Sibling Dynamics

It’s been slightly over a month since Sam was joined by a little raven haired sister. Apart from Elsa’s diagnosis of epilepsy shortly after arriving, her integration as a dog into our household continues. Mostly it’s been without incident but the past week or so, there have been a couple of big kerfuffles which seems to suggest the ‘siblings’ are a bit jealous of one another. As the little miss gains her confidence, she realizes that the attention and loving care she is receiving is a pretty good arrangement. The past couple of incidents were the result of her apparently not getting all she thought she was entitled to, or that she was jealous at a misperceived favoring of Sam.

If you weren’t aware, let me just say I’m a big sports fan. As in…huge. Following along in that theme, there are times when I’m trying to decide if the Ranch has turned into a hockey arena or if it’s Madison Square Garden’s fight of the week…or maybe a combination of both. Sure there’s lots of jockeying for the puck (guess the puck would be me) with the ‘goal’ being to score favor in mom’s eyes. If you lean more toward being a pugilist…the combatants go to their neutral corners. If I sit on the floor, they come running to garner my 110% attention by sitting in or near my lap, to have their ears scratched. Usually it involved Elsa deftly maneuvering Sam out of close proximity. She’s a real master positioning herself between him and me. Being fairly close in size and weight, she has figured out just how to subtly herd him out of the way. Most of the time Sam wanders off on his own confused, but at other times, Elsa makes sure he wanders off with the precision of a military drone sniper strike. It always ends quickly and both look at each other and then at me as if they’d been possessed by demons with no explanation as to how that dust-up happened. Luckily there are no food aggression issues.

With siblings there always seem to come a pecking order and we’re still trying to sort out that order, in addition to integrating a puppy mill dog who has no clue about manners let alone how to properly be a dog. Add in trying to manage her condition and it becomes a muddy mess. In the meantime, I’ll be the one wearing a striped shirt, blowing a time-out whistle and refereeing these games, be they hockey or Golden Gloves.

How do you handle ‘sibling’ competition?

Things that go bump in the night

Ok, picture this. It’s the middle of the night and the call of nature wakes you up. More like screams its ugly head off, but you still resist. The crisp autumn air is a definite deterrent so you roll over and think, it’ll go away soon. Twenty minutes later, your bladder continues to send messages to your brain to get up and take care of this. You’re wide awake now so you succumb to your brain’s nagging and drag your sorry butt out of bed…shivering. You quietly tiptoe past the snoring fur-kids, quietly closing the bedroom door so as not to disturb anyone, walking toward the bathroom. Then you step on one of these babies. O.U.C.H. Ever step on one of these gizmos of pure torture? We kick or walk over these things 87 times a day. Elsa drags them from one end of the house to the other and I love that both fur-kids enjoy these beef hooves, but yikes, those bad boys will make you howl like a banshee if you step on them with bare feet when you’re somewhat half asleep.

img_4008

Suddenly you’re hoping around on one foot, yelling every HBO word you’ve ever heard, kicking those hummers every which way and the racket of all that yelling combined with skittering hooves across hardwood floors crashing into walls and furniture has woken up the entire household up with you asking everyone, “Who the [blank] left these things lying around?!?!” The sleepy faces facing you just nod, mumble and shuffle back to bed. You’re left wide awake with the you-know-what scared out of you, blood pouring from a toe and too mad to pee. Why is there no justice for mom? Would I be less crabbish if I stepped on a squeaking stuffie in the middle of the night? Yeah probably not, but at least I wouldn’t have to triage my injury before getting back to sleep in the freezing dark.

1l-image

Note to self: think about getting one of those IED robots to clear these “land mines” out  before you going to bed to avoid this far too often repeated scenario.

Hope your re-entry into the work week was far less traumatic and you had a great night’s sleep following a beautiful Autumn weekend.

Monday Musings ~ October 17, 2016

Hi there sports fans…Sam here. Mom is still trying to rejuvenate herself and asked me to do today’s post. She said something about having voter fatigue and that she just couldn’t take all the negativity anymore and that she had nothing. Then she said something about not coming out from the covers for the next 22 days. Not sure what all that means but think it might be something related to whenever she turns on the TV and starts hollering lots of HBO words. Said she can’t watch anything without some nasty ad or crap-tastic lie from the candidates and I KNOW she isn’t talking about the ‘Candy Dates’ from Blogville. Both Arty and Christmas are totally pawsome!

