Nature Friday ~ March 15, 2019

Nature FridayWhile today is the Ides of March, we’re joining the fun with our friends, Rosy and her brothers from LLB in Our Backyard for this week’s edition of the Nature Friday Blog Hop. According to the ancient Roman calendar, the Ides signaled the first full moon of the month, which generally occurred between the 13thand 15th of each month. Though most of us associate the Ides of March as the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. Et tu Brute.

After this week’s “bomb cyclone,” with hurricane-force winds, extensive power outages (some still in effect today) and 8-12″ of snow and drifts, we thought we’d prefer to focus on the softer side of Mother Nature instead of her damaging impact on the environment.

This weekend is St. Patrick’s Day and a much better way to share a spot of nature by celebrating with some lucky ‘clover?’ While Oxalis is not a true clover (it’s part of the Wood Sorrell family), it does look like a plant most associated with St. Patrick’s Day (beyond hops in beer), the four-leaf clover. I’ve had this plant well over a decade and while it looks a bit bedraggled due to some inconsistent watering of late…my bad, this little guy makes my Irish heritage on my Dad’s side, smile. It recently finished blooming small white flowers. When grown outdoors, shamrocks tend to be somewhat invasive nature as their fast-spreading tuberous roots spread like wildfire. Indoors, they can brighten a sunny windowsill nicely as a charming houseplant.

St. Patrick's Day

As a nod to St. Patrick’s Day, Sam graciously agreed to pose for a photo shoot this morning while his sister, Elsa said “not no how, not no way and I don’t care what kind of treats you’re using as a bribe are involved.” Guess Ninja’s don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Still, everyone at the Ranch sends our best wishes for a fun and Happy St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

    1. Thanks, mom keeps me mostly fashionable. If only she wouldn’t laugh at me when she takes the photos. She’s gonna give me a complex. 🤣

  1. Reading this caused me to bang my head against the wall. I totally missed the Ides of March … which means I missed Buzzard Day …. Tiss tiss tiss. … shame on me. OK – Friday wasn’t the best day, and 2 days later I realize Buzzard Day … Oh the horror … but hey – Sam dressed for today makes me smile.

    1. Buzzard day? I’m not familiar with that one. Sounds like you missed Pi Day too. 🥧

            1. That velvety voice singing all those ballads. A classy guy throughout his life.

    1. Elsa makes a fine looking lass in Kelly Green. I’ll bet you do too, BellaDharma. ☘️

        1. She looks pretty Irish in my mind. Check her out on our Instagram page where you can see for yourself. ☘️☘️☘️

            1. www,Instagram.com then search for us (Tails Around the Ranch) But you need a cell phone to post images through their app. A pic of it (and others) on the right side on our blog page shows the last 4 photos we’ve posted. ☘️

    1. Thank you. Mom says I’m very very Leprechaun-ish-does that mean the same thing?

  3. You look very Irish Sam! We are excited as the temperatures as supposed to get in the low 60’s next week!

    1. Reluctant perhaps for posing like a Leprechaun, but certainly not reluctant to dish out Leprechaun mischief. 😊

    1. Thank you, Kosmo. As you can see, I take these celebrations seriously. We hope you have a wonderful weekend with springtime conditions.

  4. Lookin’ good Sam!!!! Ma (who is half Irish) approves of your outfit! She has been lookin’ for my Irish headgear and can’t seem to find it.(hint: I hid it while she wasn’t lookin’…hehehehee) Butts she is still on the hunt, so headgear photos are still in the mix..sigh.
Have a most FABulous St. Patrick’s Day weekend!!
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

    1. Ugh, the head gear photo shoots are the worst. I had to endure 7 attempts. Funny how that hat kept slipping. {snicker} 😆

    1. He was very patient while I was setting up. It was hard because I was laughing so hard. 🍀🍀🍀

  5. Mom has had oxalis before but not for a while. She loves the ones with the pink flowers, but they are hard to find.

Sam did very well. We got the Irish treatment today too. We were not too happy about it, but the treats made us cooperate.

    1. It’s one of our favorite houseplants. Have never seen the pink blossoms, only the purple leafed one (besides this green variety).

    1. We sure hope so. Maybe we can even coax the Ninja to celebrate with us. #needbettertreats

  6. Sam, you are just too cute. All ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Hopefully, the weather will be changing for everyone and snow is not in the forecast anymore until winter. Thanks for the share. Have a wonderful day.

    1. Why thank you. I think my Irish roots come through loud and clear. BOL☘️

  7. It’s so nice to see something green.
Sam, you are such a good sport! Happy St. Patrick’s Day weekend! I don’t have any Irish in me, but my Dad’s birthday was St. Patrick’s Day, so he thought that made us honorary Irish. 🙂

  8. We’re not Irish either, but we have a little leprechaun amongst us. And sometimes she’s a gremlin, but we love her no matter which of her multiple personalities she wears. 🍀🐾

  9. Wow, Colorado really did get hit hard by that “bomb cyclone”–hopefully the last big storm of the season. Meanwhile in San Diego, this past week we saw a migration of Painted Lady butterflies coming up from Mexico…lovely!

    1. Can’t wait for their arrival here. They flutter around the garden like drunken sailors from the plumbago pollen and make me smile.

    1. Yes, that would definitely be a grand celebration-us German breed dogs drinking green beer and not having a hangover the next day.

    1. When you put on a tie, peeps think you clean up nicely. ☘️Little do they know there’s mud out there with my name on it!
