Nature Friday ~ May 17, 2019

Yay, it’s finally Friday and we couldn’t be happier putting this week in the history books. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little nature, right? Even though we are in the heart of the city, there are lots of spaces where one can get away from the constant noise and hubbub. While out running around doing errands this week I came across this mini-stream between a couple of parking lots. It enchanted me enough that I climbed down the bank and just stood there for a few moments taking it all in before resuming the challenging battle against returning to the hamster wheel known as urban life. Sadly, I scared away some bathing birds who undoubtedly thought I was trespassing, if their squawking was any indication.

City Stream

Once home, I realized the woodruff in my garden is beginning to green up and bloom. Apparently a little Ladybug also discovered it and was busily noshing for aphids or the other little crawly things they enjoy. It gave me another opportunity just to quietly watch and relax while nature did its thing.

During this morning’s walk-about, I noticed one of the neighbors has replaced their turf grass into a carpet of tiny purple flowered groundcover. It won’t need mowing and I don’t ever recall these flowers being quite as prolific and lovely as they are this year. Guess last week’s snow and rain encouraged an enhanced bloom now that the temps have moved back into the 80’sF. The spring temperatures have been so fickle this year; one week in the 30’sF and a few days later up into the 80’sF. Springtime in the Rockies is never dull.

Sam continues to feel better; thank you for all the sweet thoughts and POTP. It’s made quite the difference in bringing back the Knucklehead’s smile.

Have a wonderful weekend and don’t forget to visit Rosy and her brothers and all the other ‘pawticipants’ in this week’s Nature Friday Blog Hop.

Live, love, bark! 🐾

It snowed last night and some this morning. Our hug is hovering just above freezing after last week’s 80’s. Sooo crazy!

Those look like Forget-me-Nots. They don’t last long but they sure are pretty.

I’m not sure if they’re forget-me-knots since these are more purple, but they could be. By the next time I walked by, the blooms were gone…or at least asleep for the evening. 😊

      1. Right, they are more blue to periwinkle blue. But on the photo 😉
Still, what a wonderful way to stop wasting water – by planting anything but grass that needs less care.

Totally agree. Denver is a considered a high mountain desert, climate wise and because over 66% of all water usage in the summer is for landscapes, it only makes sense to reduce unnecessary water consumption. At least on my screen they appear purple-ish. Maybe I should have my 👀checked. LOL

          1. No, no, they DO look puprle-ish! As it’s a photo, I can assume they were more blue-ish 😉
And honestly, whatever they are, they are lovely!

The sidewalk, the flowers and the dogs are all equally lovely. I would love a pavement (sidewalk) like that but where you have a eucalyptus tree, nothing grown next to it and it sheds bark and leaves prolifically so the area around it always looks untidy as do the gardens next to it. The original town planners planted these trees everywhere.

      Tails Around the Ranch says:

We have trees that drop pods, seeds, etc. and they make the sidewalks unsightly here too (a big catalpa tree across the street is especially troublesome and it takes ages to clean up it’s 8-10 inch long pods that look like sticks). The plus side is that sidewalks are easy to clean up, but very time-consuming with lots of brooming when you want things tidy.

Not familiar with May bowls but think that woodruff is so tiny, I doubt I’d be being able to make one. I’ll have to look them up to see what they look like.

      1. It’s a punch…you steep the leaves of woodruff in reisling then add sugar if you want it sweet, or not as you choose, add Sekt and, again if you choose, brandy, and garnish with sliced strawberries. Hers was gorgeous.
