Here’s hoping their day is full of joy.

  14. We love Groundhog Day and Mom loved the movie. We actually went to Punxsutawney and got to be on stage and everything but not on Groundhog Day, no thank you. We also visited the town in IL where the movie took place. Now we can officially say we have this day covered, LOL. We are happy as he says six more weeks of winter, our wish! Have a Grand week.

    1. How fun that you guys were able to visit the place. I loved the movie too. So much fun. Have a pawtastic Monday!

    1. Happy to have given a bit of the history surrounding this custom. Have a terrific Monday!

  15. Lulu: “Well it’s Groundhog Day … Again …”
Java Bean: “Our Dada looked at that second picture and said, ‘Don’t drive angry!’ We have no idea what he’s talking about, as usual.”

    1. Sorry about the winds. It’s windy here as well. There is no weather phenomena I despise more than windy conditions. Ugh. My brother is in CR right now, celebrating his birthday. Where he’s at (not sure of the exact location) it sure looked fabulous; hopefully it will calm down soon for you.

  16. Too funny. I’ve learned to just go with the flow and have no expectations. Expectations bring disappointment and we have enough of that in our everyday!
Happy Monday to you and the Floof!

    1. Amen. Plus there’s no logical sense relying on an overweight rodent to predict the weather when spring is still 45 days away. Happy Monday!

        1. 99% of the time, Siri is pretty useless. I try to minimize my frustration and don’t bother her because she clearly doesn’t like me. 😂 Have a great Monday, Carole!