So I thought I’d make things a little lighter and easier on you and her. I know it’s late in the campaign, but to save this country, I’m tossing my furs in the ring for the 2016 presidential race. I have no baggage (it helps when you don’t have any thumbs) and there are no sex crimes or escapades in my history (ok, except for that Bassett Hound at dog prison but I was under duress missing my mom while she was gallivanting around The Big Island back in May and I doubt he’d want any negative publicity-we left captivity as BFF’s-best fur-iends furever). Luckily there are no videos of any alleged transgressions, and I can assure you I didn’t utter any ‘locker room banter.’ I’m true red, white and blue and would be honored to receive your vote. My platform is simple…I think every pet should have a loving home with uprights who will take care of them and love them completely…and treats. Lots and lots of treats. But not so many that we end up becoming obese, mind you. I support daily exercise, ear scratches, lots of naps and baths should be optional not mandatory. There are no conflicts with lobbyists regarding any of those issues either. For the record, I never received any speaking fee in case you’re wondering.

Please consider my platform and relax knowing I can return dignity and honor to the institution of the presidency and hope you’ll seriously vote for me as the candidate who can bring everyone together with loads of smiles all the while making you proud to be an American again.

Vote for Sam, a true ‘pawtriot!’

On an additional note, I want to wish mom’s ‘baby sister’ a Happy Birthday today.

May smiles and fun, joy and cheer, luck and happiness stay with you all next year.
Hope your birthday brings all these to your door
Filling your life with delight and much more. We love ya. Woof!

The dog ate…

We’ve all heard and even laughed rolled our eyes at that age-old excuse…”the dog ate my homework.” No doubt all the teachers out there have heard that once more than once with all manner of variation to go along with it. Well, I’ve got a new one to add to the list of creative things the dog ate. But “the dog ate my reading glasses” seems rather implausible to me.

eyewearApparently ‘little miss’ is starting to feel pretty darn ‘comfortable’ around the Ranch. Leather pieces I can understand; she’s turned her choppers toward a couple of pairs of shoes, slippers and shoestrings in the past week or so. She even tried to sample swallow a freshly washed dog bandana yesterday a couple of hours after munching on the glasses! Are you freakin’ kidding me????? Argh!

Sheesh, it’s beginning to feel like there’s a new toddler lurking running around and I need to baby proof the entire house. Problem is I must have forgotten how to do that. I mean, even when my kids were little, they never ate my glasses. And besides, who the heck prepares for that?!

I’m beginning to suspect that maybe Sam might be coaching her into some of this naughtiness behavior. I mean, we all know about his leather proclivities. So now he’s mentoring the little sister? Is that why I thought I heard some snickering? Oy.

Is there a ‘chewer’ in your house?

A funny thing happened last Friday…

Those of you who follow us on Facebook know what I mean when I say “a funny thing happened on Friday” but let me set the stage for the rest of you. So…have you ever considered sponsoring a dark-complexioned foreign exchange student (from the foreign shores of Greeley, Colorado-trust me, that town’s a world away even though it’s a mere 49 miles northeast of Denver)? Me neither but my world was about to change.

For many months, I’ve been contemplating the addition of a baby brother or sister for Sam. I’ve  looked at a number of dogs that might be suitable for us with no luck. For one reason or another, none of those other pups seemed to fit. But that didn’t stop me from still trying to find a sibling for the doofus. I knew I didn’t want a new puppy so limited the search to Standard Poodle rescue groups across the country, looking at hundreds of dogs.

I had a small connection with the lady who runs the Poodle Rescue of the Rockies who happens to also be a breeder, shows them and is a big lover of standard poodles. She was friends with the former CFO at my work whose wife bred show quality champion Standards. And it was quite by happenstance that I actually met Jeanne at a local dog show a few years ago and have stayed in touch with her over the years. Purebred Standards aren’t exactly plentiful in the rescue area-there are far more hybrid dogs. Jeanne might get a few in a year but every time I contacted her, the answer was still the same, “Nope, nothing right now, but I’ll keep you in mind if something comes up.” Then over a month ago, I called and heard this, “We’re getting in 6 standards from a puppy mill from up north but it’ll be a while before they’re ready. Keep in touch and we’ll see what we can do.” So I kept in touch. In fact, I called every week, “Are they ready now?” was my new mantra. Finally the week came where I could meet two females from the group. Color me overjoyed.

