~ Tails Around the Ranch

Happy TGIF! Today we are going to share some thoughts about Mother Nature and her incredible ability for resilience in spite of her bad self. As usual, we’re joining our weekly hosts, those adorably sweet pupsters, Rosy, Sunny, Arty and Jakey from LLB in Our Backyard. Don’t forget to click on their link to check out what they and others in Blogville have shared.

As you may recall, Mother Nature walloped the Mile High. For a recap of a major blizzard that blanketed the Ranch, click here. Over two feet of snow along with swirling drifts pounded the area but nature is nothing if not resilient. Take a look at what a couple of days of melting will expose.

Nature didn’t put a damper on St. Patrick’s Day fun for some. While others were too busy for any celebration. Note the drift in the foreground below which was a lengthy challenge to remove. Wet snow is heavy for ‘shovelers’ of all types, be they man or machines.

But there’s no doubt the accumulation of all that snow could be hard on gardens. I wondered how the early spring bulbs might fare.

Remember those miniature daffodils I shared last week? Even being buried under 2+ ft. of heavy snow didn’t seem to damper their desire to find daylight. They were slightly bent but their fighting spirit was not be denied.

Even these tulips which normally don’t fare so well when they’ve been squashed with heavy snow, managed to rise to the occasion.

 

Yesterday afternoon’s walk left me utterly astounded at how buoyant Nature can be in the face of  the aftermath of a major storm.

The evergreen shrub below had been completely buried just two days earlier and yet it seemed none the worse for the trouble and with our strong sunshine will straighten its branches out soon.

Although a few broken branches were spotted on a couple of evergreen trees (nothing too major though), I was struck by the sheer survival instinct Mother Nature employs. She dishes out all kinds of mayhem with one hand yet pushes plants forward with the other. It’s truly remarkable.

These past few days of temps in the upper 40’s and 50’sF will melt even more and it should be interesting to see what else emerges before the next round of spring storms hits Sunday night.

  1. It is amazing, isn’t it, how spring flowers and plants rebound so quickly after a storm like that one. We are sitting here in the Sunday night storm. We already have around 6″ from it. I checked our daffy bulbs today at noon, and they haven’t stirred yet. Smart plants!

  7. Nature is so resilient, and quite forgiving for the most part. Our temps in March are all over the place, windchill Sunday night was -5F, this Sunday is due to top 60F. So crazy, yet the bulb shoots are emerging, undeterred. Hope your coming storm is not too bad!

  11. Wow, those plants are amazingly strong! We are finally supposed to get some consistently warmer weather this week – yay! Flowers can’t be too far behind our melting snow – which is still deep in some places, but we are starting to see more bare ground now.

    In the mid seventies, we had a foot or more of snow…*after* the tulips were blooming…and somewhere I have a picture of a brave tulip, with only the flower above the dump of coldness! I should dig it out and scan it!

    We had a wee bit of snow, some rain, and way too much wind. it brought sown a power line onto a home not too far from here, and caused the roof to burn. Thankfully no one was hurt. I will have to spend a lot of time on my weekend off work to pick up all the branch/limb debris in my yard. Benji will have a ball picking them up…and not to help me either, LOL!

    The only signs of Spring here are tiny (miniscule) leaf buds on almost all the trees…..I also see the top inch or so of my dicentra – NOTHING keeps that from carrying on including snow and frost (which we have several times been forecast to get but haven’t!). Will be happy to see MORE of Spring – today we have temps of 35 accompanied with wind gusts of 35mph. Miserable would be the word! Love your photos – everything is doing well in spite of that winter blast you got.

  21. we live in an area with extreme weather and changes in a day. I’ve never lived anywhere like this. Even in Edmonton Canada, it stayed cold til Spring (in May) You knew what to expect. This was the most snow in years right? More coming for us on the weekend.
    And no plowing here so people pack it down in the streets to ice so that you can’t safely cross the streets on a little walk. What’s that thing people say? well we needed the moisture? true…

Then transferred to Multiply...Mingflower went to Summerland & NYLABLUE my BluePoint Siamese/Burmese cross took over. When Multiply was closing a handful of our blogging friends recommended WordPress & we found a home here & made many new friends. Everyone followed the antics & struggles of NYLABLUE until her passing Nov. 22nd, 2014 to Summerland. A week later a little bouncing Burmese boy I met at a local adoption event joined me here! Dec. 9th, 2014. Purrince Siddhartha Henry came to live with me & regaled us with his journey towards 'Enlightenment'. He was a Burmese Buddhist with many health issues but he searched for meaning in his Life. After his lifelong struggle with Panleukopenia. Siddhartha Henry lost his battle & left for Pure Land August 28th, 2018. He was only 4 years & 1 month old. I've never totally gotten over the loss of my "Little Man". And this is where I get VERY serious. This Purrfect Pad blog is not all sunshine & roses. This blog is about REAL life with special needs cats who come into my life. We share our time together & we share the good, the bad & the ugly. This is a REAL blog. Yes we DO laugh & have fun & take Selfies! And we share each cat's struggles whether health issues or behavioural problems.       1. BellaDharma an BellaSita Mum – On Georgian Bay..... – Welcome to THE Purrfect Pad. My name is Sherri-Ellen & my current Kitty Girl is BellaDharma a black part Siamese cat. I started blogging in August 2005 on Yahoo 360 with Mingflower my Bluepoint Siamese. Then transferred to Multiply...Mingflower went to Summerland & NYLABLUE my BluePoint Siamese/Burmese cross took over. When Multiply was closing a handful of our blogging friends recommended WordPress & we found a home here & made many new friends. Everyone followed the antics & struggles of NYLABLUE until her passing Nov. 22nd, 2014 to Summerland. A week later a little bouncing Burmese boy I met at a local adoption event joined me here! Dec. 9th, 2014. Purrince Siddhartha Henry came to live with me & regaled us with his journey towards 'Enlightenment'. He was a Burmese Buddhist with many health issues but he searched for meaning in his Life. After his lifelong struggle with Panleukopenia. Siddhartha Henry lost his battle & left for Pure Land August 28th, 2018. He was only 4 years & 1 month old. I've never totally gotten over the loss of my "Little Man". And this is where I get VERY serious. This Purrfect Pad blog is not all sunshine & roses. This blog is about REAL life with special needs cats who come into my life. We share our time together & we share the good, the bad & the ugly. This is a REAL blog. Yes we DO laugh & have fun & take Selfies! And we share each cat's struggles whether health issues or behavioural problems.
