Veterans DayToday the U.S., Canada and Europe mark the anniversary of the end of World War I where major hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, and the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Historically speaking, this holiday was signed into law in the U.S. by President Dwight Eisenhower on May 26, 1954 honoring all veterans who served in the Armed Forces. Europe celebrates today as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day.  When major U.S. veteran organizations urged renaming the day to “Veterans Day,” Congress amended the bill on June 1, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and has been known as Veterans Day ever since. (BTW the attributive case as opposed to the possessive is the officially correct spelling “because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, but rather a day to honor all veterans). For Grammarians, using the apostrophe is however grammatically appropriate.

Today we honor and celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans, while May’s Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.

And because she’s a little pill and absolutely refused to participate in a joint photo session with Norman, the Ninja posed separately. #ohthatdog!

Nevertheless, both Ranch hands and I tip our hats to all veterans who have served their country.

She considers herself to be of “mixed” cultural heritage, which has contributed to her general love of music. Her mother, a New Englander by birth, was working down in the southeast Kentucky mountains with the Frontier Nursing Service when she met Lavinia’s father, a Kentucky native, who had just returned from WWII. Lavinia first learned to play guitar from her brothers when she was in grade school and dreamed of playing in coffee houses someday. A fine musician in her own right, and solo performer at folk festivals, she now resides with her husband and blues musician Rick Ross, and an unlikely collection of 4 “cats of personality” in the beautiful Cascade foothills in Sweet Home, Oregon.     Veterans Day/Remembrance Day is a serious thing to us as well…..in my lifetime and having lived near Washington, DC a couple of times in my life with a father in the Air Force visits to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were frequent. It always struck me that it honored the unknown. So many who fought never made it back home too. Heroes – all.

  8. John W. Howell – South Texas Gulf Coast – I have been working in business for over forty years and now have the time to work in special areas of interest. My passion has always been to create compelling stories of fiction. I have authored six novels and am working on my Seventh. The first novel is still in manuscript form and being utilized as a door stop in the laundry room. The second is a contemporary fiction novel of 89,000 words and is complete and I am currently seeking a publisher. I also write poetry but have not had the guts to share any with anyone. The one time I read a piece to a person their only comment was, “it doesn’t rhyme.” I will continue to write and hopefully my blog, Fiction Favorites at www.johnwhowell.com will provide some entertainment and an interesting thought or two. I live in the Austin area with my wife Molly and an assortment of loving pets.

      Thank you. We have pretty strong opinions about supporting veterans every day. My niece’s husband spent several tours in the Middle East and has had some issues integrating back in civilian life after being in for 20 years. Norman sends soft pupster kisses.

  10. Andit would be a good day to think about how we stop governmenst sending young men and women to war for reasons that are nothing to do with defending our country.