When the dogs came in, Jeanne named the females Hope, Faith, Charity, and Love. We came to the conclusion a female would be a better choice with Sam so we proceeded on that basis. I met Love who everyone called Lovey first. She was a gorgeous girl, as tall as Sam though very skinny with a regal face and half tail. Faith was a bit smaller and all of the dogs came from the same breeding hell-hole (aka puppy mill farm in Greeley) where the 92-year-old owner passed away. The dogs were filthy, matted, and completely unsocialized. Picture the worse, times two. Faith was more aloof but making progress much in the same way as Lovey. I felt Lovey would be a better companion with Sam and the two met. After the initial “sniff, sniff…yup…it’s a dog” reaction, I watched this girl to see if she and I would connect. Something inside me said…”this is the one.” Every few days, I reached out to Jeanne to express my continued interest and see where they were in the process of rehoming. A couple of people had contacted her before me and I was afraid I might end up being a bridesmaid yet again.

Lovey was temporarily placed with a foster while Faith stayed with Jeanne. After a freak accident involving electrical arching from a transformer at the foster’s home, Jeanne took Lovey back so as to minimize the stress. However the 19 (yes, count ’em) 19 firefighters and all the activity associated with determining the house was safe to inhabit, overwhelmed poor Lovey causing her to stress out to the point that she needed to be hospitalized and given medication to stop the dehydrating diarrhea. Then the medication caused her to suffer a reaction and resulted in an evening of seizures. Once the vet diagnosed it was a reaction and not some other medical issue (i.e. epilepsy, etc.), the meds were stopped and the seizures disappeared as quickly as they began. Poor Lovey though lost a bit of weight and needed to be nursed back to health. Last week Jeanne called and said she’d like to see how Sam and Lovey interact together since she thought a ‘big brother’ would be critical to her socialization. The impression I was left with was this was strictly a meet and greet session. We arrived mid-afternoon and were greeted by a number of standard poodles (Jeanne had 6 she was either placing, boarding or part of her own pack). It was doggie Disneyland and Sam was overjoyed at the prospects of ‘playtime with poodles.’ Lovey was used to that commotion and romped with all the big dogs. In true Sam fashion, he was just keen at the chase part.

The meeting went great, and while the dogs interacted, we talked about Lovey’s past and future. After a couple of hours, Jeanne asked, “well, are you ready to take her home tonight?” Wait…what? I thought this was just a meet and greet?! Long story short, we filled out the paperwork, gathered up her pup paraphernalia and loaded up the car.

She was a great traveler (unlike a certain Standard who loves the idea of riding in the car, but just can’t stand the actual moving part. She sat in the back seat checking out EVERYTHING. Nothing seems to escape this girl, she’s curious and needs to check out whatever is in her view. She’s quiet and remarkably calm. My hat’s off to the foster mom and her son for working with her. We had a couple of conversations about her progress and I continue to be awed at what a great job they did while she stayed with them.

ElsaApart from trying to figure out how to accommodate this newbie who was thought to be possibly 4 years old, we needed to figure out an appropriate name. Lovely wasn’t gonna cut it. With her regal stature, I felt like she needed something noble. Girl names seem to be in short supply from what I could determine to fit the bill. Sure there are 87 million cool boy names, but girl names…that was another story. I knew it couldn’t be some fluff name but what? Finally I landed on “Elsa von Furstenberg,” Elsa for short. Hey, don’t laugh…poodles originated in Germany so I figured, a German name would be just the ticket. I nixed Brunhilda though right off the bat. So apparently…it seems there was a “little” Disney movie where the heroine was named Elsa recently (had I known, I might have gone deeper on the list-yeah there are actual lists of German names for dogs (and cats, too). Think the top 100 baby names. Oi. Anyway, I came up with a regal name (which means noble and it describes this girl to a tee) from the top third of the list after we couldn’t seem to agree on anything (one name was “Misha” to which I said…blech).

