This sounds like excellent advice, regardless of the specific day of the week. I’m tempted to give it a try… 😛

Thing is that once he settles back in I think it’s going to be a hot summer. This means that the drought will intensify in New South Wales and Victoria and we will probably go on restricted use. Ah yes, Australia – the Lucky Country…

That means your ’12 hours’ are condensed in the dark.

          1. Nah. Doesn’t get dark till almost 9. And besides, I’m inside at the bar, in the cool while my coworkers are sweltering in this gawd-awful heat. Feeling kinda lucky, I admit.

🥰I’ve always thought shifts in the food industry were many hours jammed into a small period of time. I.E. it’s hard work. Enjoy the AC and may the tips be a-flowin. You deserve it.

              1. Well, in this nuthouse where I work, we do five days per week (when we are not coerced into six) and it truly is a distinct type of place. One of the waiters who joined us a few months ago keeps saying what a fucked up place this is. He has never worked so hard in his life.
Tips don’t a-flow. Ever. They are members and have a bar bill and are charged monthly with their tips automatically added on. We never get extra. Almost never. And not from the members but maybe occasionally from their guests.

The hotel I did banquets had a no tip policy for servers too. Hardest work I’ve ever done but the hourly rate wasn’t too bad so it was ok. Only did it to finance my gypsy travels but the peeps were an interesting collection of humanity and far more so than the entitled banquet guests for the most part. Some people think servers are indentured servants and not real live people. 😬

                  1. That’s what they do for us. I get like over $3 more than the minimum servers’ wage to make up for the missing 4% in tips. We get 11 instead of the basic 15 in most places.
But honestly, the schlepping of tables and chairs is crazy. Yesterday was a “Battle of the Sexes” golf tournament. When they all came back I was like a friggen spinning top at the bar. Had to get a friend to come and help me at one point as the tickets were coming in non-stop. Was nuts.
And yeah, we are way on the bottom of the totem pole for some. Which is why I used to just say I worked in a golf club and omitted the server part.

That was the same with us and we had to be able to schlep 10 plates on a tray just to get hired. And walk miles. After working all day for demanding attorneys and then working a night banquet from demanding banquet guests, you were one tuckered out puppy when you got home. Though the creme brúle for dessert sure went down smoothly 😛(we were able to eat the selection of the evening for free). Always preferred night banquets over brunches and lunches for better hours but nights brought out the worst in guests. #toomuchalcohol

                    2. I cannot imagine doing two jobs when this is one of them! There are a couple I work with who do… non merci.
I don’t enjoy doing the banquets at all, preferring table service and the exchanges that can happen there. Why I’m having fun at the bar- and I don’t know if it is so, but it does seem more sit there now than before. That charming barmaid and all 😉 ! No, seriously, some did before, too.
We get to eat leftovers, too which sometimes comes just as we are all about to faint from lack of energy!

                      Tails Around the Ranch says:

One the one hand banquets are easy. But it’s hard physical labor and patrons are often snooty and rude. You can generally figure banquets frequently serve Chicken Chernobyl for many events (i.e. wedding receptions). We’re trying to plate 500 dinners in 20 minutes and someone invariably asks for a special item. Dude, you are kidding, right? At a hotel that only served Pepsi products, you’d always get at least one Coke person who pitched a fit finding out we didn’t serve Diet Coke. People! Argh.

I’ll bet you are the most charming barmaid they’ve ever had. And certainly the smartest!

                    4. They are. In today’s “allergy, food-intolerance, special diet” days, it has become a nightmare. One person has to be the runner for the fussasses. I mean special needs, I mean special dietary needs… ahem.
Dude – there are so many of them. Ugh.

I dunno about that, but I do garner a laugh or two 😉

Yeah, if I meet one more “gluten intolerant” person I think I’ll scream. It never ceases to amaze me the sheer number of all those so-called medical professionals there rivaling Dr. Google [insert rolling eyes here]. They read about the latest condition on the ‘Net and suddenly everyone has a peanut allergy or celiac disease. Your progression of adjectives made me laugh. Thanks, I needed that. I was beginning to break out in hives from recalling those indentured days. 🤣

                    6. Glad I did! (make you laugh). I do know some severely celiac people. Their lives are hell – especially with all the now gluten-free peeps hopping on the bandwagon solely because they heard they can lose weight.
I really need to find a new job… sigh.

                      Tails Around the Ranch says:

The true celiac peeps deserve patience, help and empathy. They truly have a medical condition that merits monitoring and attention. The band-waggoners…not so much.

Didn’t mean to depress you. Been there, done that, earned the tee-shirt. Hopefully that one or two nice patron will be on today’s shift and bring a smile and proper level of appreciation and gratitude you richly deserve. 🥰

                    8. True.

And nah, it takes more than that. I am getting just a tad done with this one, though. I never lasted more than 3 years in one place (besides once where I managed 6.5) so… my time here is coming to a close.
Besides, I’m getting too old for this shit!
And, I am sure my usual old farts will be sitting in their circle in the loungers across from the bar… mind you, they will be getting ready to leave 😉
