Bone Jour

Welcome to our first co-authored experiment! Hi there, Sam and Elsa here.

Sam: You already know me, I’m that handsome pet therapy dude.

Elsa: Well yes, true enough. Now me…well, I’m the smart one.

Sam: Hey…I’m smart too, sister.

Elsa: Right…whatever gets you through the night, bro. Anyway…we wanted to share a new recipe mom found from Rachel Ray recently. You know Rachel and how much she lovvves her doggies!

Sam and Elsa together in 2-part harmony: So without further adieu, let’s ‘Unleash the Quiche!’

Mini-Ham, Cheese and Spinach Pup Mini Quiche from Rachel Ray’s Kitchen*

Sam: Ok kids, let’s get started. First thing, preheat your oven to 350º and find your mini-muffin tins. Elsa, did you find those muffin tins yet?

Elsa: Got ’em! You’ll need to spray your muffin tins to keep them from sticking (or use paper cups to line). I’d do it, but I don’t have a thumb. Ooooh Mo-mmm, we need your help!

Sam: After your mom sprays the tins, combine in a small bowl these ingredients, mix 2 TBSP each of chopped ham, grated Swiss cheese and thawed drained frozen spinach, dividing equally among the muffin cups.

Elsa: Um, you know Mom is a vegetarian, right brother? Where we gonna find ham around the Ranch?

Sam: Mom will modify the recipe to account for the fact that she has no ham. We’re sharing the recipe with ham for everyone else. Maybe one day she’ll make an exception and pick up a small piece of ham steak for us. Paws crossed…hint, hint, mom.

Elsa:  It’s ok for me, I love veggies. Maybe she’ll add my favorite…green beans. Then in a medium bowl, whisk 4 eggs with 1/4 cup milk. Divide the egg mixture evenly among the cups.

Sam: Bake until golden brown and cook through, about 20 minutes depending on the size of your tins. Makes about 12 mini’s.

Elsa: How easy is that? Now ‘ham it up’ brother and let’s go dig our paws into this tasty brunch meal!

Mom here interrupting this co-authored post by making a cameo appearance: If you make this up, let us know what you think. Our version will be slightly modified since, as noted by the ‘smart one,’ meat is an unknown commodity around our vegetarian lifestyle Ranch.

  1. SLUUURRRRP!!!!! Boy I am sitting in a puddle of my own drool right now! That recipe looks DEEELISSSHHHH!! My humom needs to make this for me and Keiko!

  2. What a great recipe, but unfortunately I’ll have to hide it from our pooches. I don’t want them starting to demand home-cooked meals when they’ll only eat no-frills beef kibble. Mind you, this is well and truly supplemented with human food.
My mum visits once a week and often brings the dogs ham scraps. Grandma is obviously very popular.
Our dogs haven’t tried green beans, but Lady enjoys pumpkin and will raid the worm farm to nab the pumpkin skins. Meanwhile, Bilbo’s nose was spotted recently with some egg shell from the worm farm. That’s what I call “evidence”.

    1. It has been quite surprising that Elsa seems to relish green beens, blueberries, raspberries, apples and other fruits and veggies. It’s rubbed off on Sam who would have rather set his fur on fire than eat fruits and veggies.

  3. Sounds good enough for us uprights! No pork for these girls with their sensitive tummies, but they do occasionally get to share half of a scrambled egg with a little bit of cheese mixed in. I used to have a recipe for Quiche Lorraine but I don’t know what happened to it.

  4. Wait. You’re vegetarian? I never knew…since when? Are you a gluten-free upright, too? We need to talk…around these parts kale is used to separate the foods you want to eat not actually as a consumable item! At least we can agree that beer is a wholesome grain product.

  5. Good job, you two! I love to take recipes like this and modify them to what we have in the house. I can’t wait to try this one when we have our own fresh eggs! I’d probably use kale from the garden instead of spinach, and maybe even skip the ham too. I don’t feed the dogs ham in general, but maybe I’d do some bacon as a special treat.

    1. So jealous that you’ll get to use fresh eggs. Makes all the difference in the world in taste. Good for you! And I like the idea of kale in place of spinach. That’s giving me all sorts of ideas. 😇

  6. well, when Milo grows up and starts having brunch parties, this is just what he’ll serve! Then the humans and the poodles can all eat the same meal and save the mama some effort. Of course she will still have to set the table…

  7. I love simple recipes, and what I love about this, is the humans could have it too. Although, we do not usually have pork products either, but I can get some substitutions going. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Dogs seem to love cheese and eggs so this was a fun way to share something they love anyway. Let me know how it turns out even if substituted. I’ll post a followup with our own efforts. Happy weekend!

  8. When I worked at a vet’s, we were always prepared for dogs coming in right after Easter with pancreatitis from being fed ham. Maybe this tiny bit won’t bother anyone, but still… It looks really yummy for us 2-leggeds.

    1. That’s interesting, Amy. Even before I became a vegetarian, I was not a fan of pork. Your comment doesn’t inspire me to make an exception and will substitute veggies in this recipe. 🙂

      1. Good idea. Jeff likes to tell the story of when we attended the theatre soiree in tux and gown with Lexi. Everyone was feeding her, and I even have a picture of her standing with her front paws on the cream puff table asking for more (she was too polite to help herself). I spotted the ham, stood up on an ottoman, and announced in a loud voice, “No one feed any ham to the schnauzer!”

  9. Sounds good enough for me to eat!❤️ I’ll try it for Miley however as she has become increasingly picky on treats. She will love this! 😉

  10. ooooh magnifique… Rachel Ray is the best… sadly we don’t have that tasty food here… we can only read about Rachel in blogs or in the favorite book of the mama: bitter is the new black :o)