elsaThese past few days have been a whirlwind for Sam and I. We’re trying to figure out what makes this girl tick. Is she housebroken or not (we’re still asking that question and hoping for a positive answer soon)? Trying to access the personality of a puppy mill dog isn’t easy and you must have the patience of Job. They are easily spooked, have no experience with everyday stuff that seems obvious and yet they are somewhat of a blank slate for the future given the right training. One thing that was a lovely discovery is she walks well on leash, though she continues to not realize ‘you can’t never cross the streams” (as in cross the leashes with Sam and behind mom’s back) but we’re working on it. I took her and Sam through our neighborhood Farmer’s Market on Sunday and she was a rock star. Elsa is very bright and has a high desire to please (unlike a certain furry brother). She’s figured out that she rather enjoys all the attention she’s garnering through her good looks and was curious and patient while people fawned all over her. I was blown away. I don’t even like that much going on and she was showing me the ropes!

So bottom line last Friday, I rescued a ‘little girl foreign exchange student’ who I will make sure is fully legal and hope you’ll enjoy hearing stories about her and who knows, maybe if she shows some aptitude, I’ll turn the laptop over to her for her perspective. Right now, Sam is thinking, “gee, everything was great at Doggie Disneyland, but did we have to bring her home?” That and “so how long is this semester and when does she go back to that foreign land?”

When you see pics like this, you know everything’s gonna be just fine.

Wordy Wednesday

Wait…what the dog?! This pup looks like either a furry slinky toy or something assembled via the helpful chubby IKEA instruction guy. Sam may be flexible, but this is just nuts.

Thought for the day. Don’t get yourself all in a bunch because it’s only Wednesday; instead, think of it as more like the weekend isn’t that far off.

Summertime and the living is…noisy

dog-meeting

Ever have that one dog in the neighborhood that barks non-stop? Day and night? We’ve got one and I can’t quite pin-point its exact location but I’m so jones-ing for a ‘come to Jesus’ chat with its owner. This poor dog barks when I take out the recycling. He raises Cain if I’m working in the garden. He barks at 5:30 in the morning before the day’s cacophony begins and he barks at 12:30 at night. I’m guessing he lives outside, but with all the wooden fenced yards around, I can’t quite determine which house he lives in with exact precision.

My first reaction is to go up to the front door and (1) calmly and patiently talk with the owner about what can be done about the barking dog (I’m guessing the owner is so tuned out that they don’t realize it’s an issue to anyone) or (2) simultaneously want to take a bat with me and bash whomever answers the door and scream “would you please shut that &#@% dog up or find it a more responsible owner who will pay attention to it!” Sheesh people.

It isn’t the dog’s fault. I get that, yet still desire a bit of peace and quiet when I leave the house rather than that endless barking till I’m out of range. Yes, I realize that the weather has been hot and miserable lately. Shoot, I’d bark as well if it’d get me back in a cool house. But for the love of all that’s holy, why can’t you bring that poor creature in rather than let it suffer outdoors and disrupt the entire neighborhood? Why does he have to stay outside 365 days a year? Yup, that poor dog barks in the winter, he barks in the summer, he barks early in the morning and in the dead of night. I feel as badly for him as I do for those of us who must endure it.

Did you ever have a dog that barked incessantly and non-stop in your ‘hood? What did you do? Bonus points if you didn’t get arrested AND still managed to resolve the problem without the dog being punished.

Tuesday Troubles

Not actually Frank but close
Not actually Frank but close

We’ve pretty much slipped back into our usual routine for the most part which includes a couple walks during the day, one in the morning and one at night. Ever notice how “some” dogs just seem to court trouble? We’re buzzing long nicely and pass a neighbor’s house who owns one of the biggest and tallest Great Danes I’ve ever seen. ‘Frank’ is one biggg sucker and he announces his presence with authority. He’s a gorgeous charcoal color and looks like a huge grey ghost. He does however seem to despise Sam.

Not that he’s had any encounters with Sam. Heavens no. He’s so big he scares the stuffing outa me, but Sam could give two whits about Frank. Yesterday we decided to walk in the opposite direction of Frank’s house and came across a pair of Danes getting ready to go on their walk. They live a couple blocks down the street from us and I hadn’t seen them before now. As if they’d just received a text from Frank, they both started carrying on like banshees (with that low, deep Barry White voice…but not the one with all the sexy lyrics). The owner was having a hard time trying to get them corralled calm (thankfully he didn’t get dragged down the porch like I initially thought might happen. We scurried by as quickly as I could drag His Highness who was more than dallying along so as to be able to check his Twitter feed. We eventually passed and apparently Sam thinks I’m going to protect him from these ginormous, snarling hounds. Uh, dude, you’re on your own. I’m dropping your leash and running like an Olympic sprinter in the opposite direction, truth be told. There are a few other Danes in the neighborhood and they all react pretty much the same way and I have no idea why.

