MLK Monday ~ January 20, 2020

Today in the U.S. we are celebrating Martin Luther King day around the Ranch. A legal holiday, it was first celebrated in 1986, despite taking more than a decade before all 50 states adopted the holiday, it is marked every third Monday of January.

A soaring orator, Dr. King is known for many inspiring quotes. Here is one that seems even more appropriate in this day and age.

Holiday

No celebration of the life of Martin Luther King is complete without revisiting the speech that defined his life. Only one of many transformative speeches, the “I Have A Dream” speech still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

We hope that whatever you do today, you contemplate the words of this remarkable man and strive to perform some act of kindness or service.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

  1. I can only imagine what MLK would think if he was still alive today. Things have just gotten worse – not better. He was a courageous man and told people the truth whether they wanted to hear it or not.

  2. Amen … and to think that there are those who fought against him having a federal holiday … and state and local governments that don’t honor his day. Well done, Monika!

    1. Thanks, Frank. It was a long embarrassing process for that federal holiday to be created. Such indignity foisted on an icon who deserved better.

    1. Thanks. Inspiration seems to be in short supply these days; I hope today is a welcome reminder to people across the country.

  3. That first quote rings so very true. We need to love each other more instead of all the division.

Have a fabulous day and week, my friend. ♥

    1. The division is tearing this country apart and continue to embrace Dr. King’s message of love and inclusion.

  4. the first quote is especially meaningful in current times. Even brothers have rivalries and competition but under that is a sense that we all belong together.

    1. Yes, it was meaningful then and even more so today. Our country’s poor fractured psyche needs this exact kind of inspiration.

  5. Lucy – We will all think of acts of kindness we could do today.
Xena – Mom could show us kindness with extra treats!
Amy – And you, Xena, could show us all kindness by refraining from barking at people, squirrels, birds and leaves blowing in the wind that you see out the front window today.
