Can Dogs Be Religious?

It seems like maybe my dog might just be a Catholic…he sure seems very religious lately. If he starts following Pope Francis on Twitter, I’ll know for sure. I mean, he seems to be trying to baptize every living thing in sight these days. It goes something like this:

Find every possible tree or shrub and then sniff (pray), pee (baptize), repeat. Heavy emphasis on the pray and repeat parts. Most of the time, the baptize part is just a few drops. Gawd, I love male dogs. For the record he walked around that particularly tree twice and then circled back in the opposite direction once more before the ‘blessing.’ My neighbors are soo lucky he’s such a religious guy.

final

So far he hasn’t done too much damage to the garden but I’m holding my breath. There’s so much material to work with, so I’m sure there’ll be some collateral damage at some point. On the plus side, the climbing rose near the front door has NEVER bloomed that much before.

Is your dog ‘religious?’

Live, love, bark! <3

  1. Sand Spring Chesapeakes – Cambria, WI – My husband and I have six "furry" children Gambler, Glory, Guilty, Slammer, Gertie and one cat Bones and two furangel's Norman and Nellie. We breed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. We are both avid hunters. We also enjoy competing with our dogs in hunt tests and field trials. That is where you can find us during the trial months which are April-September. When were not at a trial we are busy training our dogs. We go snow goose hunting in Canada each year and do all the hunting that Wisconsin offers.

BAhahahaha, Gambler is Catholic too he baptizes the other dogs.

Haha. In the words of one political candidate, she’s just ‘misconstrued.’ 😉

  2. Great post, Monika. Very entertaining. Bilbo is very devout, although I think you’d have to say that worshipping a tennis ball, would have to be classified as a “cult”. He has no scruples either and is quite happy to chase another dog’s ball. He is totally obsessed but being a Border Collie, I think it’s in the genes.
Hope you’re having a great week. We have a long weekend in honour of the Queen’s Birthday. We’re not going away though and doesn’t look that relaxing either but a change will be good.
Hope you have a great weekend!
    xx Rowena

Perhaps you can explain why the celebration is now when her actual birthday is in April if memory serves me correctly? 🙃

  3. Dear Lord Yes! He sniffs for so damn long I’m like you could go SO much further on your walk, if you’d only stop sniffing. Then of course there are times where nothing but a couple of drops come out. LOL

P.S. I was giggling and nodding the whole post. 😉

  4. lol. Yes, Rita is surprisingly “religious” for a girl dog! She definitely likes to “bless” certain spots on our walks. 🙂

Thank you! If you were ever in the Highlands in NW Denver, you may well have. 🙂 It might have looked ‘slightly’ different back then-this was a distressed property until it was rehabbed. I consider myself very lucky to have found it.

Thanks, Nancy❣️ Funny how some pets are more ‘religious’ than others. My last Standard must have been an atheist since he NEVER peed on walks. 🙂 Hope you’re well.

  6. tippysmom2 – I adopted a puppy in 2013 and it has been an adventure ever since. My Facebook friends love her stories, so thought I would share with others as well.

As a female, I am surprised at how much Tippy “blesses” things too…..but, with her, it is usually only places where other animals have left behind a message of some sort. So, I guess she is more of a pee mail dog. LOL

  8. colinandray – S. Ontario, Canada – My profile photo is of Ray. Despite the fact that I had never had a dog in my life before him, and despite the fact that he carried more emotional baggage than I could ever imagine, he carved for himself a huge niche in my heart.

Wow! Then that “play bow” is probably nothing less than a prayer position? 🙂

yes, it seems Easy is catholic too. He ran through the side door of the church and ruined the mass. The father stopped him with some water splashes… all people laughed it was a little too much cliché how a priest can chase away the devil with holy water :o)