But these latest encounters got me thinking, why do some dogs just go crazy over other dogs, especially ones that are just toddling along, minding their own business, not aggressive in any fashion? Seems like the reaction is waaay beyond what might be warranted but I’ve been known to be way off base before.

I mean, seriously…is this the kind of dog that should entice an all out barking, snarling, “I’m-gonna-tear-you-a-new-one” reaction? Yeah, me neither. Maybe Sam’s ‘amorous reputation’ has been tweeted around the ‘hood and all the Great Dane male dogs are trying to make sure he doesn’t get any kinky ideas with them. That or Great Danes as a breed just generally despise my dog.

Have you ever had this happen to you?

Not-So Fab Friday

Everything was going just swell. The injury above Sam ‘s eye suffered at the hands of brutes when he was no doubt sharing his special ‘brand of love‘ at the kennel, was healing reasonably. His appetite has been improving daily, we were [mostly] over the jet lag from the return trip that lasted 87 hours and settling back nicely into our pre-vacay groove when THIS happened. O.u.c.h.

final

How in the heck did that happen?! Well…Sam had just crawled up in my lap while I was focused on reading the latest in Blogville when his paw got hung up on my pocket and poof!!  a dewclaw broke off. Wait, he has dew claws? Yeah, I don’t why he has them either; he had them when I got him at age 2 and up until now, they’ve never given him us any problems. All my other Standards had theirs removed so this was new territory for moi. He never whimpered or cried out and it mostly just broke off rather than ripped out from the paw. For a brief moment I expect blood to spurt everywhere like an episode of The Walking Dead. Gah!! Thank goodness it was nothing like that, but still…sheesh. I mean what kind of way is that to start out the weekend?! Sorry if its hard to see it through all the muppet hair. He was squirming like a 3-year old trying to avoid getting the milk wiped off his face.

final

Hope this isn’t a harbinger of things to come as he races forward to full-fledged senior-dom. I mean, are the wheels are coming off this model, one claw at a time? Is there such a thing as Medicare for dogs?

Has your pup ever broken off a dew claw? What did you do?

Hot Water Tuesday

We returned from a fabulous Hawaiian holiday and bailed out his sorry butt picked Sam up a few days ago and all 3 of us are trying to get our Mile High legs back. The weather has been mild, the garden coming to life and we’re slowly easing back into old routines. Including some of the bad ones apparently.

It seems that our boy Sam is the least discriminating dog on the planet. He has successfully christened Wayne into the family by the same intractable behavior he assured me was ancient history.

We were enjoying a lovely meal Sunday evening and all of a sudden, there was some bizarre crunching sound. OH GOD, nooooo…I am way too familiar with that noise (first comes an eery silence, then a weird smacking/chewing sound and as your brain is trying to wrap your head around it and then finally the oh-too-familiar realization that the tearing, munching sound you’re hearing is your worst nightmare and will soon greet you once you find that idiot dog). Immediately running into the guest bedroom where Mr. I’m-So-Proud-of-Myself had managed to eviscerate the lining and corner of a small leather portfolio that belonged to Wayne’s grandfather. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!!?!?!?! He’s gone and done it again! I can’t believe that stupid knucklehead dog went in that room, sniffed out said portfolio on top of the bed and then proceeded to pull it down to chew the living corner out of it. Gah!!!!!

Does anyone else notice the lack of remorse on the miscreant’s face?

final

I can’t decide whether to be pixed at him for the misdeed and shifting his attention away from my stuff or, grateful I’m no longer the target of these antics. Either way, I’m sorry Wayne is now part of the victim’s club a member of the same group as I’ve been…that of undeserved canine attacks on sentimental leather items…also known as fair game on the uprights stuff when they leave me in dog prison. That or he likes him better. With this hound, you just never can tell.  All I can say is we both need to be diligent about this little pill of a monster…that and keep all valuables put completely away from inquiring noses. And here I thought I was finished raising kids. Apparently not.
